WALTER SCOTT S Who pays for the houses and renovations on Brother vs. Brother, since no homeowners are involved? Susie C., Trestle Glen, Calif. A: Unlike Property Brothers, where homeowners ante up the funds for the renovations, on Brother vs. Brother: Jonathan vs. Drew, all the money for the purchase and remodeling of the homes comes out of the pockets of the Scott brothers. In season six of the HGTV siblingrivalry competition (May 23), the 40-year-old twins will each have six weeks to buy, transform and sell two unique homes. This year s competition is going to be more intense than ever, and I m definitely not letting Drew win again, vows Jonathan. 5 THINGS JIM BELUSHI ROCKS ON In the drama Sollers Point (now in select theaters), Belushi, 63, plays the father of a 24-year-old son (McCaul Lombardi) under house arrest in their Baltimore community after being released from prison for dealing drugs. Here are five facts about the Emmy-nominated Chicago native. He identifies with his Albanian ancestry and was awarded honorary Albanian citizenship. He continues his brother John s legacy by performing his musical role in the Blues Brothers with original member Dan Aykroyd. His first voice-over for animation was as a pimple on Krumm s head in Aaahh!!! Real Monsters on Nickelodeon. His brother turned down the role in About Last Night so Jim could play the part a role that changed his life. He says he can die happy because the Bears won a Super Bowl and the Cubs won the World Series. ELLE FANNING GOES GOTHIC In the movie Mary Shelley (May 25), Fanning plays the title role as the wife of 1800s British poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, in a troubled marriage of love, loss and betrayal that she ultimately channels into the writing of the classic novel Frankenstein. She was only 18, she had already left home, lost a child and was in a scandal, says Fanning. Her life was pretty tragic, but extraordinary. MISS USA ON THE WAY Nick Lachey and wife Vanessa were competitors on season 25 of Dancing With the Stars, but on May 21, they ll show they re perfectly in step as hosts of the two-hour live Fox TV special Miss USA 2018. Reigning Miss USA 2017, Kára McCullough, will crown her successor, who ll become the 67th woman to hold the title. Nick, 44, is a newcomer to the world of beauty pageants, but Vanessa, 37, has firsthand experience and a tiara to prove it she was Miss Teen USA in 1998. WALTER SCOTT ASKS Alden EHRENREICH The Beautiful Creatures and Hail, Caesar! star, 28, plays young Han in Solo: A Star Wars Story (May 25). The rascally space smuggler meets his co-pilot, Chewbacca, and galactic gambler Lando Calrissian in this prequel to the original 1977 Star Wars. What can fans look forward to? You meet Han at a different stage in his life and get to watch how he becomes who he becomes. It feels a little bit like a biopic. There are a lot of classic genres to which the film tips its hat noir and Western elements but, most fundamentally, it s a high-adventure yarn in the tradition of great swashbuckling movies. Did you speak to Harrison Ford, the original Han? We had lunch, but we didn t talk much about the movie. I was mainly interested in his career, his journey as an actor and how he s navigated all of that. He was very supportive. He gave me his vote of confidence, so that was really awesome. Who were your early inspirations? When I was a little kid, it was Westerns. I watched a lot of John Wayne movies. Then I went to a middle school that had a great film program, and I fell in love with the movies of the 70s The Godfather, Five Easy Pieces and Klute. I also was drawn to post World War II dramas with Paul Newman, Marlon Brando and James Dean, and movies by [directors] Elia Kazan and William Wyler. What s his favorite Star Wars moment? Healthy Stay SET THE TABLE FOR HEALTHY EATING A few simple tricks can help you eat well and lose weight. By Christine Yu Growing up, Dorothy Beal wasn t allowed to eat sweets. When she went to college and was surrounded by dessert, she began overindulging a struggle that s continued as an adult. I thought I was one Q of those people who d never stop overeating, says the Leesburg, Va., Is resident, now 35. Three years ago, Beal began modifying her habits. Now, I don t eat standing up. I sit down as if I were in a restaurant. I don t eat in the car, she says. By making small shifts in where and how she eats, the mom of three has stuck with her healthy eating goals and she s happier too. Research shows she s on the right track: When it comes to eating well and losing weight, setting the stage for your meals may be just as important as choosing fresh, healthy foods. Set up your environment to work for you instead of against you, says registered dietitian Dawn Jackson Blatner, winner of ABC s competition show My Diet Is Better Than Yours and author of The Superfood Swap: The 4-Week Plan to Eat What You Crave Without the C.R.A.P. These five tips will help make eating healthy easier. 1. Cut the clutter. Messy kitchens may add to your waistline. In a recent study, researchers from the University of New South Wales and Cornell Food and Brand Lab found that people who spent time in a cluttered kitchen ate more cookies than those in a clean kitchen. The chaotic environment cues the mind to feel out of control, which may lead to overeating, says study co-author Brian Wansink, M.D., director of the Cornell Food and Brand Lab and author of Slim by Design. 2. Think like a chef. Why do salad and veggies look so much more enticing at restaurants? When healthy food is presented well, it appeals to all of your senses and you want to eat it, Jackson Blatner says. You can do the same thing at it true that using red plates can help you lose weight? A: Yes! Your brain responds powerfully to colors, and a number of studies have shown that different hues can influence your eating. A study in the journal Appetite showed that people who use red plates tend to eat less. The researchers, from the University of Basel in Switzerland, theorize that because red is associated with the words stop or danger, your mind automatically puts on the brakes when you see the color. That brief pause can slow you down and help you eat more mindfully, and it doesn t seem to negatively affect the dining experience. Another way you can use this brain trick: Place red stickers or sticky notes on diet-busting foods as a way to get your brain to stop and think before reaching for them. Cleveland Clinic psychologist Susan Albers-Bowling home by putting a variety of colors on your plate. If you have a mandoline or spiralizer, cut vegetables into visually appealing shapes. 3. Commit to TPC (tableplate-chair). Instead of eating while standing at your counter or in front the TV, sit down at a table and eat from a plate. This simple change can help you tune in to hunger and satiety cues and avoid eating mindlessly. When you re not really looking at your food, it s difficult to recollect what you ate and it s likely you won t feel satisfied, Jackson Blatner says. 4. Put down your phone. A study from Northwestern University School of Medicine found that blue-enriched light (think smartphones and computers) increases insulin resistance your body s inability to absorb glucose effectively and may alter metabolism. In particular, bright light in the evening causes higher peak blood sugar levels, which, over time, could lead to weight gain, higher body fat and a greater risk for diabetes. 5. Listen up. The sound your food makes when you chew may influence how much you eat. Researchers from Brigham Young University and Colorado State University suggest that paying attention to the Crunch Effect of your food may lead you to eat less. When loud sounds masked eating noises, participants ate more compared to those in a quiet environment, so put away your headphones and turn off the TV during mealtime. ISTOCK 6 MAY 20, 2018

Ask Marilyn By Marilyn vos Savant On Earth, we have the prime meridian for longitude and the equator for latitude to help us designate locations. How are locations defined in space? Daniel Foust, Weir, Texas We imagine a celestial sphere of enormous proportions with the Earth at its center. The north celestial pole and the south celestial pole are our north and south poles extended into space. The celestial equator is our equator located far out in space. Any object can be located on the celestial sphere by giving it two coordinates, similar to the way we do on Earth. HOT summer READS! What could bring Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen, Jane Fonda and Mary Steenburgen n together in one movie? A hilarious plot that involves the racy page-turner Fifty Shades of Grey and plum roles for women. Not only were the awardwinning actresses anxious to work together ( It felt like a dream, says Bergen, 72), all are avid readers and, in some cases, authors themselves. For Steenburgen, 65, ing the film brought back memories of a real book club in Massachusetts Martha s Vineyard several summers ago. We focused on very serious books and there was no wine. In real life, Steenburgen, who plays Carol, a chef in a dull marriage to Bruce (Craig T. Nelson), has been happily married to actor Ted Danson since 1995. If I had a book club today, it would be more like the one in the movie: lots of short books and rosé! shoot- In Book Club (out now), the lifelong friends are shocked when Vivian, a luxury hotel owner played by Grace and Frankie star Fonda, 80, stirs up their lives with the saucy book pick. There are hijinks involving Viagra and onlinedating snafus, and each of the book clubbers experiences an awakening of some sort. Diane Keaton s character, CAN BOOKS CHANGE LIVES? THE WINE-SIPPING FRIENDS IN BOOK CLUB SAY YES! also named Diane, plays a widow whose husband of 40 years has just died. My character loves her children but doesn t want to be a burden to them, says Keaton, 72, herself an author of several books, including By Lambeth Hochwald The House That Pinterest Built (2017). She s an independent woman who loves to love maybe even a new man. A real-life mom of two, Keaton is working on another book as well as shooting Poms, a movie comedy, in Atlanta. Bergen, who plays Sharon, a divorced judge, wrote the bestselling memoirs Knock Wood (1984) and A Fine Romance (2015). She lives in New York City with her husband, real estate developer Marshall Rose, and begins shooting the CBS reboot of her iconic 1990s series Murphy Brown this sum- mer. She was thrilled to work with actresses of a certain age. We bonded over how utterly rare lightning in a bottle that four women over the age of 65 would be leads of a movie, says Steenburgen. Fonda, a best-selling author herself her most recent is Prime Time (2011) was ex- cited about working with Don Johnson (who plays her old flame) and spending time with the other women, whom she didn t know well. You hear that when you re old like I am, you don t make new friends. I don t believe that s true. Keaton agrees, adding that sharing a makeup trailer with Fonda was a highlight of working on the movie. Jane is quite a force and a storyteller, says Keaton, whose character falls for a pilot (Andy Garcia), much to the chagrin of her two adult daughters. Candy and I chatted about her love of painting dogs on her Bergenbags. And Mary is the glue, the patient, motherly type I adore. They re an astonishing group, and I expect to remain friends forever. Candice Bergen Childhood favorite The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame It doesn t get better than Ratty and Moly. Classic Nancy Drew Mysteries (series) by Carolyn Keene As a young girl, I was a big Nancy Drew person. The adult version is Michael Collins [author of the Dan Fortune series]. He s a wonderful writer. All-time faves Old Filth by Jane Gardam Someone left it in my dressing room five years ago. It s the most enchanting, witty, touching story about an orphan who is shipped off to school at age 4; his parents die and he s out hanging loose in the world. Mary Steenburgen Childhood fave The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger Reading it as a child and then re-reading it as a mom (her son, Charlie, is now 34) was particularly poignant. Her reading rule One day I sat down and read 40 books to my granddaughters, who are 6, 4 and 6 months. I have a rule that I never say no to a book. Grandkids Favorite Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren As a child I loved Pippi because she was strong and funny. I love sharing Pippi with my three little girls. On her bookshelf A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles It s so good. I m maybe a third of the way through. On her ipad Leonardo da Vinci by Walter Isaacson Because I travel a lot, I download books, but I still love the touch of a book. CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: STEVE GRANITZ/WIREIMAGE/GETTY IMAGES; NICHOLAS HUNT/GETTY IMAGES; ROB KIM/GETTY IMAGES The Saboteur by Andrew Gross I loved this. It s about a French aristocrat in World War II who becomes a commando, is in the special forces for the British and does hair-raising exploits. That was a really fun one to read. Reading list Heather, the Totality by Matthew Weiner I just finished this and it s masterful. It s so haunting and riveting. I couldn t sleep afterwards. Sticky Fingers by Joe Hagan The writer did a really good job writing about Jann Wenner, the Rolling Stone founder; he s a fascinating, flawed character. Peter the Great by Robert K. Massie This book weighs as much as a little car and it took me most of my 60s to read it. It s so dense and covers so much about Peter the Great, who is such a fantastic character. I found it riveting. Diane Keaton Her favorite local bookstore I love places like Arcana: Books on the Arts in Culver City and Book Soup in West Hollywood. I love books by photographers like Dorothea Lange, Vivian Maier, Berenice Abbott and Sally Mann. On her bookshelf A ton of architecture and picture books, including Rocks and Clouds by Mitch Epstein and Vija Celmins by Vija Celmins. I am obsessed with visual books and my mind is always racing with ideas. A fan of Larry s Keaton tried to option Somebody s Darling from Larry McMurtry, the Lonesome Dove novelist who wrote the screenplays for The Last Picture Show and Brokeback Mountain. That didn t quite work, but I got a lifelong friendship. continued on page 16 MAY 20, 2018 11 PARADE Publications 2018. All rights reserved.

The Ultimate summer Reading List From PBS The Great American Read Vote for America s Best-Loved Novel When I was a little kid, the most precious gift I could ever get was a book, and they were my friends, says Meredith Vieira, who s hosting the new PBS series The Great American Read (May 22, 8 p.m. ET). The show will feature interviews with authors and superfans and asks you to vote on its list of America s 100 best-loved novels to choose the No. 1 beloved work of fiction. (Go to pbs.org/the-great-american-read to vote.) In the meantime, take a look at the list. How many have you read? The hope is the show and the list will remind you how much you actually love to read, Vieira says. Maybe you ll be reminded of a book that you haven t picked up for a while or you ll see something that you never even heard of. It s only recently that I started to pick up novels again, and I ve been reminded of that joy that comes with literally taking a book to bed. I like Alice Munro. I m fascinated with pioneer stories, so I read a lot about the West. Life changers What I found in my life and it s one of the things that s kind of made me a person of faith is that every time I m in need of something, someone gives me a book that speaks exactly to the need. For example, when I was married to Ted Turner but knew the marriage wasn t going to last, I knew I wanted to write a book. A house guest brought me a gift, which turned out to be my first Anne Lamott book, Bird by Bird, a book about writing. Oh, my God it meant so much to me. And then somebody gave me Traveling Mercies [also by Lamott], which taught me to live in the present moment and find miracles in small, everyday things. 16 MAY 20, 2018 PARADE Publications 2018.
