Plot Structure Plot is the literary element that describes the structure of the story. Plot shows the causal arrangement of events and actions within a story. The Plot Development Diagram shows how the main events are organized in the plot

Conflict Conflict is the dramatic struggle between two forces in a story. Without conflict, there is no plot.

Conflict Internal Conflict a struggle within a character's mind External Conflict Clash between character and an outside force

Conflict Type Character vs. Character Character vs. Nature Character vs. Fate Character vs. Society Character vs. Self

Character vs. Character This type of conflict finds the main character in conflict with another character, human or not human

Character vs. Nature The main character is in conflict with the forces of nature, which serve as the antagonist.

Character vs. Fate The main character is in conflict with the forces of fate or destiny, which it or a conduit serves as the antagonist.

Character vs. Society The main character in conflict with a larger group: a community, society, culture, etc.

Character vs. Self The main character experiences some kind of inner conflict. Struggle takes place in character s own mind
