General information General The GEL 25 series absolute encoders produce an unique position value for each angular position via a digital interface with a resolution of up to 28 bits. The absolute position value is available immediately after the absolute rotary encoder is put into operation. The new encoder series includes singleturn absolute encoders (ST), which detect the absolute position within one full turn of 60, and multiturn absolute encoders (MT), which use mechanical gearing to detect the number of complete turns. Compact design Using a standard flange size of 58 mm, extremely compact ST and MT encoders with solid and semi hollow shafts have been designed and include mechanical gearing within a housing length of just 46.5 mm. Robust construction Anodised aluminium is used to provide a highly durable housing The double-bearing steel shaft of the absolute rotary encoder combined with the metallic code disc provides an extremely robust unit. A back cover with O-ring (with optional preset button) seals the housing hermetically. IP 67 protection is achieved with an optional shaft sealing ring. Magnetic measuring principle The operating principle of the absolute rotary encoder is based on the non-contact magnetic scanning of a new type of code disc made of ferromagnetic steel. Giant- Magneto-Resistance (GMR) sensors scan the code disc. The vernier principle is used to calculate the absolute position to a high degree of resolution and accuracy. The magnetic measuring principle provides a high degree of robustness and reliability as well as an extremely stable temperature response. Immune to temperature variations, effects of dirt and oil mist, ew-point proof, Suitable for heavy-duty applications, Resistant even to aggressive media, Magnetic scanning is not subject to ageing, Long, maintenance-free service life. Interface The absolute encoder provides its position data in binary or Gray-Tanne code via a high-speed SSI interface. Parameterisation of output codes, resolution, counting direction and preset is optionally possible using software and an interface card. A high resolution of up to 28 bits and a high clock rate of up to 2 MHz enable even highly dynamic motion processes to be detected with absolute certainty. In addition, the encoder provides sine / cosine signals and their inverse signals with 64 periods per turn and Vpp differential signal levels. The sine / cosine signals are highly interpolatable due to their signal quality. Output signals SSI data word The timing diagram is read out at a clock rate of 66.6 khz (RS 485 differential signal) for example. At maximum SSI clock rate the current position data are available in t > µs. After the supply voltage has been switched on, the current position can be interrogated after 0 ms. clock time out 6 µs SSI data Incremental signal In addition to the SSI data word, the GEL 25 also provides sin/cos and inverse output signals.
