Augmented and Virtual Reality

Mixed / Augmented Reality in Action AR: Augmented Reality Augmented reality (AR) takes your existing reality and changes aspects of it through the lens of a smartphone, a set of glasses, or even a headset. With augmented reality you'll always see what's right in front of you, but with an added virtual layer on top of it. In augmented reality, images are set up to overlap with the user's reality and merge with it, not exactly caring whether it fits in or not. It is like adding a clear layer on top of reality and flashing digital images on it. Since the background is transparent, it would seem as if the digital image is part of reality, but the user is aware that this is not the case. 1

Mixed reality (MR), on the other hand, takes AR to the next level and is, essentially, what many of us initially expected or hoped for AR to be. Instead of just a layer on top of the world we see every day, MR refers to the ability to mix digitally rendered objects into our real environment. Wikipedia defines mixed reality as "the merging of real and virtual worlds to produce new environments and visualizations where physical and digital objects co exist and interact in real time. Mixed reality takes place not only in the physical world or the virtual world, but is a mix of reality and virtual reality, encompassing both augmented reality and augmented virtuality." DAQRI Helmet 2

Benefits of DAQRI Smart Helmet include: Remote expert, which enables a member of staff to connect to the helmet remotely and see through the eyes of the user enabling them to talk, receive guided instruction and agree courses of action Thermal vision, helping users to identify potentially dangerous temperatures preventing scolds and burns while assisting with maintenance or monitoring of plant and machinery Guided work instructions, providing augmented work information in real time helping workers to understand processes reducing errors and time spent on site 3D reconstructions of buildings, enabling workers to visualize the world around them as it is and will be as a construction project progress through to completion overlaying the design at key project milestones Still in development No cost given at this time 3

Skanska UK has signed on to the Daqri Smart Helmet early adopter program and will field test the augmented reality-enabled hard hats this year, according to Construction Enquirer. Skanska is the first UK contractor to become part of DAQRI s early adopter program promoting wearable Augmented Reality (AR) technology. Thomas Faulkner, Executive Vice President, Skanska UK, said: This trial demonstrates our commitment to exploring on site new digital technology, collaborating with technical partners to give us the potential to transform the way we work. DAQRI Smart Glasses Developmental Edition June 2017 4

Developer Edition $ 4,995.00 Microsoft Hololens The introduction of the Microsoft HoloLens to workplaces will transform the way we work. The Microsoft HoloLens is a wireless augmented reality viewer which wraps itself around your head, like a visor. It is most popular due to its ability to utilize augmented reality to display 3D holograms in front of users. The 3D holograms are also able to be pinned down so users can physically walk about the hologram to inspect it. Developmental Addition $ 3,000.00 5

Mixed Reality at Marek Marek 79 year old company that is fairly set in its ways Mixed Reality is a very novel concept Had to have a convincing argument that this was not just a toy for me play with under the guise of R&D Stay on cutting edge of technology Be trend setter rather than follower Help develop use rather than waiting for others to figure it out Convince them that R&D actually means Research and Development We have to test products to figure out if we can use the technology to our advantage. Finally the Toy, I Mean R&D Tech Arrived What were its immediate capabilities not much Pros Internet Browsing Microsoft 365 capable Skype allowed people to see what you were looking at 3D Viewer Beta allowed us to immediately start testing Cons Small field of vision Minimal usable apps 9
