Multimedia Design 1A: Don Gamble * This curriculum aligns with the proficient-level California Visual & Performing Arts (VPA) Standards. 1. Design is not Art. They have many things in common but also differ in many ways. 2. Society is becoming more technologically focused and we must continue as life-long learners in order to keep up with the changing software and hardware. 3. Design surrounds us every moment of our life and we are interacting with it constantly. 4. Design is primarily used to solve problems and help people filter the massive amount of information and data they encounter on a daily basis. 5. All people, but designers specifically, have a unique set of ethical responsibilities in regards to intellectual property, privacy, and other legal and social concerns related to information technology. 6. Critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making, and inquiry are all integral parts of the process of Design. 1. What is Design? What is Art? How are they similar/different? 2. How is Design affected by context and culture? 3. What are the implications of technology on learning? 4. What is Media? Currently? In the past? In the future? 5. What are the elements and principles of design? 6. How does design surround us in everyday life & help us make sense of the world? 7. How can we best reflect, critique, and analyze our work and that of others?

Unit 1: Introduction to Design and the Creative Process be Basic elements of art and design include: Shape, Line, Volume, Mass, Form, Texture, Value, Etc. Basic principles of art and design include: Balance, Contrast, Harmony, Unity, Movement, Etc. What is design? What is art? What is storyboarding and how can I use it to create a video composition? How do the constructs of space and color intersect with design? What is typography? What is the history of symbols, language and type? Similarities and differences between art and design. The importance of the storyboarding process. The basic history of symbols, logos, and typography. The tools used by designers. Create a storyboard for short films. Draw and sketch the varied principles and elements of art and design by hand and with the use of various software programs. Develop Perceptual Skills and Visual Arts Vocabulary: 1.1 Identify and use the principles of design to discuss, analyze, and write about visual aspects in the environment and in works of art, including their own. 1.2 Describe the principles of design as used in works of art, focusing on dominance and subordination. Analyze Art Elements and Principles of Design: 1.3 Research and analyze the work of an artist and write about the artist s distinctive style and its contribution to the meaning of the work. 1.4 Analyze and describe how the composition of a work of art is affected by the use of a particular principle of design. Impact of Media Choice: 1.5 Analyze the material used by a given artist and describe how its use influences the meaning of the work. 1.6 Compare and contrast similar styles of works of art done in electronic media with those done with materials traditionally used in the visual arts.

Unit 2: Pixels, Vectors, Sound, and Motion Pixel-based and vector-based graphics are the two primary formats used for desktop publishing, and use of programs including Adobe Photoshop (pixels) and Illustrator (vectors) is standard throughout the design industry. Audio and video software can be utilized to communicate meaningful content and express a wide variety of ideas relevant to student interests and passions. What is the purpose of a portfolio? How can I critically reflect on my personal design process? What is the best way for me to solve this design problem? How can I exemplify a Commitment to Justice through my art? Artistic processes and skills, using a variety of media to communicate meaning and intent in original works of art. How to create a digital portfolio. How to refine work based on instructor feedback & self-assessment How to express a variety of artistic concepts and issues regarding a Commitment to Justice through their compositions and work. be Skills, Processes, Materials, and Tools: 2.1 Solve a visual arts problem that involves the effective use of the elements of art and the principles of design. 2.2 Prepare a portfolio of original two- and three-dimensional works of art that reflects refined craftsmanship and technical skills. 2.3 Develop and refine skill in the manipulation of digital imagery (either still or video). 2.4 Review and refine observational drawing skills. Communication and Expression Through Original Works of Art 2.5 Create an expressive composition, focusing on dominance and subordination. 2.6 Create a two- or three-dimensional work of art that addresses a social issue.

Unit 3: Historical and Cultural Context Visual arts have played an important role in past and present cultures throughout the world. Human diversity has been displayed throughout the ages through visual arts and artists. What are the roots of graphic design as it emerged from traditional fields of art? What are the similarities and differences of art and design across the various cultures of the world? How has technology and social media changed the expression and purpose of art and design. Who are some of the greatest artists and designers past and present? A general historical and perceptual overview of the major movements in the history of graphic design. How to observe and make inferences regarding similarities and differences of art and design across a variety of cultural contexts. How technology has changed the expression of art and design. The emerging trends in social media, art, design, and the corresponding cultural implications attached to said trends. be Role and Development of the Visual Arts: 3.1 Identify similarities and differences in the purposes of art created in selected cultures. 3.2 Identify and describe the role and influence of new technologies on contemporary works of art. Diversity of the Visual Arts: 3.3 Identify and describe trends in the visual arts and discuss how the issues of time, place, and cultural influence are reflected in selected works of art. 3.4 Discuss the purposes of art in selected contemporary cultures. Derive Meaning: 4.1 Articulate how personal beliefs, cultural traditions, and current social, economic, and political contexts influence the interpretation of the meaning or message in a work of art. 4.2 Compare the ways in which the meaning of a specific work of art has been affected over time because of changes in interpretation and context. Make Informed Judgments: 4.3 Formulate and support a position regarding the aesthetic value of a specific work of art and change or defend that position after considering the views of others. 4.4 Articulate the process and rationale for refining and reworking one of their own works of art. 4.5 Employ the conventions of art criticism in writing and speaking about works of art.

Unit 4: Connections, Relationships, Applications and the Design Process Design is applied across a wide range of industries and other fields through complex strategies of marketing and brand development. Problem solving, creativity, communication, and management of time and resources are essential to become a lifelong learner and acquire necessary career skills. What is branding? How do clients and designers interact throughout the design process? How do brands and advertising campaigns differ across various types of media? (Television, newspapers, magazines, mobile devices, etc.) What careers can I explore in art and design? How to apply what they ve learned across subject areas. General information regarding careers in and related to the visual arts. How to take a client from a pitch and storyboarding session through the design process to an accepted brand marketing strategy. The skills required of professionals in various fields in art and design. be Connections and Applications: 5.1 Design an advertising campaign for a theatre or dance production held at a school, creating images that represent characters and major events in the production. 5.2 Create a work of art that communicates a cross-cultural or universal theme taken from literature or history. Visual Literacy: 5.3 Compare and contrast the ways in which different media (television, newspapers, magazines) cover the same art exhibition. Careers and Career-Related Skills: 5.4 Demonstrate an ing of the various skills of an artist, art critic, art historian, art collector, art gallery owner, and philosopher of art (aesthetician).

Unit 5: Review of Introductory Design Concepts (Multimedia 1A) Elements of art and design include: Shape, line, volume, mass, form, texture, value, space, gradients, type, etc. Principles of art and design include: Symmetrical / asymmetrical balance, contrast, harmony, unity, movement, distortion, color theory, typography, negative space, arbitrary color, scale, and expressive content How can I use appropriate vocabulary to analyze, discuss, and decipher the intent of art and design? What are the proper elements of a storyboard and how can I work to create more efficient ones thus maximizing my personal design workflow? What is the appropriate amount of open/negative space needed for a particular composition? What is typography? What is the history of symbols, language and type? How to verbalize the style, intent & meaning embedded within their design. How to express mood and emotion in their works of art. Methods of distortion and alteration of still and motion graphics. A more complete and advanced set of tools and methods used by designers. be Develop Perceptual Skills and Visual Arts Vocabulary: 1.1 Analyze and discuss complex ideas, such as distortion, color theory, arbitrary color, scale, expressive content, and real versus virtual in works of art. 1.2 Discuss a series of their original works of art, using the appropriate vocabulary of art. 1.3 Analyze their works of art as to personal direction and style. Analyze Art Elements and Principles of Design: 1.4 Research two periods of painting, sculpture, film, or other media and discuss their similarities and differences, using the language of the visual arts. 1.5 Compare how distortion is used in photography or video with how the artist uses distortion in painting or sculpture. 1.6 Describe the use of the elements of art to express mood in one or more of their works of art. Impact of Media Choice: 1.7 Select three works of art from their art portfolio and discuss the intent of the work and the use of the media. 1.8 Analyze the works of a well-known artist as to the art media selected and the effect of that selection on the artist s style.

Unit 6: Connections, Relationships, and Real-World Applications Design is applied across a wide range of industries and other fields through complex strategies of marketing and brand development. Problem solving, creativity, communication, and management of time and resources are essential to become a lifelong learner and acquire necessary career skills. How will new technology further change the definition and function of the visual arts? What is the best method of refinement when preparing portfolios for: Postsecondary application, exhibition, job applications, & personal collection? What is the deeper meaning behind the symbols and imagery of some of the most successful brands? What skills will benefit me in preparation for design and other related careers that do not exist yet? How to present a concept, pitch, design, idea, etc. professionally to a group of peers and professionals. How to utilize a wide range of skills including (but not limited to): creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and problem solving to remain relevant as a lifelong learner in current and future career paths within the design industry and beyond. How to examine a piece of art or design concept for deeper ing of the symbolism, imagery, and other embedded elements of the artist or brand being observed. How to compile and present a professional portfolio of their design work. be Connections and Applications: 5.1 Speculate on how advances in technology might change the definition and function of the visual arts. Visual Literacy: 5.2 Compare and contrast works of art, probing beyond the obvious and identifying psychological content found in the symbols and images. Careers and Career-Related Skills: 5.3 Prepare portfolios of their original works of art for a variety of purposes (e.g., review for postsecondary application, exhibition, job application, and personal collection). 5.4 Investigate and report on the essential features of modern or emerging technologies that affect or will affect visual artists and the definition of the visual arts.

Unit 7: Sound and Motion II Creative Expression Artistic processes, skills, ideas, themes, and emotions can be creatively expressed through a variety of media including, but not limited to, web and print media through use of graphic design and video editing tools. Self-directed learning enables users to empower themselves as lifelong students creating works of art and completing the design process with increasing complexity. How can I communicate with my peers and instructors within the design process to: collaborate, think critically, and solve problems? What is the best medium and method for me to express thoughts, feelings, and ideas related to my greatest passions in life? What is the most efficient way for me to self-direct my learning to increase the complexity of my projects, and ultimately, my portfolio? How will I learn the newest software programs and most recent updates to existing design applications when I leave this course? How to create innovative visual metaphors when completing the design process and creating compositions. Deeper concepts related to social media, mobile devices, and the advancement of technology. How can I provide critique of art and design in a helpful, professional manner? How does society & media influence expression and message in works of art? What the role of storytelling in art, design, and branding? Who are the greatest influences (past & present) on my personal art & design? How to convey deep ideas, passion, and themes through the use of storytelling. Methods of expression for conveying acquired knowledge of the intersection between art and design, and the diverse cultures of society and the world. How to construct a rationale for the validity of works of art that fall outside the realm of their personal conceptions of art and design. What it means to be a self-directed, lifelong learners within the design process. Role and Development of the Visual Arts: 3.1 Identify contemporary styles and discuss the diverse social, economic, and political developments reflected in the works of art examined. 3.2 Identify contemporary artists worldwide who have achieved regional, national, or international recognition and discuss ways in which their work reflects, plays a role in, and influences present-day culture. Diversity of the Visual Arts: 3.3 Investigate and discuss universal concepts expressed in works of art from diverse cultures. 3.4 Research the methods art historians use to determine the time, place, context, value, and culture that produced a given work of art.
