The CoinHawks Club What is the CoinHawks Club? The Regina Coin Club s division for young people up to age 16. Once a member reaches their 17 th birthday, they are transferred to the adult club The Regina Coin Club. Who can be a member of The CoinHawks Club? Anyone between the ages of 8 and 16 as long as they have parental permission. Non - Member guests are welcome with permission of the attending member s parent/guardian. Parents are required to provide supervision during meetings and events. What does it cost to become a member of the CoinHawks Club? There is no cost to the member until they graduate to the adult club. What is the Purpose of the CoinHawks Club? To provide young coin collectors a forum to meet, and learn about numismatics or coin collecting at times and places different than the adult Regina Coin Club. While members are welcome to attend the +17 regular Friday Night meetings, the CoinHawks meetings will usually be held on weekends, and subjects will concentrate material more suited to the age group. Meeting length will be more suitable to family events. How does the R.C.C. interact with the CoinHawks Club? The CoinHawks Club How does the R.C.C. interact with the CoinHawks Club? Adult members will assist in providing materials as well as guidance to the CoinHawks own executive. The R.C.C. will provide a Newsletter, and Web service on the club s main website www.reginacoinclub.com Will the CoinHawks Club have its own Executive? Yes, the club should establish leadership in their own age bracket, with a President, a Secretary, and committees as requirements arise. An Assistant to the adult club s Treasurer may be established should any actions be required, but for the greater part, the +17 R.C.C. club treasurer will handle any funds. Parent liaisons will be required. Will the CoinHawks be able to buy and sell coins? Yes, the R.C.C. feels strongly in establishing a network to help young numismatists grow their collections at the lowest cost possible. What will typical CoinHawk meetings consist of? Each meeting should quickly review official business and have educational time. But the most time will be spent on members talking about their own interests, looking at collectable coins, bills, and tokens, with opportunity to exchange in a format supervised by adults. Ask an expert is important. What about Security of members and their belongings? The business of exchanging, buying or selling materials must be done under guidelines and supervision to be established by the club. Parents are encouraged to participate. The CoinHawks Club is established to help collectors between the ages of 6 and 16 to learn about this fascinating hobby, and provide a forum to learn, Ask an Expert, and grow a collection through exchange, buy, sell, or barter. We will provide books, articles and presentations to help you become more knowledgeable about your collection. You can become a leader or committee member. During your membership you will have the opportunity to meet other collectors your age, and also to help you define what you want to collect, and refine your interest in that direction. About Coin Collecting Here are some examples of coin collection types you might enjoy! Living in Canada, and using money to buy goods, you probably already know about: 1 cent, 5 cent, 10 cent, 25 cent, 50 cent and, Loonies, and Toonies, but do you know about Tokens, Large Cents, Silver nickels, 20 cent pieces, Silver Dollars or Gold sovereigns? Canadian Decimal coins, and tokens of early Canada are an easy way to build a collection. Coins of Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI. The Royal Canadian Mint not only produces the coins in your pocket or wallet, but also Mints beautiful collections of coins and commemorative Non-Circulating Coins. The world is full of coins and history. Ancient coins from Roman times are easy to collect and provide centuries old history. A separate document is available. Odd and Curious Money. See separate documents. Different countries or continents provide interesting collection ideas. Coins of different metals, like Copper, Silver, Nickel, Gold, and some like our Toonie can be found around the world, where 2 types of metal are formed to make one coin. Themes like Kings, Queens, Heads of State, Flowers, Birds, Animals, Boats/Ships anything YOU like is perfectly fine. It s YOUR collection, make it what you want. About Coin Collecting Here are some Rules for good collecting habits Do not clean a coin. Most coins retain their value without cleaning, and some cleaning will lower the value through scratching the surface or other damage. Coin values are dependant on condition, toning and dirt accumulation play part of it. An exception to coin cleaning is of the Ancient coins of Roman times. Millions of buried coins have been found in modern times. They are available now still coated in mud and dirt. Very hard mud and dirt, for which cautious cleaning methods will eventually produce a 2000-year-old coin to be proud of. More information on this subject is available in the separate volume on Ancient coins. Store properly in books and materials made for coins. Common items like 2x2s ( 2 by 2 ) Coin Tubes, capsules, pages and envelopes are all available to display and protect coins. Special or valuable coins can be examined by experts and encased in a non re-closable envelope ( or flip ) or hard case to keep safe. These are provided with the condition grade and available at a cost from a variety of sources discussed later. Keep your coin collection safe. Pick a location for storage where not everyone visits regularly, or in a locked container. Make sure your parent is involved in these decisions. Be careful who you tell about your collection. Some think special coins are just money. Read as much as you can on your favorite coins, and other coins to round out knowledge. Keep and buy the best grade of each coin that you can afford. ( taken from the R.C.C. presentation on O&C Money ) Charles Opitz, the president of the International Primitive Money Society and the author of Odd & Curious Money: Descriptions and Values says this of Odd and Curious.. In summary, odd and curious money must be considered in terms different than our modern money. The intertwining of supernatural powers and a supernatural origin along with the use of bride price and blood money must change the way we see items as money. The basic characteristics are: 1. Being part of North American, Canada shares most of the continent with The United States and Mexico. American coins are a great place to start collecting, as they are common in our own pocket change, and easy to gather. They also can date back further in time than Canadian coins, but basically come in the same denominations as we use, as in pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters, as well as half dollars and dollars.
