David Theodore Graham (1861 1916) David Theodore Graham was born April 1861 to James Graham and Angelina Gross in Southampton Township Cumberland County Pennsylvania. On June 10 th 1880 David worked as a hired hand for Jacob Myers in the Newville area of Newton Township. On June 11 th 1880 David lived with his father James and his 2 nd wife 1 Caroline in the Newburg area of Hopewell Township. Jacob Myers and his family lived very close to Martha E. Farner in the Newville area, which is about 8 miles from where David lived in Newburg. We suspect working as a farm laborer in the area, David met and married Martha Elizabeth Farner in 1882. Martha was born in 1859 to Henry and Martha Farner. David and Lizzy lived in the Newburg, Oakville, and Irishtown area of Hopewell and Newton Townships of Cumberland County Pennsylvania. Irishtown is known today as the Green Spring s area in present day North Newton Township. Like his father James, David was a fence 2 maker and copper (barrel maker). David and Lizzie had nine children. David and Martha had eight children. One child, Frank Elmer Graham was reported being born to David and Martha on February 6 th 1874 3 or 1873, which our research will show he may not be the child of David and Martha. 4 There is also one child that was not reported to be born to David and Martha, Adeline L. Graham, which we show be to be a daughter. 5 In the 1900 census record, Martha indicated she had 7 children, and 6 were still living. i. Lillie Belle Graham born September 1882. Lillie was 23 years old when she married 44 year old Adolphus Morrison on September 1 st 1904 in Carlisle Cumberland County Pennsylvania. Adolph was born in 1860 to George W. Morrison and Catherine A. Crull. 6 They lived in of Three Square Hollow. Adolph was previously married to Lura F., who was born in 1862 and died in 1895. Adolph and Laura had a child named Lula A. Morrison who was born in 1887 and died 1895. Both Laura and Lula died as a result of the birthing process. They were buried in the Salem Stone Church Cemetery in Carlisle, Cumberland County Pennsylvania. Adolph and Lillie had five boys and two daughters: Russell, Mervin, Roy, Elizabeth, Ralph, Emma, and William. William Emory Morrison was born August 27 th 1917, but died nine days later from spasms on September 5 th 1917 at the home of his parents, two miles north of Newburg, Wednesday evening. He was laid to rest at the Mt. Tabor Church and Cemetery, Newburg Cumberland County Pennsylvania. 7 Lillie died in 1944 and Salem Stone Church Cemetery in Carlisle, Cumberland County Pennsylvania.

ii. iii. Zora Clara Graham was born April 8 th 1895 in Newburg. Zora was named after her Aunt, Clara Zora Graham-Stouffer. She was 21 years old when she married 23 year old Frank R. Hoch on July 31 st 1915 at her parent s home in Newburg Cumberland County Pennsylvania. Frank was born in 1892 to Frank K. Hoch and Jennie D. Davidson. 8 Frank and Zora moved to the Harrisburg, Penbrook, and Linglestown areas of Dauphin County Pennsylvania. Frank died in 1939, and Zora died March 12 th 1968. They were both laid to rest in the Willow Grove Cemetery in Linglestown. 9 Effie Mae Graham was born in 1889, and she died in 1945. She married George Atley Farner. They were both laid to rest in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Plot: B5, in Newville Cumberland County Pennsylvania. 13 v. Sarah Ellen Graham was born April 8 th 1885. 14 The family record indicated 1892-1894. 15 She died in 1894, unmarried. Sarah was laid to rest in the Oakville United Methodist Church Cemetery, Cumberland County Pennsylvania. 16 vi. Anna J. Graham born February 2 nd 1885. Her birth is listed as MS, or MI. vii. Calvin David Graham was born October 4 th 1899 in Newville Cumberland County Pennsylvania. She was 22 years old when she married a 32 year old Henry Raymond 23 Shoemaker on May 23 nd 1922 at Oakville, North Newton Township Cumberland County Pennsylvania. Henry was born in 1886 to John H. Shoemaker and Minnie Beam. 24 Adeline died in 1940, and Henry died in 1950. They were both laid to rest in the Mount Holly Springs Cemetery in Mount Holly Springs, Cumberland County Pennsylvania. 25 Adeline would have been missed as a child, but her marriage application indicated her birth parents were David Graham and Elizabeth Farner. 26 In 1920, before Adeline married John Shoemaker, she was identified as a cousin living with Wilmer Clippinger Farner and his wife Mary Jane Arbegust in their home on the Big Springs Turnpike in West Pennsboro Township of Cumberland County Pennsylvania. 27 Adeline Graham is the daughter of David T. Graham and Martha Elizabeth Farner. 28 Wilmer Clippinger Farner is the son of Daniel and Mary Farner. Daniel is the brother of Martha Elizabeth Farner. End Notes 1 There is a David T. Graham in the June 10 th 1880 census record, who is 18 years old (b.1862) working as a hired hand for Jacob Myres (Myers). This family lives in between Martha E. Farner and Elmer Divin. Our David Graham was recorded living with James and Caroline on June 11 th 1880. There are no other David Graham s with the same profile living in the Cumberland County region. This is the same David Graham, and it would be about 10 miles between where David lives in Newburg with his parents, and in the Newville area of Newton Township where he worked as a hired hand. 2 David Graham s obituary mentioned he was survived by his wife and seven children, three surviving brothers, but didn t list their names, and two sisters: Mrs. Carbaugh of Shippensburg and Mrs. Smith of Newburg. The sisters are Agnes Carbaugh and Sarah Smith. There is no mention of half brothers or sisters. 3 Frank Elmer Graham Name and Birth Date: The information came from his WWI Draft Registration, Pennsylvania; Registration County: Cumberland; Roll: 1877942; Draft Board: 2, United States, Selective Service System. World War I Selective Service System Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918. Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration; M1509, 4,582 rolls. 4 Franklin Elmer Graham Parents: If Frank s birth year is 1874, David Graham would have been 13 years old, and Elizabeth Farner would have been 17 years old. This is possible, and a little weird. But then in the 1900 Frank Graham Census, he was listed as a ward in the home of W. A. and Clara Stouffer, and his birth was recorded as February 1876. And according to the 1900 census record, David and Martha where married for 18 years (married in 1882), and Martha indicated she had 7 children and only 6 were still living. All censuses are cited in the Bibliography. 5 Adeline L. Graham is a daughter of David and Martha: This information came from the marriage record of Adeline and John H. Shoemaker, where Adeline lists her parents as David and Elizabeth Farner. Elizabeth is how Martha was often referred to in her family, and how her other children referred to her in their marriage applications.
