An Angel for Spring By Tracy Meola Palette: DecoArt Americana Acrylic Paint Baby Pink #13031 Boysenberry #13029 Burnt Sienna #13063 Buttermilk #13003 Calypso Blue #13234 Flesh Tone #13078 Evergreen #13082 Kelly Green #13055 Moon Yellow #13007 Neutral Grey #13095 Raw Umber #13130 Soft Black #13155 Soft Blue #13210 Warm White #13239 Surface: Candle Cup Angel #80788 Misc. Supplies: DecoArt Acrylic Spray Sealer/Finisher Matte #70836 Tracing paper #83176 Gray Graphite paper #70141 Brushes: Papillon by the Artist s Club Liner, size 0 #20146 Shader, size 6 #20127; size 10 #20130 Highlighter Set 20173 Preparation: No special prep is required prior to painting; any slight imperfecrtions can be lightly sanded, wipe the surface with a damp cloth to remove any residual sanding dust. Painting Instructions: General Instructions: Shading is done with a wash technique unless otherwise specified. Add water to paint and brush on to base-coated surface allowing the color to be more intense where it settles into grooves. Highlighting is done with a dry-brush technique; using a comfortable size brush from the highlighter set, load the brush in paint and wipe excess off on palette. Lightly rub the brush over the area to be highlighted building the highlight slowly no globs. (In these instructions, anywhere that you see a mix with the numbers in parenthesis (2:1) it is 1

the mixing ratio - 2 parts of the first color to one part of the second color.) Paint the angel s face and hands with Flesh Tone. Paint the dress with Baby Pink. Paint the underdress, the collar and tea lite holder (or bird bath) with Moon Yellow + Warm White (1:1). Paint the hair with Soft Black. Paint the wings with Moon Yellow + Warm White (1:2). Face & Hands: Mix Flesh Tone + Burnt Sienna (1:2) and shade the face and hands, allowing the color to settle into the deep set areas of her ears, eyes, sides of nose, neck and fingers. Brush some on to where the hands go under the sleeves. Paint the lips Boysenberry. Dry-brush Boysenberry on to her cheeks for blush. Paint the eyes Warm White. Paint circles inside the eyes with Calypso Blue (the iris s should disappear under the lids or else the eyes will have a surprised appearance). Add a pupil of Soft Black in the center of the iris. Add a sparkle dot with Warm White on the left side of the pupil where it meets the iris. Use Soft Black and paint some light eyebrows above the eyes. If you like, you can add a dot of either Warm White or Boysenberry to the earlobes for earrings. Collar: Shade with Moon Yellow. Hair: Dry brush a highlight of Soft Black + Warm White (1:2) on to the hair. Add more Warm White to the mix and add more highlights if necessary. Bird Bath Tea Lite Holder: Shade with Moon Yellow in the grooves. Mix Soft Blue + Calypso (2:1) and paint a ring inside, extending a quarter of the way up the sides, for the appearance of water. Dress: Paint Soft Blue on to the front of the dress where the scene is located, allowing it to fade as it reaches the edges. (If you get too heavy with it, when it is dry, dry-brush back over the edges with Baby Pink) Mix Kelly Green + Warm White (1:1) add water to the mix and wash this on to the grassy area (from the bottom of the dress to about ¾ of the way up the scene). Wash some Calypso Blue into the area where the green meets Soft Blue sky so there isn t a definitive transition between sky and grass. Transfer the pattern. Paint the fence Raw Umber. Paint the tree Raw Umber + Warm White 2

3 (2:1). Use this mix and a liner brush to add wood grain and groove lines to the fence; vertical lines on the posts and horizontal lines on the rails. Add more Warm White to mix and add a few lighter lines. With Soft Black deepen the areas of the fence rails where they go into the posts, the post tops, where they meet the grass and add some dark grain lines with the liner. Use a liner brush and shade the tree here and there with Raw Umber, not too much keep the tree lighter than the fence. Add a few highlights to the tree with a liner brush using the tree mix + more Warm White. Paint the Watering Can with Neutral Grey. Sideload in Soft Black and float down the left side, on the spout where it meets the can and across the top. Highlight with Neutral Grey + Warm White (1:2) down the center of the can and at the top of the spout. Use the liner and pull the 2 lines across the top of the can. Mix Kelly Green + Soft Blue (1:1) and use the liner to create grass blades all over. Then add blades of grass with Kelly Green where the fence posts go into the ground, at the base of the tree trunk and in front of the Watering Can. Add a tiny bit of Soft Black to Kelly for a dark green and add more grass, weaving this in amongst the Kelly ones. Paint the little tulips with Moon Yellow. Add dots of Moon Yellow + Warm White (1:3) on the tops for highlight. Then add a smaller dot of Warm White to that highlight. The tulip leaves are Kelly Green + Moon Yellow (1:2). These are taller than grass and some should lean left and right. Add a few more after adding a touch of Soft Black to the mix. Add lighter ones with Warm White. The birds are Calypso Blue. Add a touch of Soft Black to Calypso and deepen the birds underside. Add Warm White to Calypso and paint wings. The beaks are Burnt Sienna. Add a tiny Soft Black eye. The tree foliage is dabbed on randomly with a small flat brush using Kelly Green + Moon Yellow (1:2). When this is dry dab on some blossoms with Moon Yellow + Warm White. Then add some lighter blossoms on top with Warm White. Now carefully shade the dress with washes of Boysenberry. Inside the sleeves, in the arm creases, under the collar, under the dress, in the

small of the back and along the edge of the dress just above the hem. Highlight the dress by dry-brushing Baby Pink + Warm White (1:2) on the chest, down the sleeve, on the cuffs and along the raised hem of the dress. Underdress: Paint the tulips with Baby Pink. Side-load in Boysenberry and float where the flower meets the stem. Also add this color to the inside center area of the flowers. Highlight with Warm White where the petals overlap on top. Paint the stems and leaves with Kelly Green + Moon Yellow (1:1). Add Soft Black to the mix and deepen some leaves. Wings: Paint the upper part of the wings (the smooth area) with Soft Blue. Dry-brush Soft Blue on the lower part of the wings (the feathers). While the upper part of the wings are still wet, add a little Calypso Blue to the Soft Blue and deepen the very top area of the wings. When dry, dry-brush some Moon Yellow + Warm White mix into the centers of the upper wings. Going back and forth with these colors will help to tie all the colors in the project together. Finishing: Sign your painting on the bottom or on the back. Allow to dry completely. Finish with several light coats of Decoart Acrylic Spray Sealer/Finisher Matte. 4
