MESSAGE FROM ADMINISTRATION Welcome to College Heights and the home of the Huskies. This course calendar represents the many options available to you to continue your journey in education and beyond. We are proud to have served for over 40 years as the center for handson learning and the skilled trades for the city of Guelph and Wellington County. As partners within the Upper Grand District School Board, we encourage you to continue your use of My Blueprint to further assist you in planning and mapping out your future courses and career destination. There are numerous pathways available to you and each one offers its own distinct skills, knowledge and attitudes for success. College Heights is structured to help students leverage their strengths, build on their weaknesses and grow as individuals to be the best contributor to our various communities. Please make use of our terrific guidance and resource staff in selecting courses, determining levels and planning for appropriate pathways. This calendar is designed to assist in the process of planning for your future courses here at College Heights. We suggest students pick a pathway first, then plan around the pathway. If you change your mind later, relax, as transitions between pathways can be planned fairly easily. Again, our excellent guidance and resource staff can assist you in navigating around pathways, update and modify course plans and work with you around your school and work needs. In addition to Pathways planning, we also offer the largest selection of Specialist High Skills Major programs. Just recently we added a pathway in Arts and Culture with a specific focus on guitar building and maintenance. Our SHSM programs offer students additional access to certifications and experiences that will put them ahead of other high school graduates in trades programs and make for excellent workplace preparation. High school is awesome! College Heights is even more awesome! In addition to the programs and pathways we offer a wealth of extra-curricular programs and groups to enhance the high school experience. We can t wait to see you and work with you over the next few years. Come out and howl with the Huskies!!! Remember our school motto: Education that Works!! What is it? Why pursue a SHSM? SPECIALIST HIGH SKILLS MAJOR The Specialist High Skill Major (SHSM) is one of the eight new innovative programs in the Student Success Strategy. The SHSM is Ministry-approved Specialized Program that consists of a defined combination of courses and experiences that relate to a specific economic sector. The SHSM allows students to customize their high school experience to suit their interests and talents, and prepare for a successful postsecondary transition to apprenticeship training, college or employment, while meeting the requirements of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). The SHSM enables students to gain the sector-identified preparatory credits, skills and knowledge, and make informed career decisions, This makes the learning environment more engaging for students, focuses them on graduation and prepares them to pursue their career goals. General Outline for SHSM Requirements: Components for the SHSM 1. A bundle of and credits that include: 4 major credits that provide sector-specific knowledge and skills; 3 or 4 other required credits from the Ontario curriculum, in English and Mathematics, in which some expectations are met through learning activities contextualized to the sector; 2 or 3 cooperative education credits that provided authentic learning experiences in a workplace setting, enabling students to refine, extend, apply, and practice sector-specific knowledge and skills 2. Sector-recognized certifications and training courses, some are compulsory, and a choice of additional training from a list of Ministry approved certifications and training courses. The requirement is different for each sector. 3. Experiential learning activities within the sector. 4. Reach Ahead experiences in the area of the student s postsecondary destination of choice. 5. Development of Essential Skills and work habits required in the sector, and use of the Ontario Skills Passport (OSP) for purposes of documentation.
