Gypsy Queen Shawl by Pippin Poppycock The Gypsy Queen Shawl is the first pattern in my Pride of the Gypsies collection. I wanted something big, something to wrap around in on those warm summer nights while sitting barefoot on the grass staring up at the night sky watching the stars float past. Yarn: Stylecraft Classique Cotton 4ply I used 10 ball in white. However, you may want to have a few extra. If you want to be creative and use more than one color, you can plan your colorway using the coloring picture at the end of the pattern. I made 13 squares from each ball and I had a few yards left, which I saved for the fringe. Hook: 3.25mm US Terms Motif Measurements: Base Square 4 x 4 (10cm x 10cm) Video Links: Its Crochet O Clock Method: Motifs are join as you go. You will complete one full motif as your base square (Rounds 1-4) then each additional square will be rounds 1-3, using the 4 th round to join as you go. Stitches Used: Magic Loop CH Chain SL ST Slip Stitch SC Single Crochet DC Double Crochet TR2TOG Treble 2 together TRCL Treble Cluster: tr3tog in same chain space SC2TOG Single crochet 2 together

Join, fasten off. Totals = 12 ch7 spaces, 12 sc, 56 dc s For the join as you go method you complete round 4 as shown, but replace the 4 th chain of the chain 7 s with a slip stitch in the adjacent chain 7 (see picture J1, J2 & J3)

You do not join corners on the outside edge. Just use a st marker to hold them together for the border round. Pic J3 Join as you Go Picture: J1

Picture: J2 3 4 5 1 2 Base Square Picture: J3 Continue to add motifs until you have 13 across the top (79 full motifs in total) Half Motifs To square of the top edge we will need to add our half motifs,

(place a st marker) *ch7, sc in the 4 th dc of fan, {ch7, sc in the next ch7} twice, Ch7, sc in 4 th dc of fan, ch7, sc2tog catching the two corner loops.* Repeat to bottom corner. You should end with a sc in bottom corner. Ch3, sc in same corner space. *ch7, sc in the 4 th dc of fan, {ch7, sc in the next ch7} twice, Ch7, sc in 4 th dc of fan, ch7, sc2tog catching the two corner loops.* Repeat to top right corner. (Your last sc should be in the corner ch7 sp) In bottom corner (ch3, sc) *Ch7, sc in next ch sp* repeat to top corner. Ch7 join to marked st. Working along top edge. sc in each st across to end, Join with a slip st to first sc (marked st) Round Four ch1, 7sc in each ch sp to bottom corner, 5 sc in bottom corner, 7 sc in each ch sp to top corner. Working along top edge. sc in each st across to end, Join with a slip st to first sc, Fasten off. Blocking It is recommend blocking your cotton shawl. Lay your shawl out on a blocking mat. Starting with the bottom corner and working your way out and up. Stretch your motifs and pin as you go. Once pinned out spray with water until damp. Let dry overnight.

Fringe The fringe is made with two 12 (30cm) strands. (I found it easier to cut multiples by wrapping yarn around a 12 cardboard square and cutting at both ends). Fold two strands in half. Insert your hook through the first sc from behind to front. Pull the center of the strands through st. Tuck tail ends through the loop and pull. Skip next sc and repeat. You should have a fringe in every other st. I found it quicker to pull strands through multiple stitches and then go back and pull tail end through. Assembly line style,. Congratulation your Gypsy Queen Shawl is complete
