Riding Hood Quilt Any child would love to be wrapped up in this charming storybook quilt. Start with the Baby Lock Rachel sewing machine to piece the blocks together and then use the Baby Lock Cornet quilting machine to quilt all of the layers together. These two machines are sure to provide a happy ending to your quilting experience. Skill Level: Beginner Pieced by: Diane Kron, Software and Embroidery Project Manager Quilted by Cathy Brown, Baby Lock Quilting Ambassador Baby Lock Project: Little Red Riding Hood Quilt Page 1 of 5

Supplies: Baby Lock Rachel sewing machine Baby Lock Coronet quilting machine 1 Charm pack of print fabrics (Lil Red by Moda) 1 Charm pack of solid white fabric (Bella Solids) 1 Yard of small red print for binding that coordinates with fabrics 3 Yards of white fabric for backing and for sashing Batting Madeira Cotona thread for piecing Madeira white quilting thread Frixion marking pen Rotary cutter and mat 3 x 18 Straight edge ruler Basic sewing supplies Instructions: Embroidery: 1. Set up the Rachel sewing machine for sewing with the ¼ foot attached and the machine threaded with the white Madeira Cotona thread. 2. To create the blocks, follow the next set of steps while referring to the illustrations that follow: Place one print charm pack square with the right side facing up and a white charm pack square on top of each other on a flat surface. Using a straight edge ruler and the Frixion marking pen, draw a diagonal line across the square from corner to corner as shown in the following illustration. Baby Lock Project: Little Red Riding Hood Quilt Page 2 of 5

Pin the two units together. On each side of the drawn line, sew ¼ from the line. Cut on the drawn line to create two equal sections. Press the seams towards the print fabric. Repeat these steps to make 64 sections. 3. On a flat surface place the sections together to form a block with the white areas facing the center. 4. Sew two sections together to from a rectangle. Sew the two rectangles together to form an 8 ½ square. 5. Press the seams in the same direction. Create 16 blocks. Baby Lock Project: Little Red Riding Hood Quilt Page 3 of 5

6. Arrange the blocks as desired on a flat surface. Leave a space between each of the blocks for the white sashing strips. 7. From the white fabric cut several 5 strip across the width of the fabric for the sashing. Cut the strips into 8 ½ lengths. 8. Lay the pieced squares on a flat surface. 9. Sew the white sashing strips to each side of the pieced blocks to form a row. Trim as needed. 10. From the white fabric, cut five pieces that are 5 wide for the inside sashing. If the fabric is not long enough to reach across the width, you may need to piece the sections together. 11. Sew the sashing to the pieced rows. 12. Press the seams outward. 13. Trim the edges as needed. 14. Layer the backing, batting and the quilt top on a flat surface. 15. Set up the machine for quilting. Wind several bobbins with the same quilting thread that will be used on the top of the quilt. Thread the machine with the quilting thread and place a bobbin in the machine. 16. Attach the quilt layers to the top of the Cornet frame. Attach the back first then the front and ending with the sides. Unclamp the brackets on the back rail and slide the quilt under the brackets and reclamp. Use the clips with the black handles and clamp over the rail to hold the quilt in place. Smooth out any wrinkles and attach the longer clamps over the front rail on the coronet. Using the bungee cords on the sides to tighten the quilt. 17. Quilt the layers together using your favorite stipple or quilt pattern. In this quilt channel quilting was done. 18. When you have finished quilting in the first area on the quilt, you will be ready to wind (accordion style) the finished quilt to the top rail. Release the bungee cords and the brackets on the front and back rails. Move the quilt upward to a new un-quilted area. Fold the quilt accordion style so that the folds are sitting on top of the top rail. Use the white split rings to hold the folded quilt in place. Place the black handled brackets, where needed, with the black handles facing upward holding the quilt in place. This action will provide you with the most available area for quilting. Attach the long brackets to the front rail and the bungee cords to the sides to secure the quilt. 19. Quilt this area on the quilt. 20. Repeat Steps 15-18 until the quilt is completed. 21. Remove the quilt from the frame and trim around the outer edges to square up the quilt. 22. Cut several 2½ wide strips across the width of the red print fabric for the binding. Piece the sections together to form one long continuous strip. 23. Fold the wrong sides together along the long edge and press. 24. On one of the short ends, fold in at a 45 angle to form an angled edge and press. 25. Starting 6 from the top corner, place the pressed 45 angled end with the raw edge of the binding along the outer edge of the quilt, and pin in place. 26. Using a 1/4 seam allowance, start to sew 4 from the top edge of the binding, and continue down the first side of the quilt. Stop when you are ¼ from the corner and backstitch. Cut the thread. Baby Lock Project: Little Red Riding Hood Quilt Page 4 of 5

27. Remove the quilt from the machine. Fold the binding up and then down over the second side of the quilt so that the raw edges are even. This will create a 45 corner. Pin in place and sew the second side of the quilt. Stop 1/4 from the second corner; backstitch and cut the thread. 28. Follow the same binding steps to complete the binding on the remaining sides on the quilt. After turning the last corner, trim the end on the binding so that it overlaps past the starting point on the binding. Tuck the binding end inside the beginning point of the binding and sew in place. 29. Press the binding to the back of the quilt. 30. To finish your quilt, hand-sew the binding to the back of the quilt. For other exciting projects like this one, visit Babylock at www.babylock.com. 2017 Baby Lock USA.
