Turkey Football Panel

PROJECT TITLE: Turkey Football Turkey Football Panel A Stained Glass Project DESIGNED BY: Jeanne Baruth for Diamond Tech SKILL LEVEL: (Adult 1-5 1 being the easiest, 5 being difficult) 4 TIME TO COMPLETE: 5 Hours ROMANCE COPY: Add a little quirkiness to your window this fall with this turkey football panel. You can t help but smile at this silly bird and his oversized helmet as he dashes for a touchdown. Make this panel in a day, it s just that easy! PROJECT TIP: Work in a well ventilated area away from children and pets. For complete stained glass instructions visit www.diamondtechctrafts.com/images2/project_49.pdf. VENDOR NAME: Diamond Tech INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Make 2 copies of the pattern. Cut one apart using foil shears or cut along the inside edges of the pattern lines with regular scissors. Mark each pattern piece with a simple arrow to indicate direction of the glass grain. Glass direction/grain will either be in the form of the color or texture, if used correctly it will enhance your panel. 2. Glass color is indicated on the pattern with a letter of the alphabet. Layout your pattern pieces on the smooth side of the glass. Trace around the pattern pieces using a permanent marker. Note: If you prefer the texture side of the glass to show in your panel, turn pattern piece over, trace and cut on the smooth side of the glass. When scoring glass, cut on the inside of the pattern outline. 3. Clean each piece of glass thoroughly with vinegar solution and a clean cloth. Foil will not stick properly to glass if dirty or oily. Use a marker, number each piece of glass to correspond with the numbers on the uncut pattern. 4. Using a glass cutter and running pliers, cut out your glass pieces. Use a grinder or a scythe stone to shape and remove sharp edges from the glass pieces.

5. The foil is what makes the solder adhere to the glass. Start with ¼ (1.5ml thick) copper foil. Peel back 3-4 of backing from the foil. Center the edge of your glass piece on the sticky side of the foil. Always start your foil on the inside edge of the glass where it will touch the next piece and be out of sight once it is soldered. Wrap the entire outer edges of the glass with foil and overlap the ends by ¼. 6. Use a fid, the edge of a pencil or popsicle stick to burnish (rub) the surface of the foil on to the edge of the glass. Press firmly, however too much pressure may cause the foil to tear. 7. Gently push down the foil on the corners and sides of the glass. DON T slide your fingers along the foil; glass is sharp and will cut. Your foil must be secured to your glass completely and smoothly to make the solder effectively hold to the glass pieces. 8. Use a craft knife (or sharp blade of any kind) to trim away excess foil, creating a uniform edge along the face of the glass. 9. Arrange foil wrapped glass pieces on a fire resistant surface. A Homasote board works well and can be purchased at your local building supply store. Use the second copy of your pattern as a reference to arrange panel pieces on the surface. Place METAL push pins around the perimeter of your panel to hold the glass in place while soldering. 10. Plug in soldering iron. WARNING: No drinking, eating or smoking while handling lead solder! Pregnant or nursing woman should avoid all lead solder. Open window and turn on fan when soldering. 11. Apply a small amount of flux with a brush to the seam intersections. Tack solder at intersections by holding iron just above panel and allow heated solder to drop onto foil. 12. Unwind about 9 inches of solder from the spool; do not cut. Solder seams by holding iron tip on the foil, perpendicular to the seam. Hold iron as you would a carving knife. Feed the solder into the tip as you move along the foil. Let up on the amount of solder when you come to the end of the seam. Now wipe the tip on a wet sponge and put the iron back onto the stand. Hot Tip: Do not leave the soldering iron in one place on your project for too long; this can crack the glass or cause the solder to melt through. This means the solder will liquefy and fall through the foil seam between the glass pieces. 13. Allow panel to cool, then flip, flux and solder all seams as on the front. It is not necessary to tack solder the back. When flipping panel over be careful; any straight edges/seams can act as a hinge and pull foil away from the glass. Hot Tip: If you are unable to complete your project, remember to clean it with your cloth and vinegar solution, and wrap in plastic or place it in a ziploc bag. This will keep the foil from aging and that makes for easier soldering when you are ready to begin again. 14. Turn project over. Use a pair of pliers or tweezers to hold a jump ring at the upper seam of the panel frame. Brush on flux and add a drop of solder on the ring over the seam. Repeat with second jump ring on opposing seam.

15. When the front and back are completely soldered, wash thoroughly using warm water and soap and a soft brush. Clean both sides, then rinse well and dry. Soldering Tips: Here are some hints: If solder doesn t flow smoothly - apply more flux. If seams bulge over the glass - there s too much solder you may need to melt and pull off the excess. 16. Add turkey legs and feet by coiling 4 of Fun Wire around a pencil and affixing to the bottom of the bird where indicated using E6000. 17. For the faceguard, create a flat sprial from one end of a 3 length silver wire. Bring the loose end up at a 90 angle and bend to create a U shape. Attach the faceguard with E6000, where indicated on pattern. Bring any remaining wire to the back of the glass, nip to shorten and glue in place. 18. Using glass paint add the seam stitching to the football.
