To program Hover, select settings, select sewing, select programmable buttons, select needle stop down and select the middle option. This programs the machine to automatically raise the presser foot mid-way any time the sewing stops (and the needle down function is engaged). This can be a real time saver; alternatively, the Free Hand System can be used for pivoting around corners. Stitch the 2 strips to the gray panel with one layer of lightweight tear-away under the entire denim piece. It will be used later to support the other decorative stitching. On the remaining panel, attach 3 strips vertically (or parallel to the 14 sides) similar to the Front Bag picture. Cut 3 white strips to measure approximately: 11 x 1¼ 6 x 1¼ 9 x 1¼ Stitch the 3 strips to the (front) panel with the zigzag stitch and with a layer of stabilizer under the denim. Create Shaped Flower 1 Note: With Shaping, the size of the shape depends on the hoop selected. Therefore, any alterations listed are for the suggested hoop only. In Sewing, select 0-9 and type in 407, then select the check. Select 0-9 to close the keypad. Adjust the stitch width to 5.5, default length (a 9mm foot will need to be on the machine). Do not remove the stabilizer stitched down with the vertical strips. Use a temporary spray adhesive to hold in place. Prepare the machine for embroidery and thread the needle with Isacord Green #5912 green thread. 2015 BERNINA of America Page 7 of 10

Open Flower #2. Select the Needle tab and attach the hoop when prompted. Attach Embroidery Foot #26. Select the Edit Tab. Drag and Drop the design to the area of the hoop the design is to be embroidered. Use Absolute Check to pinpoint the precise location for the design. When finished, select the needle tab. Engage Resequence. Embroider the flower. When finished, select the flag. Add Flowers 1 and 3 in the same manner. When finished, remove from hoop, but do not remove the stabilizer. Set Aside. Hoop the remaining stabilizer in the large oval hoop and place the back panel in the hoop approximately where the design will be sewn. Select the needle tab and attach hoop when prompted. Select Edit and use Absolute Check to place the embroidery. Select the needle tab and engage the motif Basting Box and Resequence. Embroider and select the single design (flag) when done. Remove excess stabilizer carefully. Set Aside. Add Curved Decorative Stitches to Front Panel Alter the baseline while sewing with the Distortion icon. This feature works best with compact satin stitches, but others may also be used. This technique is sewn with Sideways Motion Foot #40 (only) and is not successful with Dual Feed Engaged. Select Home > Sewing. Attach Foot #40C to the machine; select presser foot selection and select CLR; set the stitch plate to 9 mm Access Setup and deactivate Hover (set foot to stop down). Change the settings on Pattern End and remove the tie-off & cut. CLR the settings on Presser Foot Pressure. Thread with Isacord #0151 Light Taupe. Select the Decorative Stitch Folder 401. These stitches produce beautiful distorted effects: 401, 402, 405, 406, 407, 414, 415, 427 & 429; Stitches 405, 427, 414 & 425 were used in the project sample. 2015 BERNINA of America Page 8 of 10

Select one of the above stitches. Select i. Select Distortion. Ensure stabilizer is covering the area that will be stitched including the edges of the fabric; begin stitching. While sewing, turn the Stitch Width Knob (only). Turning to the right causes the stitches to steer to the right, and likewise with the left. Close the distortion menu in order to find the next stitch. When sewing, ensure the fabric can pass easily under the foot. Create several rows or partial rows on the front panel of the bag. Repeat until you have 3-4 waved decorative stitch baselines. To reset the stitch, touch CLR or touch the yellow-bounded box on screen to reset the setting to 0. Close the i menu. The Front Panel is complete and can be set aside. Designing with the Stitch Designer Watch the Stitch Designer Tutorial (on the bernina.com website or from the DVD in the 880 box) to see how to free hand draw. Designing a Sideways Motion Quilting Stitch (Scribble Circles) Open the Stitch Designer. Turn off the 9mm lock and draw a stitch wider than 9 mm. Activate the Zoom out 2 times to have more screen to draw on. Use the stylus to freehand draw circles as would be used in continuous line quilting. Each Circle will have 3 rotations before moving partially around the shape to start the next circle. When the stitch is complete, check to confirm and save to Personal Program. To save to Personal Program, select the heart icon, select one of the numbered folders and select the created stitch. Stitch the large circles on the 2 white stripes using Sideways Motion Foot #40C. Stitch from the center part of the bag to the outside edges making it easier to plan the start & stop of the stitch. With Sideways Motion Stitching, fingertip guide the fabric keeping it parallel to the fabric (or strip). Optional Monogram (Back Panel) In the open area of the bag, embroider a monogram outline. Select the Paisley Alphabet from Embroidery Folder #6 and scroll to the appropriate letter. Hoop a layer of light-weight tearaway, engage the basting box. 2015 BERNINA of America Page 9 of 10

and embroider only the last color of the letter. The last color is a satin outline. Adding the Zipper & Finishing Up Trim the embellished panels to the same size and trim the lining to match if necessary. Thread the machine with gray silk finish thread top and bobbin. Measure the top edge of the bag and subtract 1. Stitch a thread bar tack across the zipper teeth using the above measurement AFTER moving the tab within the measured area. Use Foot #20C with the feed dogs down and a wide zigzag to create each thread stop. Trim away the excess zipper tape. Fold the 1½ x 4 strip into a ¾ x 4 strip and press. Fold the raw edges into the center and press; cut in half for two 2 pieces. Insert the zipper ends into the folded gray strip and stitch to form a fabric tab at both ends using a straight stitch and Foot #10D with Dual Feed engaged. Attach Zipper Foot #4D and engage Dual Feed. Stitch the embellished panels to the zipper tape RST beginning and ending ½ from the edge. Sew the lining fabric to the zipper tape so that the zipper & seam allowance are encased between the 2 fabrics (main and lining). Open the project so the embellished fabrics are RST and the lining fabric is RST. Unzip the zipper. Stitch around the bag leaving an opening in the bottom edge of the lining to be used for turning. Turn the project right side out; use a point turner to sharpen the corners, if necessary. Stitch the Bottom of the lining closed with Foot #10D. Create a zipper pull from the zipper coil by trimming away the tape from the discarded zipper pieces. Thread through the zipper tab and knot. Enjoy your Mod Zip Bag! 2015 BERNINA of America Page 10 of 10
