VOLUNTEER NEWSLETTER December December Newsletter Dedicated to D. Edgar Jones East County Donor Center has lost a valued volunteer and friend. D. Edgar Jones, passed away on October 18th, from complications resulting from Asbestosis, Emphysema and COPD. Ed was a Navy man, starting out as a Seaman 1st Class and cook, then advancing to Chief, where he then retired after 22 years of service. He would often brag about how the crew said he made the best buttermilk biscuits at sea! After retirement, Ed went to work as a custodian for the Grossmont School District for another 23 years. Ed and his wife, Lorraine met at a USO dance here in San Diego, and celebrated 65 years of marriage together. They have a daughter, two sons and three grand-children. Ed enjoyed reading, puttering around the house and of course volunteering for our East County Donor Center. You would often hear him singing old songs to our staff and donors. He loved to joke with everyone he met and made sure everyone left with a smile on their face. Our staff considers ourselves the lucky one s whose life was touched by this very special man. We will miss you!

Thank you to everyone who volunteered at the Chargers Drive! We had a very successful drive and surpassed last years collections. We couldn t have done it without you. Below are statistics from the drive. Registered = 908 (prior year = 968) Total RBC s collected = 826 (prior year 745) # of 2RBC procedures = 73 (prior year = 36) Deferral rate = 12.2% (prior year 19.0%) Our very own Gateway Donor Center Saloon Barkeep received an honorable mention. Congratulations to Dick Pilgrim on his Halloween contest win!

Singing Your Praises The SDBB staff members believe that all of you, our valued volunteers, are exceptional people and appreciate everyone who volunteered last month. Please read the following notes of praise that we received about you from some of our team leads, charge nurses, donors and staff. From TL at Magdalena Ecke Family YMCA: Thank you Steve & Vanessa for all of your help today. From Donor at Blood Drive: I would like to recognize James the greeter. Extremely warm smile. From Donor at Blood Drive: I would like to recognize John who has been volunteering with the Blood Bank for years. John is a very nice, always with a smile and good conversation, he never forgets my face. I work at Caltrans and he always comes here. From Donor at Blood Drive: John Sadler and David of the Knights of Columbus with the church are a pleasure to visit with at the refreshment table after the donation. From Spawar Employee: John the volunteer was a welcome treat and I appreciate his time and effort. From Donor at Gateway Donor Center: If you could clone your awesome employees and volunteers, and get them jobs at all the other places we all do business, think how things would change for us all. From Donor at East County Donor Center: The Staff and volunteers at East County Donor Center are always super. From Donor at Gateway Donor Center: Gateway does a fantastic job all the way. I even sit with the two canteen volunteers and enjoy conversation with them. From Donor at Gateway Donor Center: Nothing to improve! I went as a walk-in and the service was prompt, everybody from the employees to the volunteers were very friendly and welcoming. Also very attentive while I was in the snack area the volunteer was making sure everything was fine with me. From Donor at Gateway Donor Center: I wish I could remember names. I would like to recognize Tina, Patricia, Diana and the volunteers at the canteen. The receptionist, the phlebotomist are all very kind and make sure that I am comfortable. All the staff is great! From Donor at Gateway Donor Center: I want to recognize Don and Mary because they treat you like family. From Donor at Gateway Donor Center: I would like to recognize everyone, from the volunteer to the person at the desk, to the individual taking the vitals, to the person drawing your blood; have always been very friendly and accommodating. From Donor at Gateway Donor Center: I have to give a big shout out to the whole TEAM of staff members and volunteers at the Gateway Center. I donated blood on Friday and brought my friend who was going to be a first time donor. She struggled a little bit with dizziness and the whole staff inside the room was friendly, supportive, encouraging and helpful in making my friend feel relaxed and safe. It was really great seeing all the nurses work together in breaking ice packs, opening the ammonia, tilting her chair back, and continually asking her if she was feeling alright. A great first experience for her, even despite the dizziness! I d like to recognize Joanna, Erin, Arlene, Tina, Amy and Jim for all their support. From Donor at Gateway Donor Center: Gwen, Diana, and Martina, Tina all excellent! The couple that volunteer in waiting area of the Gateway Center location, these folks make the experience worth it and are who brings me back!
