Painting Tips: Stenciling: Load a dry stencil brush with paint and remove most of the paint by rubbing the brush in a circular motion onto a piece of dry paper towel. Using a similar brush technique to dry brushing blend your paint using a circular motion over your stencil. If you have too much paint on your brush you will find that the paint begins to puddle under the edges of the stencil, it is 1
always best to start with too little paint as you can always build up your paint layers. Paint Stamping: When I saw the Foam Texture Stamps by Laurie Speltz I was intrigued and had to give them a try! They are easy to use; read the manufactures instructions for use and cleaning first. I used a small foam brush to add paint to the stamps and then randomly applied the stamp to the background area, adding more than one paint color to each stamp to get a variegated look. Glaze Float: This is a very thin float meant to layer a transparent paint layer over the previous application to enhance or deepen a shaded area or a highlighted area. Remember the previous layer must be dry prior to glazing as you can lift the previous layer if it is still wet. This is very similar to a wash effect. Preparation: Using a very sharp pair of scissors cut the Roclon into a 18 wide X 25 long rectangle, if you cut carefully you are cutting your original rectangular piece in half and will give you a second piece for a second banner. Measure 1 ½ on the Roclon from the edge of the piece all the way around and using a ruler and a pencil draw the border area. Measure again ½ for the purple border area. Using painter s tape mask off the border area on the outer edge of the banner, this will protect the border and allow you the freedom to be messy as you paint the center design. Base the ½ border next to the black with Lavender. The Roclon surface comes ready to paint but the wood banner holder will need to be prepped for painting by adding a coat of sealer and sand to a smooth finish. Base the wood with Lamp Black, using the Laurie Speltz Alpha Stencils randomly stencil letters around the edges of the wood pieces with white Gesso. Note the photos for placement. Transfer the word Life to the center of the wood piece. Painting Instructions: Base the L with Indian Turquoise, float shade with Sapphire and highlight with Light Buttermilk. Base the dots with Tangerine, float shade with Tangelo Orange, and highlight with Bright Yellow. Base the I with Peony Pink, float shade with Napa Red, and float highlight with Electric Pink. Dip dot using a stylus with Olive Green. Base the F with Moon Yellow, float 2
shade with Antique Gold and deepen with Honey Brown, and float highlight with Light Buttermilk. Using a SL line the stripes with Lavender. Base the E with Lavender, float shade with Navy Blue and float highlight with Electric Pink. Dip dot with Moon Yellow. Base the blue dots with Indian Turquoise, float shade with Sapphire, and float highlight with Light Buttermilk. Dip dot with Tangerine. Banner Background: The background areas are completed in a very non-traditional manner by squirting your paint directly onto the area to be painted and then blending the paint using your sponge roller and reapplying paint as needed. The background might look slightly mottled, you will stencil and stamp over this background consequently it is unnecessary to blend your paint perfectly. 3 Sky: Place a long string of Snow White directly into the middle of the sky area, this can be a liberal amount of paint, squirt three quarter sized puddles of Indian Turquoise onto the sky area randomly around your white string and three dime sized puddles of Desert Turquoise in a similar manner. Randomly roll your foam roller through your paint and continue to roll mix-blending the three paint colors on the piece. Do not worry if you do not have a smooth blend as you will add stenciling over this layer. Randomly place your Curly Words Stencil onto the sky area and stencil over the words using Snow White. Continue the stenciling process by moving the stencil to position the words as you prefer. Base the snow at the bottom of the banner with Snow White. Blend the snow at the bottom of the banner by working wet into wet, layer Snow White onto the snow area and while the white is still wet blend Desert Turquoise into the white so you see hints of turquoise throughout the snow area. Stencil Electric Pink dots into the background sky area. Using the Laurie Speltz Texture Stamp dots stamp Sapphire dots randomly into the background sky area.
Transfer the house, trees, and sun to the banner and shade around the outer edges of the banner and around the design elements with Sapphire. Transfer the word HOME to the bottom of the banner and float shade around the letters with Desert Turquoise. House: Base the house with Peony Pink, stencil Poodleskirt Pink dots randomly onto the house and using the Laurie Speltz Texture Stamp dots stamp Poodleskirt Pink randomly onto the front. Shade with Napa Red and highlight with Electric Pink. Glaze float with Navy Blue to deepen the shaded areas, this should be a very thin transparent float. Base the snow on the roof above the house and door with Snow White, shade with Desert Turquoise, highlight with Electric Pink. Using a small round brush and a short straight stroke apply the sprinkles using Electric Pink, Lavender, and Navy Blue. Base the window panes with Snow White and shade with Sapphire, line highlight with Snow White. Using a script liner line the window panes with Lamp Black. Base the window frames and door handle with Lavender, shade with Navy Blue and highlight with Electric Pink. Dip dot the door handle with Electric Pink. Base the door frame with Snow White and every other check with Lamp Black. Base the detail above the door with Snow White and the dots with Lamp Black. Trees: Base the trees with Hauser Medium Green and the trunks with Honey Brown. Float shade with Hauser Dark Green, dry brush highlight with Olive Green and deepen the shaded areas by dry brushing Hauser Dark Green into the shaded areas. Sun: Base the circle with Moon Yellow and base every other check in the border with Lamp Black. Dry brush the center of the circle next to the check border with Antique Gold, dry brush the bottom portion of the circle with Tangerine and 4
deepen with Tangelo Orange. Dry brush highlight the upper portion of the circle with Moon Yellow and deepen with Bright Yellow. Base the rays with Antique Gold, dry brush shade with Tangelo Orange and dry brush highlight with Moon Yellow and deepen the highlight with a dry brush application of Bright Yellow. HOME: Base the blue letters with Indian Turquoise, float shade with Navy Blue and dry brush Navy Blue into the shaded areas to deepen. Dry brush highlight with Tangerine and dip dot with Tangelo Orange. Base the O with Lavender, float shade with Navy Blue, deepen the shaded areas with a dry brush of Navy Blue, and highlight with Electric Pink. Dip dot with Electric Pink. Using the Fine Line Painting Pen outline the lettering on the house and HOME letters with Lamp Black. Finishing: Finish with DecoArt DuraClear Varnish Matte. 5
