Railway Group Standards Date July 1996 Page 6 of 40 Withdrawn Document Lineside Signs 1 Purpose 2 Scope 3 Definitions 4 General Principles Part B To define the signs conveying information to traincrew to ensure the safe working of trains. This standard sets out the principles for the use of lineside signs applicable to train working. Each sign is defined in the standard in terms of appearance, information conveyed, colours and where appropriate, the relationship with other infrastructure. Signs for the safety of staff on or near the line and for public information, are included when they may be associated with the working of trains. Readable The person intended to read the sign is able to interpret all the information displayed by text, shape, colour or symbols. A sign shall only be considered readable at a given point when viewed by persons meeting the eyesight requirements of section 4.2. The equipment approval process shall include confirmation of readability by a representative sample of such persons. Identifiable The person intended to read the sign is able to see the whole of the sign, identify the type and purpose of the sign and, having an adequate level of route knowledge, read sufficient of the information displayed to interpret the meaning of the sign. Visible The person intended to read the sign is able to see the whole of the sign. 4.1 Objective Signs which are required to be read and understood by a driver of a moving train shall generally be visible for at least 4 seconds and readable or identifiable from any route approaching the sign from which it is intended to be read. The driver shall have sufficient time to understand the information on the sign and also sufficient time to understand any other information in the vicinity. The Infrastructure Controller shall ensure that the design, construction and approval of lineside signs meets the objective of this standard. 4.2 Requirements shall take account of site conditions including the requirements of GC/RT5203. Where stated for specific types of sign, positioning shall also be subject to the requirements of GK/RT0037. of signs relative to signals shall ensure that conflicting or confusing information is not displayed. 6 R A I L T R A C K

Railway Group Standard Lineside Signs Date July 1996 Page 7 of 40 Signs shall be securely positioned to minimise damage or defacement whilst obtaining best sighting and to avoid being obscured by persons working on or near the line. They shall be positioned where possible to the left of the line to which they apply. Information regarding the application of signs may also appear in other standards. Fixing arrangement shall not degrade the information displayed. Signs defined in this standard are intended to be read by drivers meeting the eyesight requirements of Group Standard GO/RT 3251. Approval tests shall consider the likelihood of degradation of a sign when in service. Unless otherwise stated in this standard, the front of signs shall be retro reflective and/or illuminated during the hours of darkness. With the exception of black, reflective performance shall be no worse than that associated with Class 1 retro reflective material (as defined in BS 873 Part 6). Signs shall be as depicted in this standard and colours shall conform to GK/RT0005 and wherever possible be reflective. The back of signs shall be grey. The use of signs not included in this standard, or a sign with differing text shall be kept to a minimum. Signs for new or localised applications shall be approved by the Infrastructure Controller, who shall then ensure that the information to be conveyed is published in the appropriate Weekly Operating Notices and/or Periodical Operating Notices and subsequently in the Sectional Appendices. All such signs shall conform fully with GK/RT0005 in respect of the use of colours. Additionally, the purpose of the sign shall be reinforced by use of the following shapes, either for the sign itself or as a symbol contained within a rectangular sign: a circular sign or symbol shall normally be used to denote an instruction; alternatively, a red border shall be used as detailed in section 5.3.1; a triangular sign or symbol shall denote a warning (i.e. a hazard or an advance indication of an instruction beyond); a rectangular sign or symbol shall be used for the display of information. The information content of local signs shall be kept to a minimum to ensure that the objective of this standard (see section 4.1) is achieved. When infrastructure alterations are carried out obsolete signs shall not be perpetuated. The Infrastructure Controller shall consider the replacement of obsolete signs whenever suitable opportunities arise, for example resignalling or an alteration to a layout. The Infrastructure Controller shall ensure that signs are of a suitable size and construction to meet the requirements of this standard, taking into account the need for consistency and the avoidance of confusion to traincrew. The Infrastructure Controller shall ensure that the positioning of signs is documented and that the signs are inspected to confirm adequate cleanliness, visibility and readability.
