[1] Submitted by tracysmith [2] on Sun, 2012-04-15 04:38 [1] The inspiration piece is built out of cedar, if you use a different species of wood and plan to use this outside as intended, make sure you take steps to weather proof your piece of furniture! :-) Summary: As a member of both Ana's community and The Handyman Club of America, I get a lot of inspiration for my projects. I happened to find inspiration in the latest issue of Handy Magazine and the raised planter box that they feature. They do list the plans for the planter, however, it requires the use of special tools like a router table, chisels and large Page 1 of 13
pipe clamps. Those may not seems like "special" tools to some of you, but I don't have them so I'm labeling them special. :-) They used pocket hole joinery in their plans, but only in a small part. Why not use them everywhere and make life a bit simpler? I decided to take on the project myself and "re-write" the plans for our community. It is also advisable to review the Getting Started Section. Take all necessary precautions to build safely and smartly. Work on a clean level surface, free of imperfections or debris. Always use straight boards. Check for square after each step. Always predrill holes before attaching with screws. Use glue with finish nails for a stronger hold. Wipe excess glue off bare wood for stained projects, as dried glue will not take stain. Be safe, have fun, and ask for help if you need it. Good luck! Step 1 Page 5 of 13
[19] Make 2 of these panels and set them aside. Keep piece "E" flush to the front of the "D" pieces and attach using 1 1/4" pocket hole screws. Attach "H" 5" up from the bottom of "D" - so the bottom of the cross beam ("H") should be at the 5" mark from the bottom. Step 2 Page 6 of 13
[20] Create the box supports using the diagram above, use pieces "G" & "I" Step 3 [21] Attach the box support to one of the panels making sure to leave a 3/4" gap between the box support and the 2x2 ("D") Use 2" screws through the face of the 2x4's Page 7 of 13
Step 4 [22] Attach the other panel to the box support using glue and 2" screws through the face of the 2x4's Step 5 Page 8 of 13
[23] Attach the two panels of the box using "F". Make sure that you stagger your pocket holes to avoid the PH screws hitting each other during construction. Step 6 [24] Measure 4" from the legs to start your slats making sure to leave an 1" gap between slats as you go across. Page 9 of 13
Slats are "B" pieces Step 7 [25] Add pieces "A" to assembly Step 8 Page 10 of 13
[26] Finally, add the post caps and you're done! To use, you'll need to either add plastic tubs for planting or you can put in a piece of 1/2" plywood and plastic lining. Finishing InstructionsPreparation Instructions: Fill all holes with wood filler and let dry. Apply additional coats of wood filler as needed. When wood filler is completely dry, sand the project in the direction of the wood grain with 120 grit sandpaper. Vacuum sanded project to remove sanding residue. Remove all sanding residue on work surfaces as well. Wipe project clean with damp cloth. It is always recommended to apply a test coat on a hidden area or scrap piece to ensure color evenness and adhesion. Use primer or wood conditioner as needed. Please, if you build this, use common sense. Always check for squareness after each step and if your planting methods require something different, the adjust these plans accordingly. Most of all, I Page 11 of 13
hope you enjoy this! THIS PLAN HAS BEEN ADJUSTED AS PER COMMENTS MADE! :-) Thanks for the feedback so we can make the plans work! This is also one of the perils of not building it yourself first.
