Help us keep our cutting edge in technology. Make your mark in technology Designing innovative solutions for health: This is Roche s declared corporate objective. Our engineers, specialised in mechanical engineering, automation technology, electrical engineering, process technology, maintenance and facility management, ensure our products are developed and produced speedily and cost-effectively, right alonge the line from the idea to the finished, marketable product. Using the latest and most economical technologies is a matter of course for us. Whether a new production building or machine product line is being planned, developed, constructed or maintained, or whether questions concerning safety and environmental protection need to be managed - the experience and competencies of our engineers are the basis of success. Our global projects some of which involve more than one location require planning expertise and creativity in interdisciplinary teams to increase business success. I got to know Roche within the fostering young talent program Roche Evolution. Thanks to various stays abroad during my studies, I was able to get insights into working methods, cultures and the management of large-scale projects. As a member of Roche Evolution I had the chance to take part in a seminar on the project management issue. After my studies, I joined Roche and now work as a project manager for building automation. In this function, I m co-responsible for the success of our investment projects at the site. My tasks involve customer contact for the clarification of the buildings requirements, as well as the equipment and machines it contains. Further, I am responsible for monitoring the planning work and approving the final implementation work. I easily made contacts in our department. The environment and atmosphere, also the motivated and committed colleagues, literally pull you along. This repeatedly confirms my decision to move to Mannheim. Tobias Teriet, Electrical engineering/automation technology Technology Construction 3D Printing Building Planning Review of electromagnetic compatibility of blood glucose meters I started to work at Roche as an automation specialist and project manager for automation projects. I became group leader in just a short time. It s exciting to support a project, starting from the drawing board through to the finished machine. At Roche, we also have the very latest and most state-of-the-art technology, which continually gives us exciting challenges. For example, we produce machines specifically for company operations, so-called special machines which cannot be purchased on the general market. We also partially produce for Roche sites abroad. This leads to intensive exchange with other locations. Especially the friendly and collegial relationship among employees makes me feel as if I had won a row of six in the lottery as an engineer with Roche. Michael Trapp, Automation technology 4 5

Production Plant I got to know Roche as an external employee. During this time, my desire to work for Roche grew because I gained insights into the wide variety of engineering jobs within the company. Today, I m a production engineer in the Process and Facility Engineering division, and am in charge of planning and coordinating maintenance work, repairs, modifications and the development of optimization concepts for plants already in place. I find my field of work to be multifaceted, interesting and technologically complex. In the process, I m continually motivated by the thought that I m playing a role in the production of active ingredients for medications that are vital for life, for example, in the field of breast cancer. You have the opportunity to learn new things every day, to acquire various experiences and to solve problems. Martin Kirschner, Environment and bio engineer/energy technology Production of test strips Technology I joined Roche as a qualification engineer and have qualified plant machinery and systems as well as approved them for validation. Today, I m a plant engineer in the Point-of-Care department. The spectrum of jobs is highly diverse, starting from responsibility for the maintenance budget up to plant and process optimization and ultimately, the processing of projects from clarification of the order straight to conclusion. We re currently working on a new project that should replace two older systems for the cutting and filling of test strips. I m especially excited about transferring the experiences gathered from existing processes in the form of innovations to the new system with the goal of ensuring sustainably better process capability. Thanks to the wide-ranging variety of machine parks at the site in Mannheim, new challenges can also repeatedly be generated in the form of improvement projects, and methods from lean management can be learned and applied. No process is the same, and you always become familiar with new methods. I greatly appreciate the confidence my superiors and colleagues give me, which encourages you to broaden your horizons, implement new projects and act with passion. Alexander Jakob, Process engineering High-tech Lab 6 7

Freedom creates innovations. Make your mark in research Due to the company s size, proximity to my home and significant participation in improving the quality of life, it was clear to me at a relatively early stage that I wanted to go to Roche after my studies. The most exciting thing about my job is especially that we always start from scratch to develop devices and tests. In the process, we often have a lot of freedom to make our decisions and take action. First and foremost, I appreciate the exceptionally great working environment, which gives you the feeling of being valued and encourages you to bring in new ideas. Amelie Riederer, Bioprocess technology/pharmaceutical bioprocess technology Scientific breakthroughs are most likely to succeed when researchers are free to take various paths and consider problems with different perspectives. Our researchers have this freedom. As the world s biggest biotechnology company in Germany s most research-intensive industry, the spectrum of our possibilities is far from being fully tapped. On the contrary: state-of-the-art technologies, new discoveries, therapeutic approaches and strategies make our work today more exciting than ever before. From the disciplines of biotechnology, chemical technology, electrical engineering and process engineering, you support us in enabling people to lead better, longer lives thanks to scientific progress. Globally and across industries, we are one of the companies with the highest expenditures for research and development. That s because we believe that finding innovative solutions for severe diseases, for which satisfactory treatment opportunities are currently still not available, is the job of a healthcare company. Thanks to a cooperation between Roche and my university, I had the opportunity to get insights into the Research and Development division during my studies. After a trip around the world for nine months, I was absolutely sure that Roche should become my employer. My main focus was on the field of molecular biology and protein chemistry and that s exactly where I work today. We cover a broad spectrum of methods, pursue new ideas and take a look at whether these should be included in our range of products in the future. I think this is particularly interesting. But what I appreciate the most is the wellbalanced equilibrium between work and free time. It s important for me to act flexibly because the region surrounding our plant in Penzberg offers numerous leisure time activities. For example, mountain climbing is my balance to work. Discussion molecular models in the projection room Research Bernhard Röttig, Molecular biotechnology Liquid handling robotics I wrote my Master s thesis in the Penzberg Pharma Biotech Center. Interesting in the process was the development of a new system, which could still not be bought on the market. I was impressed by the number of resources which were used to tackle the project and the tremendous success it ultimately achieved. It s a fantastic feeling to know that an own group has now been created from this project. After a few years of job experience, I m happy to be back in Penzberg again. In the Cell Culture Research department, I m really excited about the new tasks that you re confronted with ike, for example, the management and realization of more projects with higher complexity. For this purpose, innovative systems were and will be acquired, among others in the form of robots, which carry out process performance. These new formats of process performance are usually not able to be fulfilled by established analysis methods in terms of the volume and number of samples, so that here as well, laboratory automation must provide new solutions. As part of an interdisciplinary team, I m coresponsible for these automation processes. In our department, I really appreciate it that we try to identify possible bottlenecks at an early stage and to counteract these. Our motivating force is to become more efficient by implementing new technologies and methods, and to not get stuck in routine work processes. Pawel Linke, Medical biotechnology 8 9

Make your mark in development Real innovations for health that is our aspiration. Biology and chemistry, information technology and electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and process engineering are all increasingly interacting with each other. This calls for agile developments and sophisticated innovations in production, marketing, digitalization and automation technology, molecular diagnostics as well as in genetics. The rapidly changing automation landscape due to new technologies is one of the biggest challenges and at the same time, an extremely exciting one. The degree of machine automation is increasing and networking of the used systems is subject to an ever more rapid transformation. We implement the very latest scientific findings by using virtual product development, cognitive intelligence and digital transformation in forward -looking, advanced products for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illnesses. The change towards Industry 4.0 and Big Data is a top priority for us because digitally networked systems enable individualized production at a global level, too. Our international project field spans Europe, the USA and Asia. For the development of tomorrow s diagnosis systems, therapies and production concepts, you manage our projects right from the start, conduct test phases in everyday life and support us in setting out on new paths with creativity and innovative spirit. From the idea to the innovation Use of virtual reality technology in the lab planning environment I joined Roche because I was interested in the field of project management and wanted to gain insights into how projects are managed across and beyond countries in a multinational group. It is extremely exciting for me to see how the individual projects are managed administratively. A new experience for me was the way of working in an interdisciplinary team, which I appreciate a lot. The project manager s challenge is to bring together teams with different backgrounds, like software, production or research & development. The motto here is: think out of the box because other ways of thinking and ideas emerge with different qualifications and experiences. David Brausse, Food technology/process engineering As technical product manager in the Systems Engineering division with Diabetes Care, I m currently working on an insulin delivery system as part of a large team. I m excited about having innovative ideas brought in and working in an international team. I particularly find the multidiscipline topic exciting in the various areas such as data communication, cyber-security, user interface and a whole lot more. We have development sites in the USA, Europe and Asia so diversity plays a key role. For example, I also have the opportunity to go to the US and Asia on a regular basis during a project so that I can establish personal contact with developers and to solve potential problems right on site. The broad range of my field of work and the trust given to me make it possible to have a lot of leeway for designing. We continuously work at the limits of physical feasibility and I can say from the bottom of my heart: I have fun working! As a software developer, I m actively involved in the early phases of product development. I have the chance to play a role in paving the way for the products future direction. Especially the issue of Industry 4.0 is a very hot topic now. Here, we collect data across the product s entire lifecycle. As time goes by, you learn how this product acts with the customer or in the laboratories. This close proximity is very helpful in regard to further product developments. I think it s fantastic that we work hand in hand with the mechanical engineers: We create the data, make it accessible and establish the references, which in turn, enables the machines to run. The main emphasis of my work is to combine and link the data in a useful way. My wide-ranging field of tasks and regular contact to the user and customer make my work tangible and therefore incredibly varied for me. Adrian Frischauf, Information technology Development Christopnh Fischer, Electrical engineering/information technology Development of multi-gripper insulin pumps During my DHBW studies, I had the chance to get to know various departments at Roche. After my studies, I was hired as a specialist project manager for software development with Professional Diagnostics. In the meantime, I m working for Diabetes Care in the Systems Engineering division and I mainly focus on wireless communication. The great thing in our unit is that you don t just limit yourself to software, but also go beyond the thematic. For me, it s essential to work in a team because I need the exchange of mutual know-how. But I especially appreciate the willpower to take on technical challenges and to solve them together as a team. Robert Knapstein, Information technology/engineering computer science 10 11

High-tech made by Roche. Make your mark in production The manufacturing of innovative health products for the whole world places high requirements on productivity, safety and quality. For this reason, our production uses ultra-modern manufacturing processes and quality management system with no gaps. Are you specialized in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or process engineering? Then plan, design, procure and qualify the necessary production, steering and control systems. Efficiency through automation Support us, for example, in planning and building complex production plants or plan and monitor the maintenance of our highly modern production facilities as a production engineer. Prove your communication strengths during the coordination of workers and realize your own ideas for the development of advanced production processes. After completing my studies, I was absolutely sure I wanted to join a healthcare company. Helping patients and contributing to market progress was my greatest wish. I started as a project manager in Site Engineering, where I was in charge of sub-projects and supervised various systems in the production of pharmaceuticals and diagnostics. Meanwhile, I began to be interested in the regulatory processes, and switched over from the technical area to quality management. This insight was extremely instructive and broadened my horizon tremendously. A few years later, I had the chance to start as group manager in the maintenance segment. Among other things, our department is responsible for the ventilation and water systems of production. We supply the media support for the production plants, so to speak. What I appreciate the most at Roche is the diversity, whether in the various fields of work or with respect to career opportunities. Roche is open towards personal wishes to change, which you can see very well by observing my various fields of activities. Martin Flörchinger, Automation technology Production After earning my PhD and following my job with a high-performance plastics manufacturer in technical sales, I joined Roche as group manager for primary particles. Here, we re in charge of all primary packaging material and partly packaging material. Altogether, that comprises around 600 different bottles, seals, base feet made out of plastic or glass, which are filled, labeled and packed. My group manages these packaging materials from development across the whole product lifecycle. In addition to the tasks of a senior manager, I am also realigning the packaging material development department together with other project participants. At the same time, I manage projects to prepare the packaging materials for future challenges. For example, high industrialized, fully automated processing or the design of new packaging materials. At Roche, I especially appreciate the fact that solutions for challenges are worked out constructively and quickly and that I can contribute to helping people who are ill through a fast diagnosis. Björn Fink, Mechanical engineering/plastics engineering Production Biotechnology Packaging machine 12 13

Optimize our global supply chain. Make your mark in procurement No matter whether you re an organizational talent, decision-making genius or a strategy expert, a wide array of exciting challenges await you as engineer in procurement. Starting from the controlling of procurement costs, on to the purchase of raw materials, systems and services, as well as supplier management, standardization of components to volume bundling, straight through to the selection of new technologies.. With a global procurement strategy, consistent supplier development and comprehensive quality management, we secure key competitive advantages for ourselves in this strategic field. In doing so, we lay the foundation for our company s productivity and profitability. Virtual conference Following my initial experiences in a laboratory medical practice, I joined Roche as an engineer in pharmaceutical research in Penzberg. During this period, I completed further education to become a technical management expert and then switched over to direct procurement. I worked there as sourcing manager for the field of antibodies, human material and biological raw materials. My tasks were to find new suppliers for materials which already exist, or suppliers for new materials in production processes, to conduct negotiations and to safeguard through contracts. Later on, I was appointed group manager in indirect procurement for laboratory equipment, laboratory chemicals, consumables and human samples. For me, Roche stands out because it is a globally active company. Our suppliers come from many parts of the world and the department is located at various sites in Europe, which opens up a wide array of chances in the company. Ralf Schmitt, Chemical engineer Procurement After my studies, I first worked for another healthcare company as representative head of the laboratory and later, as group manager in the raw materials procurement department. After my parental leave was over, I joined Roche in indirect procurement, and have never regretted the decision to change from the lab to procurement. I m in charge of the procurement of laboratory devices for the plants in Penzberg and Mannheim. My studies in engineering are particularly helpful because I ve partly worked with the required instruments and have knowledge in chemistry. I can combine my interest in medicine and the pharmaceutical sector and in addition, I m allowed to practice the hobby of many colleagues: shopping! I think it s important that we support each other within the specialist departments. Helping each other out, no matter from which site, is a matter of course. Manuela Michel, Pharmaceutical chemistry I work in procurement for the machines and equipment department. In my previous companies, I never had anything to do with building construction works. Today, my activities include, among other things, the purchasing of machines, negotiating work and construction agreements with suppliers as well as project support from the beginning up to the end. The area of responsibility is very broad-scale, but I can still structure my work flow according to my needs. My colleagues gave me a warm and open welcome worked me into my new jobs very well. This was also due to the mentor system. Here, new employees are assigned to colleagues who give advice and support during the initial training phase. I also think it s great that most of the office doors are open, creating a very pleasant and communicative working atmosphere. Jürgen Windmüller, Industrial engineer 14 15

I organize the maintenance of the warehousing and conveyor technology and implement projects to optimize and expand existing facilities. In the process, I support the projects from the kick-off to operational start-up. I am actively involved when processes change in our logistics handling. The broad spectrum of my field of activities is particularly appealing to me. This is reflected by the technological diversity, but also by the personal exchange and cooperation between the people, ensuring that our technology works well. After my studies, I opted for Roche as employer, also because of the corporate culture impressions I gained in the fostering young talent program Roche Evolution. I appreciate the responsibility as well as the free space I have. I experience the genuine interest in employees and the open and honest way of interaction between colleagues even during hectic work situations as a corporate philosophy that is lived out in practice. Dominik Tute, Industrial engineer 16 17
