October November 2014 2013 WELCOME We welcome you to our members bazaar which is being held on sewing day and night this month. A big thank you to our hostess groups who will be looking after us. On sewing day we have Sandypatchers and on sewing night our hostess group will be Pally Patchers. VISITORS AND NEW MEMBERS If this is your first visit to sewing day or night and you do not have a group, please feel free to sit at the Loose Threads table to meet us. We are delighted that you have joined us. Visitors are welcome to attend three times, but then they are are required to join as members to continue enjoying the benefits that membership provides. COMMITTEE NEWS Following the AGM, we have a few new faces on our committee. Jill Macdonald joins the management committee as our association secretary, and Helen Perlman is our membership secretary. New members joining the General Committee are Carla Morris as Quilters Quarterly editor, Pam Richardson as librarian and Susan Creer as keeper of the goods. More information about the committee can be found on page 2. At the time of writing, two vacancies exist on the general committee hostess group coordinator, (sewing day) and Stitched and bound exhibition convenor. Quilt Detail: Natures Garden - Margaret Manson MEMBERS BAZAAR Tuesday 21 st September Beginning at 10 am We ask that members do not arrive until 9.45 am on the morning of the bazaar as we will not be admitting you before that time. This is to allow our sellers adequate time to set up their stalls and displays ready for purchasers. I am looking forward to seeing you there. I am sure there will be some bargains to be had! MORNING TEA: No volunteers have offered to take on the position of hostess group coordinator for sewing day since my email earlier this month. What can we do about this? It really does mean that as from next month there will be no tea, coffee and biscuits for members if no one takes on this position. I am hoping to talk to you all about this on sewing day so please come loaded with suggestions and ideas, not only about how we can fill this job, but also how we can encourage more new faces on our committee. In the interim, Roberta Chantler has offered to bring the milk and biscuits for this month. A huge thank you to Roberta. Tea and coffee will be available from 10.15 am at this meeting to give everyone a chance to set up ready for the bazaar, which is usually such a busy day! Sheila QUILTERS QUARTERLY Introducing Carla Morris Carla Morris, the new Quilters Quarterly editor, works as a professional editor for publishing houses such as Oxford University Press when she is not sewing and blogging under her Granny Maud s Girl alias. She is also a former chair of the Institute of Professional Editors accreditation board, the national body that examines professional editors skills. A Word from Carla The next edition of Quilters Quarterly will have a new editor and a new look. If you or someone in any of your groups has made anything special or done anything interesting and relevant to our craft, we would love a story and photographs (high resolution) to include in the newsletter. Please contact Carla Morris at 0415 593 065 or qqeditor@gmail.com. WAQA LIBRARY We welcome Pam Richardson as our new librarian this month. Pam is a retired librarian and looks forward to sharing her experience with our members. Ross Ellis and Thea Williams will continue to assist Pam in the library. Please note a change in library hours on sewing days from this month: Library opens at 10.am Library closes at Midday. 2

COMMUNITY QUILTS Gwen Parry ELLENBROOK EXHIBITION Judy Campbell Robin Gartner has prepared another interesting block of the month for us all. This will be the last for 2014. Please remember to bring in your September strippy and scrappy blocks. Yes, the community quilts group will have lots of interesting things for sale at the members bazaar. We are self-funding for wadding so this is our big chance to prepare for 2015. Happy shopping! Are you interested in helping out with teaching patchwork to the girls at Esther Foundation in South Perth? Please email Gwen. The last 2014 community quilts bee will be from 10 am until 4 pm, Sunday 26 October, at Alexander Park Craft House. If you would like to join us for a busy, productive sewing day, please email Gwen. Happy quilting. waqacommunityquilts@gmail.com Member s Competition We have been invited to assemble an exhibition at the Ellenbrook Gallery in August and September 2015. We are hoping to display as many different styles and aspects of quilting as possible to begin a celebration of 40 years of WAQA. (The formal 40th Anniversary will be in 2016.) A catchy title is needed for this exhibition, so we invite all members to submit an entry to the title competition. Entries will close on December 30, 2014, and the winner will be announced at the January 2015 sewing day. Entries can be emailed to Judy You never know you may be lucky enough to win a bar of chocolate! Please contact Judy if you intend to make a quilt. She would love to hear from you and talk about your ideas. Email: cyduj@bigpond.com Phone: 9438 3528 CRAZY QUILT Lesley Fry CHALLENGE QUILTS 2014 Meg Cowey Challenge Quilts Vessels The deadline to complete your challenge 50 cm x 70 cm quilt is drawing close - the end of this month. If you are ready to submit your quilt, please bring it to sewing day on 21 October as I will be there to collect. If that does not suit you, please contact me via email or phone to arrange alternative collection. I will also be returning quilts from the 2013 Challenge. Thanks to all who participated. It was a varied and intriguing exhibition. For the history of our association exhibition at the Ellenbrook Gallery in August and September 2015 (explained above), the Crazy/Hexagon Quilt Club would like to create a crazy quilt with as many different blocks as possible. The final quilt size is to be 90cm x 120cm. The colours, style of hand embellishments and the number of blocks is still undecided. If you would like to contribute a block to this project, or receive more information, please contact Lesley. Email: lmfry148@bigpond.net.au.
