Introduction Color Chip Charts are useful for seeing how different colors and pencil brands work with different blending techniques. When completed, it becomes a very useful tool in helping to determine colors for your artwork. You can flip open your book and see what colors might give you the results you want. Even if you do not have the complete set of colored pencils, start your chip chart anyway. You can fill in the colors you do not have when you get them. It is much easier to do it this way than doing the whole set at once. Filling in your color chip chart will also give you a lot of pencil stroke practice. Take your time working on the charts. Aim for consistent dense coverage. Dense does not mean heavy pressure. You can achieve a densely colored piece with a sharp pencil and a light & consistent touch by making sure you fill in the tooth of the paper. Blending with colored pencil is not like blending with paint. Layering colored pencil creates the optical illusion of two or more colors blending to make one. When blending (melding or fusing), you are melting the colors and binders to fill in the tooth of the paper for dense coverage either through heat friction or solvents. Odorless Mineral Spirits meld while you are working without destroying the tooth of the paper allowing you to add more layers. Burnishing is best saved for last. You are melding, or fusing, creating a completely colorsaturated and smooth piece of artwork. Additional layers are often difficult to add after burnishing because the color does not have any tooth to grip on to. For my charts, I used bristol vellum paper cut down to 8.5x11 and Prismacolor Premier White & Colourless Blender pencils because they are inexpensive. OMSs that I recommend are Gamblin Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits, Mona Lisa Odorless Paint Thinner, or Zest It Pencil Blend. Pressure Scale 0 whisper, barely there 1 weight of the pencil only 2 light pressure 3 moderate pressure 4 very firm pressure 5 as hard as you can press 4 and 5 pressure is generally too heavy unless burnishing. 2016 Carol Bond Art
Materials Needed: Binder (1 works) Plastic Sleeves (to insert your pages into) Paper 8.5x11 Scissors or paper cutter (to cut your bristol vellum down to 8.5x11) Printer Colored Pencils, white pencil, blending pencil Sharpener (sharp points are necessary) OMS of choice Instructions Column 1 Column 2 Column 3 Print the pencil set you are going to work with on your precut paper. Fill in as follows: Column 1 weight of pencil Column 2 light pressure Column 3 moderate pressure Row 1 Row 2 Row 3 Row 4 Row 5 Row 1 no blending Row 2 OMS* Row 3 white pencil Row 4 blender pencil Row 5 OMS**, white pencil, blender pencil Let dry between using the OMS and other pencils otherwise the tooth might get crushed. *If you do not wish to use OMSs, you can blend black pencil in this line with your color. Use a light touch with the black. ** If not using OMSs, you can skip over the OMS in row 5 and just use the white pencil with blender pencil on top of that. 2016 Carol Bond Art
