1.0 About This Manual This manual provides instructions for the F594-PLS platform beam scale. Please read carefully before assembling, checking that you are using the correct instructions for the scale model you have purchased.! Caution A certain amount of care should be exercised to assure proper assembly and operation of this scale. The unpacking and assembly should be accompanied by a trained scale technician. Untrained personnel should not attempt to make any adjustment not specified in these instructions. The scale must be operated on a firm, level surface. A built-in bubble level is provided for checking the level condition of the scale. 2.0 Installation Instructions The following sections describe the assembly and installation of the F594-PLS platform beam scale. 2.1 Unpacking Remove all of the parts from the packing box, and remove the packing material from the scale parts. Check the packing material for loose parts and hardware. Ensure all components are included and undamaged. If any parts were damaged in shipment, notify Rice Lake Weighing Systems and the shipper immediately. 2.2 Scale Assembly Use the following steps to assemble the F594-PLS platform beam scale. 1. The F594-PLS under structure is supplied assembled with the levers and platform in their proper position. Remove the platform cover to gain access to the lever system. 2. Raise the lever system within the frame and position the fulcrum pivots of both levers in the corner loops at each corner of the frame. 3. If wheels are included in the equipment, place the axles through the holes in the frame, raise the frame, and place the wheels in the axles. 4. Place washers next to the wheels and insert cotter pins in the holes near the ends of the axles. Use sufficient washers to eliminate as much wheel and axle play as possible. 5. Place the platform in position with the bearing steels resting on the load pivots of each lever. 6. Attach the checking hardware that prevents the levers from jumping out of position. 7. Screw the long threaded portion of the pillar rods into the base assembly and place the pillar over the pillar rods. 8. Place the steelyard rod inside the pillar, and hook its upper end to the side of the pillar opening. 9. Assemble and fasten the beam stand and trig stand assemblies to the beam and trig stand support. 10. Place the pillar support cap and the stand support assembly over the pillar rods with the trig stand assembly to the right as you face the scale. 11. Place washers and acorn nuts on the pillar rods, and tighten the nuts securely. 12. Place the shelf lever in position in the pillar opening with its small loop end extending to the left of the beam stand. 13. Hook the upper end of the steelyard rod into the center loop on the shelf lever and its lower end into the loop on the end of the long lever in the under structure. 14. Securely fasten the large loop assembly on the shelf lever to the cap with the clamp. 15. Remove the pivot caps from the beam stand. 16. Place the tip of the beam assembly on the shelf lever using the beam connection link. Check that the moving parts are not binding and that the beam pivot is correctly placed on its bearing. 17. Replace the pivot caps. 18. Operate the trig that locks the beam to be certain it is working correctly. About This Manual 1
3.0 Operation Ensure that the scale is placed on a firm, level surface. Unlock the trig to allow the beam to raise the lever system to the weighing position. Adjust the beam balance weight to bring the beam horizontal and centered in the opening when at rest. If it is impossible to bring the beam to a balance, loosen the bottom set screw clamping the back balance weight to the beam assembly, and move the weight, as required, to bring the beam to a balance with the balance weight in the midpoint of its travel. Re-tighten the set screw. NOTE: To minimize shock damage, lock the trig while scale is not in use or being moved. Use the following steps to being weighing with the F594-PLS platform beam scale. 1. Lock the beam with the trig. Place the load to be weighed on the platform with the minimum amount of shock and as near as possible to the center of the platform. 2. Move the main beam poise assembly to a value greater than the estimated load weight. 3. Unlock the trig to release the beam. 4. If the beam does not rise, move the main beam poise assembly to lighter weights until it does rise. 5. Slide the other poise along the fractional beam until the beam assembly balances the same as it did with no load on the scale. If a balance is not obtained before the poise moves off the graduated scale, a heavier weight value is required on the main beam. When the beam assembly balances, the weight of the load is the value indicated by the main beam poise index plus the reading on the fractional beam indicated by its poise index. 6. Close the trig to lock the beam and lower the lever system. 7. Remove the load. 8. A poise can be locked at a desired reading with the poise lock screw. 4.0 Maintenance 1. Frequently check for correct balance with the beam unlocked, no load on the platform and poise index(es) at zero. 2. Keep the beam locked until the load has been applied to the platform. 3. Do not overload the scale. 4. Do not oil any part of the scale. 5. Keep the scale clean and as dry as possible at all times. 6. Have the operation of the scale checked at regular intervals. 2 F594-PLS Platform Beam Scale Installation Manual
5.0 Adjusting and Sealing Instructions The following sections describe how to adjust and seal the F594-PLS platform beam scale. Before starting the sealing procedure place the scale on a firm, level surface making sure that the platform and levers are not binding and that the poise is at its proper zero position. 5.1 Corner Sealing The normal precautions of locking the scale before adding or removing test weights should be observed. The recommended practice is to move the poise weight to the proper position before the load is applied to the scale. 1. Move the poise weight to 200 lb and the sliding poise to 50 lb to obtain a 250 lb setting. 2. Place 250 lbs of test weights on one corner of the scale so that the center of gravity of the test load is located approximately 4" in from each of the two corner edges of the platform. 3. Bring the beam to a balance by using the sliding poise (disregard poise reading). To expedite the sealing process rather than waiting each time for the beam to come to rest in the center of the trig, watch two oscillations of the beam after releasing it gently from the bottom of the trig - it should rise and barely clear the top of the trig, and then fall and barely clean the bottom of the trig. This indicates that the beam will come to rest in the center of the trig. 4. Lock the poise securely. 5. The balance condition at this corner will now be used as a check of the other three corners. 6. Move the 250 lb of test weight to the other corners in turn, locating the load over the corner as described in step 3. Note the beam balance condition at each corner. Do not disturb the beam poise or balance weight. If the beam balances near the top or the bottom of the trig at any corner: 1. Remove the test load, platform and cover, exposing the load pivots on the long and short levers. 2. At the corner under test, hone the side of the load pivot knife edge with a whetstone. If the beam stays at the top of the trig hone side A. If the beam stays at the bottom of the trig hone side B. 3. Reassemble the platform and cover, replace the test weights, and check the balance. 4. Repeat the above steps as necessary until the beam balances in the center of the trig when the load is applied on each of the four corners. 5.2 Adjusting the Nose Iron Use the following steps to adjust the nose iron. 1. Balance the beam at zero load and move the poise to 1000 lb. Place 1000 lb of test weights in the center of the scale platform. The beam should balance. 2. If the beam balances at the top of the trig: a. Move the long lever nose iron outward by alternately loosening the nut farthest from the nose iron pivot and tightening the lock nut until the beam balances. Lock the nose iron firmly in place after each adjustment. It will be noted that the nose iron adjustments may be quite sensitive; as little as a 1/8 turn of the lock nut can product the correct multiplication. If considerable adjustment is required it is best to over-compensate to simplify re-balancing at zero. b. Check and adjust the zero balance; repeat steps 1 and 2 until the beam balances at 0 and at 1000 lbs. 3. If the beam balances at the bottom of the trig: a. Move the long lever nose iron inward by alternately loosening the nut nearest the nose iron pivot and tightening the lock nut until the beam balances. Lock the nose iron firmly in place after each adjustment. See 2-a for further instructions on nose iron adjustments. b. Check and adjust the zero balance; repeat steps 1 and 3 until the beam balances at 0 and 1000 lbs. Adjusting and Sealing Instructions 3
5.3 Sealing the Poise Use the following steps to seal the poise. 1. Re-balance the beam at zero. Place the poise exactly at the 1000 lb mark and place 1000 lb of test weight in the center of the platform. They should balance. Use the following steps if the beam balances near the top of the trig. This means the poise is too light. 1. Remove the test load from the platform and return the poise to zero. 2. Place a small piece of lead on the poise and readjust the zero balance. It is better at first to overestimate the amount of lead required. 3. Place the poise at the 1000 lb mark and replace the 1000 lb test load on the platform checking the balance. 4. Repeat steps 1 and 3 by adjusting the amount of lead used at each trial until the proper balance is obtained. 5. Remove the beam from the scale and insert the amount of lead required to obtain the proper balance into the sealing hole in the bottom of the poise. Use a drift pin to stake the lead firmly in position using care to avoid loss of any lead. 6. Replace the beam in the scale. 7. Check the balance both at 0 and with the poise at the 1000 lb mark with a 1000 lb load applied. Use the following steps if the beam balances near the bottom of the trig. This means that the poise is too heavy. 1. Remove the load from the platform and remove the beam from the scale. 2. Drill a hole or remove lead from the bottom of the poise until the beam balances near the top of the trig. The poise is now too light. 3. Follow the instructions in the first section. The fractional poise is sealed in the same manner except that a 100 lb weight can be used in place of the 1000 lb weight. 5.4 Checking Sensitivity Reciprocal (SR) Use the following steps to check the sensitivity reciprocal. 1. Place eight ounces of fractional weights on the platform. Balance the beam by using the poise, locking it in place with the thumb screw. 2. Add more fractional weights to the platform until the beam just touches the top of the trig. Record the value of the added weight. 3. Remove the added weight; the beam should still be in balance with eight ounces on the platform. 4. Remove the weight from the platform until the beam just touches the bottom of the trig. Record the value of the weight removed. 5. Replace the weight removed so that the weight on the platform is again eight ounces. The beam should be in balance. 6. Move the poise to the 1000 lb position and place 1000 lb of test weight centrally on the platform. The beam should balance. 7. Add more fractional weights to the platform until the beam just touches the top of the trig. Record the value for the added weight. 8. Remove the added weight; the beam should be in balance with 1000 lbs eight ounces on the platform. 9. Remove the weights from the platform until the beam just touches the bottom of the trig. Record the value of the weight removed. 10. If the value of the weight removed in step 9 differs from the value of the added weight in step 7, repeat steps 1 through 9 until the values are equal. 11. It should not be necessary to add or remove more than eight ounces of weight for the beam to act as indicated. 4 F594-PLS Platform Beam Scale Installation Manual
If the beam exhibits a marked difference in SR between empty and loaded conditions, check for the following: 1. High SR loaded, low SR empty The pillar and/or beam load rod may be out of plumb to the left at the top as viewed from the front of the scale. Correct by filling the underside of the pillar where it rests on the frame bringing the pillar and/or beam load rod into a plumb pattern. See application instructions for assembly or disassembly. 2. Low SR loaded, high SR empty The pillar and/or pillar rod may be out of plumb to the right at the top as viewed from the front of the scale. Correct as in step 1. 3. Set the hook bolts in their correct position and secure them in place by use of the lock nuts. 4. Check all screws and lock nuts throughout the scale for correct tension.
