1 Student Centre Contents 1. Introduction 2. Live Mathletics 3. Activities 4. Certificates and points 5. Earning and Spending Credits 6. Reporting 1. Introduction Welcome to Mathletics! Mathletics is an effective and exciting way to improve your Maths. You can practise both at home and at school. As long as you use Mathletics regularly with consistent effort, your Maths will improve out of sight! Hi! We are here to give you handy hints and tips. Our tips will help you to get the most out of Mathletics.

2 Getting Started 1) Sign in with your user name and password. 2) After signing in, you will reach your home page.

3 3) Enter Mathlete Maker then click on boys or girls. 4) Create your own look by selecting your hair style, facial features and even your outfit! Now let s do some Maths!

4 2. Live Mathletics 1) Live Mathletics is a fantastic way to improve your speed and accuracy by competing against other players from the international Mathletics community who are online at the same time as you. 2) After choosing your level, you then decide whether you want to play against another person, or against the computer. You can see the types of questions at each level by placing the cursor over the level tabs. You should try to choose the level that is right for you. Look out for bonus points. Your score could double if you challenge yourself. The bonus level has double points.

3) When you play Live Mathletics, your goal is to increase your ranking. There are five different rankings: Raging Rookie through to Human Calculator. Your ranking is based on your recent average. 5 4) After you have chosen your level and clicked on Find Me a Game!, Mathletics will find other Mathletes for you to compete against. The other Mathletes could come from all over the world!

6 5) Your aim is to answer as many questions as you can within 60 seconds. You are competing against the clock, your recent average and other Mathletes. The other Mathletes will be the same ranking as you. You should always try your best to be fast and accurate. 6) Be careful because 3 mistakes leads to a strike out! If you strike out it will change your average and you may go down a level.

7) The game ends when the time is up. You can view your result straight afterwards. 7 8) You can also view your Live Mathletics Report to see if you are improving. To do this, close the results, then open My Report.

9) Next you can either play another round or go to the activities to practise. 8 Go back to your home page to access the activities.

9 3. Activities 1) Select a unit of work from the blue menu. These icons display your test results. The blue bar graphs show your progress in each unit. 2) Now select an activity or begin with Are You Ready? for some warm up questions. You can select from easier or harder activities if you like.

3) Click on Start Activity to begin. There are ten questions in each activity. 10 You can visit the Support Centre before you start. 4) Read the question carefully, enter the answer then hit submit. You can also click on the question mark to go to the Support Centre. Try to work out the answer on your own before clicking on the question mark.

5) The Support Centre will go step by step through the question. 11 You can review the example as many times as you like. You can select other examples to look at. 6) If you do not have time to finish all the questions in the activity, Mathletics will remember where you were up to.

7) When you have practised all the activities, you can take a test for the unit. 12 8) The Animated Maths Dictionary is a great resource to use when you need to know what a term means. You can access it just before you choose a unit or activity.

13 Use the maths dictionary to see animated examples of the term in a maths problem! 4. Certificates and points 1) As you go through the activities, test and Live Mathletics, you will earn points which go towards certificates. You can view your points for the week on the left of the screen. You can also earn credits to spend in the Mathletics shop! (Find out about the shop in the next section.) Click on How is this Calculated? to see the points system.

2) You need to earn 1000 points in a week to earn a bronze certificate. It is possible to do this in one hour! You cannot earn more than 300 points on one activity. This is to encourage you to work on different areas of maths, not just the ones that you are really good at! 14 Your goal should be to get a certificate every week. 3) Click on My Certificate Room to go into the Award Centre.

4) The Award Centre shows how many points you need for the certificates. Also, you can see your certificate tally and visit the rooms where they are displayed! 15 5) To get a sliver certificate, you need to get 5 bronze certificates within 5 weeks. 6) To get a gold certificate, you need to get 4 silver certificates within 20 weeks. This is about half a school year. A gold certificate is something to be very proud of. Print them out and collect them!

5. Earning and Spending Credits 16 When you earn a certificate you automatically receive 100 credit points to go towards adding some new, funky features to your Mathlete! However you cannot make use of the credits until you have earned your certificate each week. So there is now a huge incentive to spend around 1 hour per week concentrating on improving your maths! The shop is where you can spend credits. You can choose from groovy accessories, crazy hair colours and futuristic backgrounds. There are some interesting outfits to choose from too.

17 The Mathletics Reward System Check out some of the cool new looks that you can create when you earn credits!

18 6. Reporting 1) Reports are important, they show how you are progressing. Your results will be graphed and saved each time you complete an activity or a test. You can see if you are improving or if you need more practice. Remember, practice makes perfect! 2) Underneath this graph, you will be able to how well you did for each of the questions you answered. This makes it easier to see what you should practise to improve your score the next time you complete the activity. Click on the support button to go back to the Support Centre. Mistakes are an important part of learning.

19 One last thing. As you can see, Mathletics is fun and easy to use. It can really help you to improve your Maths results. However you must make sure that you use Mathletics regularly and always try your best. Remember you can go as far as you want, the sky s the limit!
