All classes require that attendees bring the items listed on the 'Sewing Class Supply List' to each class. Some classes have a second supply list requiring additional items. These lists are available at each store. All machines must be in good working order. It may be necessary to have it serviced prior to class time. Machine manuals are mandatory. If this has been misplaced, a replacement for the specific model can be printed from the manufacturer's web site. Bring a light lunch or snack as all classes go beyond the noon hour. Fabric Embellishment Hoop Embroidery Do you have one of those amazing machines that creates beautiful embroidery in a hoop that has barely, if ever, been used? Do you want to increase your knowledge of embroidery essentials? These classes are for you! Content to be covered will include an investigation of machine parts and accessories required to complete an embroidery in the hoop, appropriate threads, stabilizers, designs, templates, editing and file management. Enough to set you on your way. Important: It is strongly recommended that each participant spend time with the sales person that sold the machine to them in order to learn the icons and their function on the LCD screen prior to coming to class. These classes are about learning how to embroider in the hoop. That requires knowledge about how to operate the machine. Prerequisite: ability to operate an embroidery machine and general sewing experience. Supply list: basic supplies/equipment as listed in the 'Sewing Class Supply List'. - embroidery machine with its manual and all of its accessories plus small & medium sized hoops. - bobbin thread (a fine 60 weight or higher); pre-wound bobbins are recommended (Invisafil Deco Bob 80 weight). - top thread in several colours of machine embroidery thread (eg red/pink, blue, green, yellow). Sulky 40 weight thread is nice to use for these classes. - one Sulky Stabilizer Sample package. - 0.5 metre of medium weight tear away stabilizer. - several new machine embroidery needles as required for your embroidery machine. - fabric: a fat quarter of plain light coloured, design free cotton. - small curved scissors and tweezers. Hoop Embroidery Project These classes take you beyond hoop embroidery basics. Here you will learn how to do types of appliqué, trapunto, and dimensional embroidery techniques plus the use of puffy foam and mylar while incorporating principles and elements of design to design and make a table runner or wall hanging. Prerequisite: - ability to complete simple hooped machine embroideries. - completion of Hoop Embroidery Class. Supply lists: - basic supplies/equipment as listed in the 'Sewing Class Supply List'. - refer to the Hoop Embroidery Project Supply List for all other items required. Dates & Times: November 2, 9, 16 & 23, 2016 Wednesdays, South Store 10:00 am - 2:00 pm Cost: $145.00 November 8, 15, 22 & 29, 2016 Tuesdays, North Store 10:00 am - 2:00 pm Hoop Embroidered Lace Making lace in the embroidery hoop requires different techniques from that of stitching colourful designs onto fabric. Embroider samples of free standing lace, Battenberg lace and cutwork. Make a Christmas ornament. Prerequisite: - ability to complete simple hooped machine embroideries. - completion of Hoop Embroidery Class recommended. Supply lists: - basic supplies/equipment as listed in the 'Sewing Class Supply List'. - refer to the 'Hoop Embroidered Lace Supply List' Dates & Times: October 15, 2016 Saturday, North Store 10:00 am - 2:00 pm Cost: $40.00 November 1, 2016 Tuesday, North Store 10:00 am - 2:00 pm November 26, 2016 Saturday, South Store 10:00 am - 2:00 pm In The Hoop Embroidery (Applique) 'In the hoop embroidery' means that a project can be completed totally in a hoop on the embroidery machine. Come and make a door hanger for Halloween, Thanksgiving and/or Christmas. Prerequisite: - ability to complete simple hooped machine embroideries. - completion of Hoop Embroidery Project Class recommended. Supply lists: - basic supplies/equipment as listed in the 'Sewing Class Supply List'. - additional supplies are in the 'In The Hoop Embroidery (Applique) Supply List' Dates & Times: September 29, 2016 Thursday, North Store 10:00 am - 2:00 pm Cost: $40.00 November 19, 2016 Saturday, South Store 10:00 am - 2:00 pm Stitch Handbook Does your sewing machine have lots of decorative stitches that you don't use? Why not go beyond the utility stitches? Make a book of pages filled with those beautiful stitches that you can use as a handy reference. Use various decorative needles to create interesting effects. Prerequisite: ability to operate your machine and some general sewing experience. Supply list: - basic supplies/equipment as listed in the 'Sewing Class Supply List' -cotton fabric cut into 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm) pieces; must be design free in plain pale colours,. - medium weight fusible non-woven interfacing (eg pellon). Minimum 1 metre. - upper threads: decorative 35, 40 or 50 weight in various colours for top thread. - bobbin thread: light weight neutral colour; 60 80 weight. - needles: size 80/12 universal; twin (2.0 2.5 mm); triple needle; double eye needle; wing needle. Top stitch and/or embroidery needles also can be used instead of a universal needle. - fringe foot NB Before class time, cut 10 pieces of fabric & interfacing and fuse them together. Christmas Applique During this class a Christmas table runner or wall hanging will be made with the sewing machine using decorative stitches and free motion stitching to produce a wreath, decorated tree and gifts and burning candle with holly leaves and berries. Come and use your creativity to make a unique project. Prerequisite: - basic sewing skills. - completion of the stitch handbook class is recommended. - basic quilting experience is beneficial. Supply List: - basic supplies & equipment as listed on the 'Sewing Class Supply List' - refer to the 'Applique Table Runner Supply List' for additional supplies. Dates & Times: November 10, 17, 24 & December 1, 2016 Cost: $145.00 Thursdays, North Store 10:00 am - 2:00 pm SEWING Basic Sewing Are you new to sewing and want to learn basic techniques? Do you need to refresh basic sewing skills? These classes will help you know your machine components and required maintenance. Practice seam finishes, various types of stitching, gathering techniques, darts, trimming & clipping of seam allowances, pressing requirements and more. Prerequisite: a desire to learn or upgrade basic sewing techniques. Supply list: - basic supplies/equipment as listed in the 'Sewing Class Supply List'. - 0.8 metre of medium weight muslin (found at Sewing Sensation South Store or in the drapery department at Fabricland). - supplies must be purchased before class start time. Dates & Times: September 8 & 15, 2016 Thursdays, North Store 10:00 am - 2:30 pm Cost: $85:00 October 19 & 26, 2016 Wednesdays, South Store 10:00 am - 2:30 pm Zippers Having trouble with zipper installation? Need some refreshing? Never put one in a garment and want to learn how? This class will help you. The following methods will be covered: - centred, lapped, mock fly front and invisible all by machine. - hand inserted (couture method) to be demonstrated. Prerequisite: previous sewing experience with Basic Sewing Class as a minimum. Supply List: - basic supplies/equipment as listed in the 'Sewing Class Supply List'. - 3 regular zippers - minimum length of 7 inches (18 mm) - one (1) invisible zipper. - regular zipper foot that comes with sewing machine. - special invisible zipper foot. This will need to be purchased as it does not come with your machine. - fabric pieces suitable for zippers (medium weight woven material such as cotton, wool, muslin). SERGING Basic Serger Is your serger sitting on a shelf waiting to be used? Do you use the same stitch over and over? Are you frustrated every time you try to use your serger? This class is for you! Get to know your machine inside and out. Become proficient at making the basic stitches. Content covered will include a review of the machine, its accessories and maintenance. Create balanced stitches; serge curves and corners; use the differential feed and more. Prerequisite: - a need to successfully manage your serger. - general sewing experience. - the serger needs to be in good working order; servicing prior to class is recommended. - 'hand me downs' and older sergers must be serviced before coming to class. Supply list: - serger and its manual plus all of its accessories and needles appropriate for your machine. - 4 different colored cones of serger thread (match colors to tension dials where possible) - small scissors, 6" (15 mm) ruler, tapestry needle, tweezers. - 0.3 metres of medium weight muslin cut into 3"x6" (7cm x15cm) pieces. Muslin is available at Sewing Sensation south store and Fabricland in the drapery department. - various types & weights of fabric scraps cut into pieces as above Please cut fabric prior to class time. - note paper, pen or pencil, black marker. - optional: note book and small stapler for mounting stitch samples. QUILTING Beginner Quilting These classes are designed for individuals with little or no quilting experience. An easy quilt will be made using one main focus fabric and five coordinating fabrics. Learn how to place fabrics for a pleasing effect; use cutting tools and mats; stitch accurate ¼ inch seam allowances; make 12 ½ inch blocks; include borders; free motion quilting and binding. All of this and more will result in an attractive quilt. Prerequisite: ability to operate a sewing machine and some general sewing experience. Supply list: - basic supplies/equipment as listed in the 'Sewing Class Supply List'. - all items on the 'Beginner Quilting Class Supply List'. Dates & Times: October 6, 13, 20 & 27, 2016 Thursdays, North Store 10:00 am - 2:00 pm Cost: $145.00 October 7, 14, 21, & 28, 2016 Fridays, South Store 10:00 am - 2:00 pm Quilting with a Walking Foot Today's quilting consists of many stitching lines not just stitching in the ditch. One way to create quilting designs on a quilt is with the walking foot. This class consists of creating various interesting line designs along with incorporating decorative stitches on sample quilt sandwiches. Just enough to set you on your way. Prerequisite: - basic quilting experience. - Stitch Handbook Class recommended. YELLOW BRICK ROAD (Beginners) This is a great project for beginner quilter using your favorite fat ¼ s and yardage for borders. You will learn how to use a rotary cutter and rulers as well as various quilt piecing techniques. After the top is completed students will baste their quilts and using a walking foot will quilt layers together. To finish quilt you will learn how to make binding and stitch it to your quilt. Sept. 8, 15 & 22 10:00 AM -2:00 PM FRENCH BRAID TABLE RUNNER (All levels) This is a pretty quilted table runner that looks complicated but is hot difficult to do. This class will teach you the technique of quilt as you go which shortens the sewing time. If you have an embroidery machine you will be shown how to incorporate machine embroidery. This is a nice project to make as gifts or for all seasons. Dates & Times: South Store Tues. Sept. 27 & Thurs. This class will teach you how to make bias binding or you will have the option of using ready-made. It is also an introduction to using foam instead of batting which gives the bag body and durability. Fun, you will never just make one! Dates & Times: South Store Thurs. Oct. 6 & 13 10:00 AM -1:00 PM Cost: $55 CAMDEN BAG or BALI BRIEFCASE These two bags are uniquely made with 2 ½ inch strips and batting or you can make your own. You need to so some hand stitching with both designs. Additional fabric is needed for pockets and handles. Batiks are great for these bags, plus a great place for those special buttons. Dates & Times: South Store Tues. Oct. 4 & 11 10:00 AM -1:30 PM Cost: $65 SOCIAL SEWING CLUB (All levels) do you want to sew your own projects and see what other people are working on. Have fun making anything you want from pillowcases with French seam or piecing your current quilt. It is also a good opportunity to work on other class homework or your Christmas gifts. SLIDE SHOW QUILT (Previous quilting experience needed). Slide show is a great quilt to make out of fat ¼ s with a theme. This quilt will teach you all about ¼ inch seam allowance and its importance. You will soon develop a love for assembly sewing and great pressing habits. Dates & Times: South Store Tues, Nov. 17, 24 & Dec. 1 10:00 AM -2:00 PM Cost: $85 KIDS SEWING PJ PANTS & PILLOW CASE (Min. 8 Years Old) Kids will make a pattern and cut and sew a p air of pj pants and depending on skill level and age they should have time to make a French seamed pillowcase as well. This will be the perquisite to the quilt class in the New Year. Dates & Times: South Store Sat, Dec. 3 10:00 AM -2:00 PM Cost: $40 CLASS POLICIES Sewing is fun when you get the results you want. Our classes are small and feature personalized instruction. You will be encouraged to do your best while enjoying successful experiences. Because each student cuts and sews at a different rate, and most projects take more than class time, please expect some work will need to be done at home between classes. Before signing up for classes, please check your schedule and read our class policies carefully. To be fair to our teachers and other students we must remain firm in our registration and cancellation policies. Full Payment of class fees due at time of registration. This guarantees a place in the class. Phone registration is available with Visa or MasterCard. Cancellations must be made at least 7 days prior to class start. A store credit will be issued provided your cancellation does not reduce class participation below minimum number required. Minimum number of students is three, maximums vary by class. When applicable the teacher will be glad to leave class notes. Sewing World reserves the right to cancel 48 hours prior to any class if participation level is below minimum. Sewing World will issue a full refund for any class we cancel. Please pick up a supply list at time of registration. Purchase supplies prior to arriving for class and once you have confirmed that the class has met minimum student participation. Those registered for a class receive a 10% discount on class supplies. Please mark all tools and supplies. Sewing World is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Please refrain from wearing perfumes in consideration of fellow classmates with allergies. Children are not allowed in classes with the exception of our Summer sewing camps.
