A little Virginia History Let s start this issue with some Virginia history as we head toward the Thanksgiving season. Ever wonder about the first Virginia coinage? It has an interesting story. Although the April 10, 1609 charter for the Virginia Plantation included the authority to mint coins, the colony did not exercise this privilege until May 20, 1773, when the Virginia Assembly authorized the a halfpenny to be produced at the Tower mint in London. On February 14, 1774, five tons of the coin, or nearly 700,000 pieces, made their way to the new world aboard the aptly-named ship, Virginia. A year later, the British rulers finally permitted the coins to be distributed, and Virginia treasurer Robert Nicholas, published a notice explaining that "copper money is now ready to be issued in exchange either for Gold, Silver or any Treasury Notes." But we all know what happened soon thereafter, when in 1775, the shot heard around the world was fired in Lexington. Once the Revolutionary War broke out, the new halfpenny and all copper coins were hoarded. When the war ended, there is evidence that these coins bearing the profile of George III continued to be used. Eighty percent of the coins found during the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg, were Virginia halfpence! From the 13 th century until the 19th, the Royal Mint was located in the Tower of London. A bust of King George III appears on the face of the 1773 halfpenny, while the reverse is imprinted with the shield of the colony of Virginia. ACC Page 2 12/16/2015

A Look Back in Time Thirty years ago, our club was 22 years old During the October, 1981 Alexandria Coin Club meeting, an 1832 half dollar at VF 30 was offered for $75.00. Today, the estimated value of that coin is approximately $140. An 1864 Large Motto VF-30 two-cent piece had an asking price of $17.50. Today, the value has stepped up to nearly $50. What else was going on? MS-DOS is released! Ali retires. Reagan presides. Sandra Day O'Connor sits. Post-It Notes are launched. A gallon of gas costs $1.25. Average income is a little more than $21,000. Forty years ago, we had just turned 12 During the October, 1971 ACC meeting, an 1834 AU half-dime was sold for $22.00. The estimated value at that time was $35.00. In 2011, that coin is valued at $250. An 1849 dime (Good) went for 75 cents more that its estimated value of $2.50. Today, that good dime is valued at $20.00. Here is an interesting lot an 1849 extra-fine half-cent with an 80-degree rotated reverse sold for 15.00 at the 1971 meeting. Without taking the error into account, that coin today is worth $150. Other news from 40 years back: The club met at the Adult Recreation Center, 3210 King Street in Alexandria. The club had just held its Fall Coin Show on October 16-17, and six new club members were recognized. You don t remember 1971 too clearly? Let s refresh your memory: The 1971 year end close Dow Jones Industrial Average was 890. The average cost of a new house was $25,250.00. The cost of a gallon of gas? A mere 40 cents. Need help? Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Alexandria Coin Show Saturday, February 11, 2012 9:00 am 5:00 pm Hampton Inn & Suites, Alexandria, VA Free Admission & Parking DOOR PRIZES!!! Free Seminar @ 1:00 Contact Boots Barnes 703-975-7029 (cell) steven.barnes8@verizon.net New Pricing on America the Beautiful Collectible Good news: The Mint has lowered the price on the 2011-P Gettysburg National Military Park 5-ounce coin, previously going for $279.95. On October 7, the issue price was adjusted to $229.95, a $50 savings over the former price. Not so good news: the lower price reflects a decline in value of silver bullion from approximately $40 a troy ounce, to about $30. Remaining 2010-P Mount Hood National Forest 5-ounce coins are also at a lower price. As of recent reports, approximately3 to 4,000 coins out of the original 27,000 mintage are still available from the Mint. The 2011 Gettysburg National Military Park 5 oz Silver Uncirculated Coin is the first of five 2011-dated five ounce silver collectible coins issued by the US Mint. ACC Page 5 12/16/2015
