With a disappearing pen mark a line 6 from each raw edge of both straps, this is the stitch line for attaching straps to the front and back panels. Finished width of each strap will be 1-1/2. 6 6 Make All Pockets 1. Interior Pocket: Gather the Fabric B interior pocket and the Fabric C interior pocket lining. Position them with wrong sides together, lining up along the bottom of the pocket. Wrong side of Fabric C Interior Pocket Lining Right side of Fabric B Interior Pocket The lining will extend 1/2 beyond the front. Fold interior contrast pocket lining down 1/4, wrong sides together and press, Fold down another 1/4 and press again. Top stitch in place and baste along pocket sides and across the bottom. Baste 2. Front Slip Pocket: Gather the Fabric A front slip pocket and the Fabric C front slip pocket lining. Make pocket using the same process as lining pocket in Step 1. Baste 3. Front Pleated Pockets: Gather the Fabric A front pleated pocket and the Fabric C front pleated pocket lining. Make two pockets the same as in Step 1. Baste page 4

On the lining side of each basted pocket mark four fold lines with a disappearing pen. Two fold lines, each 1-3/8 from each side, and two more, each 2-1/8 from each side. 1-3/8 1-3/8 2-1/8 2-1/8 Starting with the 2-1/8 mark on the left, fold and press the wrong sides of the pocket together. Bring this fold over to match with the 1-3/8 mark on the front left. Press. Pin the layers together for basting. Repeat the process with the markings on the right. Press each pocket well, and baste pleats in place. Pleat Pleat Baste Construct Exterior of the Bag 1. Fuse all HeatNBond pieces to the corresponding canvas, then to their matching exterior pieces for the front and back panels and two side panels. 2. Fuse two layers of canvas together with two layers of HeatNBond for the bottom of the bag: fuse one piece of HeatNBond to each canvas bottom, then peel both sets of paper and fuse the bottoms together, with the HeatNBond sides facing. 3. Create side panels: Gather two main side panels and two contrasting side trim pieces. On the trim pieces, mark a 1/2 stitch line on the wrong side, along the one long side. Mark a line 3 up from the bottom short edge of each side panel piece. Right side of Fabric A Wrong side of Fabric C 3 3 1/2 Align raw edge of the trim piece with this marked line, both fabrics right sides together, and stitch along the 1/2 stitch line. Fold line 3 page 5

Fold trim piece down over stitching line, press and topstitch. Then baste the trim piece to side panel along the bottom edge. Repeat for both side panels. Fold line 4. Create bag back panel: Gather one exterior main panel, one contrast back trim piece and one fi nished handle. Mark a 1/2 stitch line on the wrong side of one long edge of the contrast trim piece. Mark a line 3 up from the bottom edge of the back panel. With a disappearing pen mark two vertical lines 4 in from each side of the back panel. Without twisting the strap, line up each short raw edge of the strap across the line 3 from the bottom, and with the outside edge of the strap lined up along the vertical lines 4 from each edge. 3 3 4 4 Starting at the raw edge of each strap top stitch in place. Start at the raw edge and go up to the line marked at 6 from the edge, across the width of the strap, and back down the other side to the bottom raw edge. Secure the strap by stitching two or three times along the bottom raw edge. Repeat with other end of the strap. Line up the bottom trim piece along the line marked 3 from the bottom and stitch along the marked 1/2 stitch line, just as you did in the side panels at Step 3. Fold the contrast trim piece down, press and topstitch along the fold. Baste along the bottom of the bag to secure the contrast piece to the main bag panel. page 6

5. Construct front panel: Gather one exterior main panel, one contrast front trim piece, one fi nished handle and three exterior pockets. Mark a 1/2 stitch line on the wrong side of one long edge of the contrast trim piece. Mark a line 3 up from the bottom edge of the front panel. Align the two pleated pockets with the line 3 up from the bottom edge, and aligned with each side. Baste in place along the sides and bottom. Baste the front slip pocket in between the two pleated pockets, lined up along the marked line 3 from the bottom of the front panel. With a disappearing pen, mark two vertical lines 4 in from each side of the back panel. This line will be placed on the pleated pockets. Sew the strap in place using the same process used in Step 4. Then, attach the bottom trim pieces using the same process used in Step 4. 3 6. Taking care to align all bottom contrasting trim pieces, and using a 1/2 seam allowance stitch side panels to the front and back sections, and then stitch them together. This will form a tube. Press seams open. 7. Add the bag bottom: Gather the main bag tube and the bag bottom. On the wrong side mark a stitch line 1/2 in from all four edges of the bag bottom. 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2 page 7

Start with the long sides, and match the marked lines with each side seam of the bag. Starting at the 1/2 seam allowance line, backstitch, and then stitch along the marked line, stopping at the 1/2 seam allowance at the other end. Repeat for front and back of bag. Trim these corners to reduce bulk. Line up the short side pieces, matching side seams and stitching along the marked line, starting and stopping at the 1/2 seam allowance line. Press seams, and turn bag right side out, pushing out the corners with your fingers or a blunt turning tool. Construct the Lining 1. Add lining pocket: Stack basted interior pocket and the back lining piece with right sides of both facing up. Baste along sides and bottom edge of pocket. With a disappearing pen mark a stitching line 4-1/2 in from each side edge of the pocket. Stitch along this line to divide the interior pocket into three sections. 4-1/2 4-1/2 2. Using a 1/2 seam allowance, sew front, back, and side panels together, using the same process as for the exterior of the bag. Add bottom of lining the same process as the exterior of the bag. 3. Sew four remaining contrast trim pieces (front, side, back and side pieces) together using a 1/2 seam to form a tube. Press seams open. Press the bottom edge up 1/2 wrong sides together, all the way around the tube. Pin the top edge of the contrast trim to the lining, right sides together, all around the top edge, aligning all side seams. Sew with a 1/2 seam allowance. Press the wrong side of the contrast trim towards the wrong side of the lining. page 8

Finish the Bag 1. Slip the lining inside the exterior of the bag, with the contrast trim folded down over the outside of the bag exterior. The interior lining pocket should be on the opposite side from the front exterior pockets. Align all side seams and carefully pin the exterior and the lining together. Top stitch along the top edge of the bag all the way around. 2. Smooth out the lining, and keep the straps out of the way. From the front of the bag carefully pin the folded edge of the contrast to the front of the bag, making sure the lining doesn t get folded on the inside. Top stitch 1/8 away from the folded edge of the contrast trim to fi nish the bag. page 9
