BlaXtair 1 Product Overview Technical Datasheet Figure 1 Blaxtair sensor head Blaxtair is an intelligent cameraa with the ability to generate alarms when a pedestrian is detected in a predefined area. It is specifically developed for industrial vehicles. Blaxtair implements outstanding features, having no equivalent on the market: Blaxtair is the only device able to identify pedestrians among the obstacles detected around the vehicle. This unique feature is possible thanks to Blaxtair patented image processing. 04/02/2015 1/16
1.1 Composition Blaxtair is basically composed of: One or several sensor heads installed onboard the vehicle for monitoring potentially high risk pedestrians / vehicles collision areas. A sensor head entails a stereoscopic video camera specifically designed by Arcure. If necessary a cap can be fitted on the sensor head for a physical protection; One or several processing units (installed inside or outside the vehicle); An audible alarm (included in the monitor or separate device); A 7 color display. It displays the video captured by the sensor head(s) and also Blaxtair s warning maintenance messages; A visual alarm included in the display completed by a colour LED (option) installed in the cabin. With Blaxtair, classical cameras are no longer necessary. 04/02/2015 2/16
1.2 Operation Blaxtair is a warning system aimed at preventing collisions between industrial vehicles and pedestrians. Should a pedestrian enter a danger zone around the vehicle, the driver would be immediately warned by a visual and audible alarm. The size and the shape of the danger zone are set up depending upon the vehicle type and the company safety policy. These settings are done once for all when servicing the Blaxtair, thanks to a very straightforward Man Machine Interface. No further setup is necessary, making the installation and the operational use of the system very simple and reliable. Figure 2 shows examples of vision and detection area of a Blaxtair installed on a loader and on a forklift: The blue area is the field of view covered by the sensor head and displayed on the 7 screen installed inside the cabin. The orange area is the danger zone (included as above). As soon as a pedestrian enters this area, the driver is warned by an alarm (red light and audible alarm) Figure 2 Danger zones at the rear of a Loader and a Forklift For a danger zone, it is possible to select one of the 2 following detection modes: 04/02/2015 3/16
All obstacles : warning whatever the type of obstacle over a predefined size Pedestrian only : warning only if the obstacle is a pedestrian, avoiding any useless alarm A combination of the two modes is possible by combining all obstacles zones together with pedestrian only zones. Different warning signals can be defined between obstacle detection area and pedestrian detection area. 1.3 Ground recognition Blaxtair assesses constantly the ground position. This feature is especially useful when the attitude of the machinery changes a lot (depending on its load for example) or when the machinery works on very uneven ground. Classical systems like radars or ultrasound would alert untimely the driver of a loader that goes down a very strong slope, while Blaxtair will not mix up the ground and an obstacle. It warns the driver only if a pedestrian appears to be in the danger area, even in an extreme situation like in the picture presented here. 1.4 Maintenance Blaxtair doesn t need any specific maintenance, except a regular cleaning of the sensor head windows. Auto diagnostic tests run permanently in order to monitor Blaxtair hardware status and to detect possible failures (like overheating, cable damages, etc.) 04/02/2015 4/16
2 Detection principle Blaxtair implements advanced image processing algorithms, which have been developed and tested for more than 15 years by the CEA LIST, a laboratory of the French CEA organization (Commissariat à l Energie Atomique). CEA LIST is one of the world leading real time image processing laboratories. Thanks to a stereoscopic sensor head, specifically developed in order to achieve the highest performances in industrial environment, Blaxtair detects and locates the obstacles using triangulation. A shape analysis of the obstacles determines whether they are pedestrians or not. 04/02/2015 5/16
3 Configurations It is possible to configure Blaxtair in order to fit specifically customer s need, according to the type of machine and the application. 4 typical examples are provided hereunder. BXT2.67-V4.x 4 Extended configurations 4.1 Alternate configuration (MR90A) For vehicle moving back and forth, alternate configuration MR90A is especially well adapted. It is composed as depicted by the figure hereunder. With a sensor head mounted in the front of the vehicle and one in the back, the detection is active in the front when the machine is moving forward and the in the rear when moving backwards. The active detection area, as well as the video displayed on the monitor, switch automatically when the gear is engaged. This configuration is especially well adapted for tandem rollers or vertical order pickers. 04/02/2015 7/16
4.2 Large detection field configuration (MR180) For large vehicles or rotating vehicles, a configuration implementing 2 sensor heads working simultaneously is recommended. It is composed as depicted by the below figure. Every monitor displays the video of the corresponding sensor head. This way, the driver can use the monitor very simply, just like he would do with mirrors, with the difference that the monitors display a very large field of view processed video, with improved contrast and rendering. In order to avoid confusing the driver, detections are gathered by one processing unit (called Master) which in turn triggers the alarm. This configuration is especially well adapted for excavators, large wheel Loaders or large trucks. 04/02/2015 8/16
4.3 Extended Field of View It can be necessary to complete a detection zone by additional visualization area, for various purposes. To fulfill this need, Blaxtair can be combined with up to 4 BlaxtairView cameras 1, as presented on the below figure. 1 For BlaxtairView characteristics, please refer to BlaxtairView datasheet. 04/02/2015 9/16
The video of BlaxtairView and of Blaxtair are presented on the same monitor if necessary. In addition, BlaxtairView videos can be presented simultaneously or independently on the monitor. Blaxtair video is always presented on the full screen for a better readability, as Blaxtair monitors the most dangerous zone around the vehicle. Blaxtair video is automatically presented on the display as soon as the gear is engaged. As an example, a configuration combining 2 BlaxtairView and 1 Blaxtair is often used on sweeper trucks. The 2 cameras are devoted to monitor the sweepers, while Blaxtair watches rear the truck to make sure that nobody is put in danger by the motion of the vehicle. 5 Technical characteristics 5.1 Performances Detection Latency Detection update frequency Operational Illumination range < 300 ms (according to ISO16001) Up to 8 fps in pedestrian mode 10 fps in obstacle mode from 100 Lux to 80000 Lux Robust to temporary blindness (dust, dazzle, smoke, steam, etc.) Operational in rain / snow / fog conditions 2 04/02/2015 10/16

BXT2-V3.0 5.5.4 INTEGRATION Blaxtair can be fitted on any type of vehicle. Blaxtair is especially designed for being installed on any type of industrial vehicles. Depending on the area to be monitored and on the vehicle, several sensor heads can be necessary. Sensor heads shall be installed in a way that the area is covered by the field of view without blanked zones. Therefore, they shall not be installed beyond a part of the vehicle that could interfere. Blaxtair can be installed by any skilled technician familiar with equipment for industrial vehicles. After a short training on the job with an Arcure s expert, technician will be certified for installing Blaxtair on any vehicle. Warning Blaxtair is an alarm device. It is intended to help the driver in his task; it cannot replace the driver s vigilance, or his responsibility. Blaxtair is designed to supplement other safety practices. The system is not designed to detect small objects. It might be possible that in some specific circumstances, an object or a pedestrian in the danger area may not be detected. The responsibility for vehicle control and safe vehicle operations remains with the driver. Please contact us for additional information. 04/02/2015 16/16
