ENGAGEMENT GUIDE

WELCOME Friends, We are so excited to share this BILAL: A New Breed of Hero Engagement Guide with you. BILAL is inspired by the true story of an Ethiopian boy who liberated himself and his family from the cruelty of slavery and went on to become a great leader for his people. He used the power of his voice to stand against greed, hatred and injustice to create change. From February 2nd February 9th, 2018, Community Advocacy Partners is partnering with Barajoun Entertainment and Vertical Entertainment to launch the #PowerofOne Campaign - an initiative to honor those everyday leaders who are courageous enough to use their voice to speak truth to those who abuse power. During this time, we encourage youth, civic, faith, community, business, entertainment and labor leaders to lift up your community heroes on social media and host community screenings to see and discuss the film. This engagement guide will introduce you to the film, the powerful story behind it, and provide you with resources to engage your community in the campaign. We encourage you to share your thoughts and activities around BILAL at @BILAL_MOVIE on Twitter and @BilalMovie on Instagram and Facebook using the #PowerofOne. We look forward to hearing about the ways the everyday heroes in your life are creating social change within your community. Thank you for your support of this important film and for your tremendous work in communities across the country! In strength, Etoy Ridgnal President, Community Advocacy Partners BILAL ENGAGEMENT GUIDE 2

ABOUT BILAL: A NEW BREED OF HERO: Inspired by the life of Bilal ibn Rabah 1,400 years ago, Bilal, a seven-year-old boy with a dream of becoming a great warrior, is abducted into slavery with his sister and taken to a land far away from his home and thrown into a world where corruption and injustice rule all. Throughout his life he undergoes many hardships, through which he discovers an inner strength he did not realize he possessed. Through these experiences, Bilal comes to realize that if he is brave enough to raise his voice and choose his own path - everything becomes possible. It is through his courage that he frees himself and ultimately his community; it is through the power of his voice and faith that his lifelong dream of freedom comes true. Bilal grows into a man who will inspire the world. The Power Of One The story of Bilal inspires us all to find our inner power and take a stand for what we believe is right. He reminds us of The Power of One the belief that one courageous person can make a difference in this world. A reminder that if each and every person embraces their own inner power it can be manifested as a force for good. The Power of Voice The story of Bilal shows us the importance of having the courage to step up within our communities as teachers and leaders. It inspires us to use our voice to guide others, especially the voiceless. Power to Change The story of Bilal inspires us to continue to seek greater understanding and knowledge of the world around us. Knowledge and the freedom it brings has more power to change the world than any chain or sword ever could. Bilal sought the power to change his own circumstances through knowledge and training. We must also be open and willing to accept new ways of thinking if we hope to change the world for the better. Power of Faith The story of Bilal teaches us to believe that the ability to overcome great obstacles exists within each of us. Whether you believe in a higher power or the strength of the human spirit, we all rely on our internal beliefs to push us through difficulties in our own lives. When you allow your belief to lift the heavy stones that have been placed upon you just as Bilal did, you find that the limits you previously put upon yourself no longer exist. Power of Freedom The story of Bilal reminds us that there is nothing more powerful than the human spirit and that we all have the same basic natural rights that can never be taken or given away. It teaches us to embrace our inner strength and cast off the chains within ourselves. To embrace freedom is to live without fear of the chains others may try to place around you. Bilal: A New Breed Of Hero stars Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje ( Suicide Squad, Thor: The Darkworld, Lost) as the voice of adult Bilal; Jacob Latimore ( Detroit, Collateral Beauty, The Maze Runner ) as the voice of teenage Bilal; China Anne McClain ( Descendants 2, Descendants: Wicked World, A.N.T. Farm) as Bilal s teenage sister Ghufaira; Cynthia Kaye McWilliams (Bosch, Nashville, Real Husbands of Hollywood) as Bilal s mother, Hamama; Michael Gross ( Tremors, ER, The Young and the Restless, Family Ties) as Okba the cowardly slave trader; and Ian McShane (American Gods, John Wick: 2, Pirates of the Caribbean) as the voice of Umayya, Bilal s evil master. Originally premiering internationally in 2015, the film has garnered recognition winning The Best Inspiring Movie at the Cannes Film Festival, Best Innovative Movie at the BroadCast Pro Middle East Award, officially selected at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival under Best Feature Film and nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. BILAL ENGAGEMENT GUIDE 3

#PowerOfOne Campaign To amplify the amazing story of BILAL and the everyday leaders in our lives, from February 2nd February 9th, 2018, we are partnering with Barajoun Entertainment and Vertical Entertainment to launch the #PowerofOneCampaign - an initiative to honor and uplift those everyday leaders who are courageous enough to use their voice to speak truth to those who abuse their power. 1. Upload a brief video message on social media sharing how you have seen the #PowerofOne in action in your community or just sharing what the #PowerofOne means to you. Be sure to tag and like/follow @BILAL_MOVIE on Twitter and @BilalMovie on Instagram and Facebook using the #PowerofOne. 2. Host a #PowerOfOne Community Screening and forum by organizing your members, churches, student groups, clubs, friends or community groups to go to the theater together to see BILAL starting February 2nd thru 9th, 2018. Simply go to www.bilalmovie.com to identify a theater in your community and purchase tickets. 3. Invest in our youth s exposure to the film by donating to our BILAL for Students initiative, which will purchase tickets for youth in your community to go see the film and engage in discussion on how they can exercise the #PowerofOne in their own lives. To partner with the #PowerOfOne Campaign, contact CAP at admin@communityap.com. BILAL ENGAGEMENT GUIDE 4

#PowerofOne Community Screenings Overview FEBRUARY 2, 2018 THROUGHFEBRUARY 9, 2018 From February 2nd through 9th, 2018, civic organizations, medical organizations, schools and congregations will screen BILAL together in the theater, then have discussions on the importance of acts of courage and truth telling after the film. Community dialogues are critical in advancing the types of conversation that create real change. This guide is designed to help you think through those conversations after seeing the film. Below are planning tips to help guide your #PowerofOne Community Screenings. HOW TO GET INVOLVED ONE TWO THREE FOUR FIVE Sign Up Visit www.bilalmovie.com to find a theater near you and sign up to host a screening. Partner with a Group or Organization to Watch the Film Together. Reserve tickets at a local theater. Go See the Movie and Host a forum or Q & A afterwards. Identify ways you and your partners can keep this conversation going and continue working together. Afterwards post pictures and videos from your screenings to @BILAL_ MOVIE on Twitter and @BilalMovie on Instagram and Facebook using the #PowerofOne. BILAL ENGAGEMENT GUIDE 5

HOW TO RESERVE A THEATER Below is the information you will need to provide to reserve a theater in your community via www.bilalmovie.com: Point(s) of Contact Phone # Email Address 1st Theatre Choice (or City) Date for 1st Theatre Time for 1st Theatre 2nd Theatre Choice (or City) Date for 2nd Theatre Time for 2nd Theatre # of Tickets Needed (for Private screenings, minimum of 150 seats required) Will you need the theatre for a discussion after the screening? If so, for how long? Do you have audio/ visual needs (microphone, tables, chairs, podium, etc.)? (*Note additional charges may apply) BILAL ENGAGEMENT GUIDE 6

AFTER THE FILM After the film, it s important to provide an opportunity for everyone who saw the film to engage in the discussion. As the leaders of your organizations you know what will work best to meaningfully engage. Here are some general tips: 1. If your discussion will take place immediately after the screening, keep it short. The film is 1hr and 45 min., so we suggest you aim for a 30-minute discussion. Decide in advance of the event a next step action attendees can take: sign a commitment card to engage in a key campaign or learn more about other organizations, create a mailing list to keep community members posted for future events/opportunities to build on this discussion. 2. Pick a location Once you have identified the theater nearest you, talk to the theater management to ensure they will allow time for a post-screening discussion. Some theaters might not be able to accommodate you due to other screenings, but some might be able to adjust their schedules, if you give them enough notice in advance. Choose a location that is easily accessible to public transportation and/or has ample parking for your members. 3. Work with your partner congregation or organization to plan the conversation in advance. Schedule time for a call or meeting to discuss the logistics and agenda for the discussion. Who will lead? What will the format be? Will there be a brief presentation and then opportunity for guests to ask questions? Will someone ask the audience questions so everyone can hear how others processed the film. Have printed materials available for your guests regarding the film and/or your organization s purpose. BILAL ENGAGEMENT GUIDE 7

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS The film BILAL is about the daily decisions we all have to make between inaction and action, silence and courage. In the film, BILAL s mother reminds him that though he is physically enslaved, no one can place chains upon our minds and souls. Refer to the About section on page 3 of this guide to identify key themes to help guide your discussion. Below are a few discussion starters as you explore these themes in your life and that of your community: We hope BILAL s story and this powerful film will be a catalyst for you and others in your community to create change in powerful, culture-shifting ways. 1. How does BILAL use his voice to exemplify the Power of One? 2. In what ways are the themes of this story relevant to your own life experiences and community? Are there examples from your past where you knew you had to stand up to an unjust system or process? What happened? What did you learn? What would you have done differently? 3. Brainstorm or share an existing challenge within your community and discuss ways you can work together to build a stronger, well-informed and empowered community. BILAL ENGAGEMENT GUIDE 8
