WITH Woodside The Woodside Innovation & Technology Hub Building a community of world-class innovators to unlock tomorrow s growth opportunities. WITH Woodside is a concept aiming to be launched in 2015

PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES Woodside has always relied on the innovation and ingenuity of our people to discover new resources, lower costs and minimise the impact of our operations. In an increasingly interconnected world, the possibilities for collaborative innovation are boundless. We see an opportunity to bring the world s innovators, thought leaders, forward thinkers and brightest minds together, in one space, to bring about new solutions to complex and challenging environments. Through our commitment to excellence, we are developing the Woodside Innovation and Technology Hub (WITH). WITH will build a diverse community of world-class innovators and leaders working together to share knowledge and realise innovation to meet the future needs and challenges of the global oil and gas industry. Building on Woodside s 60 years of achievement and strong history of pushing technical limits, WITH will redefine the boundaries of innovation and technology across the value chain, putting aside competitive mindsets to enable resources, ideas and opportunities to be shared amongst industry, students, researchers, entrepreneurs and subject matter experts. 02 3

KEY SUCCESS FACTORS We consulted global research leaders and learned the key success factors behind our vision for a collaborative approach to innovation. PLAN FOR DISRUPTION: We need to be prepared for disruptions, quickly take advantage of their arrival and build resilience to any impact they may have. COLLABORATE TO ACCELERATE PROGRESS: To innovate more rapidly, we re collaborating differently both internally and externally to bring in new ideas, skills and behaviours that accelerate the development of new products, services and technologies. BUILD A CULTURE OF INNOVATION: A culture that encourages diversity helps us to see old challenges from new perspectives, enabling a constant flow of ideas into the pipeline. ENCOURAGE FLEXIBILITY: To be able to adapt to a rapidly changing world, we re moving away from large physical organisations, by creating virtual environments and regularly refreshing the technology development agenda to define individual project needs and the partners to deliver them. VALUE COMES IN MANY FORMS: The impact of technology development need not be measured only in quantitative terms (e.g. number of patents, return on investment, etc.). Value can also be found in contributions sometimes difficult to attribute, ranging from new external networks to attracting exceptional talent to developing a renewed position in the market. DESIGN THE PHYSICAL SPACE TO SUPPORT INTERACTION: Innovative companies consciously design facilities and tools to support their wanted culture and behaviour. The most innovative ideas, for example, can often be traced back to informal interactions and communications. So we re using facilities and tools at hand (including virtual) to support interaction, real-time communication and relationship development across disciplines. INNOVATION TO US MEANS FINDING OPPORTUNITY IN UNCERTAINTY. 4

INSIGHTS ACADEMIA & EDUCATION FOCUSING ON THE FUTURE OF INNOVATION Interaction area for academia (research and education) with business CHALLENGES SOLUTIONS WITH will enable us to share our world-class capabilities to achieve excellence and unlock new global growth opportunities by connecting people, systems and technology through work streams. Integrating technical and non-technical work streams, WITH will build on Western Australia s legacy of LNG excellence and connect leading talent across the world. Technical work streams Ocean Engineering: We will leverage our capabilities and requirements for floating production facilities to become world leaders in harvesting and refining resources from remote stranded gas fields. Floating LNG (FLNG), together with NearShore LNG, are increasingly seen as game-changing technologies that could solve one of the industry s biggest challenges: how to reduce the escalating costs of constructing gas liquefaction projects. Plant of the future: Linking Woodside s ideas on world-class process plant design with the emerging field of next-generation digital to drive the environmentally compliant, safe and cost efficient production of remote resources. Enterprise artificial intelligence and analytics: The rapid progress of technology such as artificial intelligence and data analytics, sensors and control systems offer oil and gas companies the chance to control or automate high-cost, high-risk or error-prone tasks. While automation offers many potential benefits in the upstream value chain of exploration, development and production, some of the biggest opportunities are in production operations, such as reducing unplanned downtime. WITH will build on Woodside s real world LNG plant expertise - our actual and emerging LNG plant capability, including new technology platforms such as NearShore LNG and ultra modular NextGen LNG. Non-technical work streams Technology innovation will be supported by non-technical work streams to enable us to increase the pace, scale and impact of the work at WITH. Education: Strengthening our knowledge and networks through collaborative partnerships with world-class education providers (e.g. secondary, tertiary and professional) to link education and business together. Education will enable us to think progressively ahead of the curve, by connecting thought leaders through world-class events, encouraging the next generation of students to meet future challenges or collaborating with universities to pioneer research for new opportunities. Commercialisation and deployment: Developing a commercialisation environment that enables new technologies to be deployed, converting ideas with high potential into commercial realities. Collaborative space: Utilising a purposeful world-class, highly interactive, collaborative physical and virtual space in Perth, to link the world s leading facilities and thinkers together to stimulate collaborative innovation. PROGRAMMES & PARTNERS A virtual collaborative environment with facilities for work Programs and Partners connected to the hub REMOTE OPERATIONS CONTROL Implementation and piloting in a Woodside remote operations centre COLLABORATION DEMONSTRATION, EXPERIMENTAL AND WORKSHOP AREA COLLABORATION INCUBATOR ENTREPRENEURS Incubation area for start ups PROJECTS Facility and space for actors to collaborate on projects 8 9
