spaceline specifications spaceline/rod weight loading recommendations mei + picchi offers two sizes of suspension system - that is, 1.6mm stainless steel, along with 5mm stainless steel ; + also a 6mm diameter stainless steel rod suspension system. the three systems are specifically designed for visual merchandising + shopfitting installations, interior signage, commercial showroom + often restaurant + domestic applications, + are also widely used in the museum field, particularly within glass showcases. one of the best features of the suspension systems is that they may be re-adjusted or changed around at any time to suit changing display needs. a qualified builder or shopfitter must always be used for secure installation, + that person may also advise on weight + loading recommendations according to site conditions, + provide the appropriate fixings to correctly anchor the or rod. layout of the system by an architect or designer is advisable. we have been marketing these systems around australia + new zealand since 1989, + one of the most commonly asked questions is how much weight will the or rod take? in response to this there are a number of factors to consider - with the best answers involving a common sense approach to the design, installation + intentions of the display. 1. the nature + type of the fixing points into the ceiling + floor - the ceiling fixing takes the majority of the weight as the suspension system is hung under tension. rod is not installed with as much tension as, but the weight transfer into the ceiling fixing is still a major load point. mei + picchi do not supply any components to actually fix our ceiling or floor s or track into the ceiling or floor - these are to be provided by the installer, depending on site conditions. 2. RTRA trackwhen using this aluminium extruded track, it must be securely screw-fixed into position, + for heavier duty installations screws need to be positioned + anchored closer together to spread the load. 3. the type of merchandise or items to be displayed - consider the weight + bulk of items to be suspended or placed onto shelves, that is - heavy items are better on smaller shelves + not too many per bay of s or rods. 4. the / rod spacings + shelf sizes - position / rod drops according to the nature of the display - having closer drops with smaller shelves reduces the weight loading per component. we usually recommend a maximum shelf size in a or rod bay to be approximately 900mm wide x 400mm deep - but this depends on the weight to be placed onto each shelf, + how many shelves there will be per bay. If using glass for shelves, we recommend 8mm or 10mm thickness. glass must be clear float or toughened, but do not use laminated glass. some vital statistics: the breaking limit of the 1.6mm stainless steel is 280kg. the maximum sliding strain on the lead crimp at the top of the (inside the ceiling ) is 240kg. on two of the shelf s the maximum respective sliding strains are: SLS1-90kg, + SLS2-60kg; this loading is per component, per attachment. for instance, in a bay of four 1.6mm drops, one glass shelf with four SLS1 shelf s would have a maximum capacity of up to 360kg, + in theory it may be possible to have three of these shelves within the bay before any of the components failed. this, however is an extreme point + would never be either recommended or intended to be installed. it is just a point to convey weight loadings at breaking points. in reality the breaking strain of the or the sliding strain of the components will never be an issue if the floor + ceiling or track fixings are secure on site + that all grub screws within the components are tightened. common sense prevails with good design + planning on the layout, + for a qualified tradesman to ensure security of all the drops + fittings. 50
