Terabeam/HXI was founded as Harmonix Corporation in 1992. The company was a pioneer in the development of 60 GHz, high data rate communication links between buildings where connection to fiber was not readily available or was too expensive to be considered. In October 2000, Harmonix became the first company to obtain certification for a radio product under the FCC regulations for the 57-64 GHz band. Later, the company also became the first to offer a Gigabit data rate radio at 60 GHz. A complementary millimeter wave Components and Subsystems business, servicing government contractors, subcontractors, government entities and educational institutions, became a natural extension of the radio business, as the technology already existed within the company. The HXI brand name (short for Harmonix) was established around this time and was used for both businesses. In 2002, Harmonix was acquired for its 60 GHz radio capability by Terabeam Corporation of Redmond, Washington, a leading manufacturer of Free Space Optics (FSO) data communications equipment. In 2003, Terabeam added resources to market the millimeter wave Components & Subsystems capability worldwide under the Terabeam/HXI name. Also in that year, production began on a program requiring 35 GHz transceivers for a UAV automatic landing system. Revenue from the components group began to overtake revenue from the radio business in late 2003. Terabeam, in addition to acquiring Harmonix, also acquired another millimeter wave radio company, Telaxis, in 2003. The assets of Telaxis, including extensive test equipment and a compact antenna range usable to over 100 GHz, were merged into the Terabeam/HXI organization in 2004. The combined assets of the two companies, as well as equipment from the Redmond facility, were integrated into a new facility in Haverhill, MA in late 2005. Also in 2005, 94 GHz subsystems were developed for military and medical research applications, reconfirming Terabeam/HXI s role as a major player in the millimeter wave component and subsystem market. Radio development still continues and delivery of the company s first Gigabit radios for E-Band (71-76 GHz and 81-86 GHz) took place in 2006. Another acquisition, Proxim Wireless in San Jose, CA, serves as the headquarters for Terabeam and also provides administrative services to Terabeam/HXI. In addition, Terabeam/HXI s millimeter wave radios are sold through Proxim s extensive network of direct sales offices, distributors and resellers. Terabeam, Inc. is now a public company and is traded on the NASDAQ as TRBM. Custom Products Repair/Refurbishment Services Custom Products Terabeam/HXI engineers have extensive design experience in components and subsystems for radar and communications systems. Among the products developed are 35 and 94 GHz landing system transceivers, 35 and 94 GHz missile seekers, 77 GHz automotive radar front ends, 18 to 38 GHz point-to-point radio front ends, a complete 60 GHz radio (GigaLink), radiometers, MilSATCOM upconverters and test sets, ELINT receivers, weather radar components and subsystems to assist in medical research.. 6-Way Power Combiner for Q-Band 94 GHz FMCW Transceiver Repair/Refurbishment Services The Terabeam/HXI engineering team has expertise in more mature, and sometimes nearly lost, technology. Waveguide mixers, cavity Gunn oscillators, varactor multipliers, finline PIN switches and PIN attenuators and ferrite devices all still have a place in the market where fast prototyping and high performance are required. Many older military systems still in use today employ these technologies. With military budgets for the deployment of new systems currently at a low level, the government has opted to maintain existing systems beyond their originally intended lifetimes. This created the need for expanded repair/refurbishment facilities in order to service the wide variety of systems and system components still operating in the field. Terabeam/HXI offers repair and refurbishment services for a wide variety of legacy, obsolete and competitors microwave and millimeter wave components used in military radar and communications equipment. We have serviced oscillators, frequency multipliers and mixers and our list is continuing to grow. Combined with the services of BTP Systems of Ludlow, MA, we can repair and overhaul entire systems.
Engineering Capabilities Although we maintain a large standard product listing in our catalog, we primarily supply variations of these products, as well as custom-designed integrated subsystems. We will continue to draw from our extensive circuit library and catalog of standard components to develop new application-specific integrated products for military, industrial and commercial customers worldwide. The Terabeam/HXI engineering team is staffed by former employees of Massachusetts millimeter wave (MMW) component companies and government contractors. These senior engineers average 25 years of experience, specifically in MMW technology and products. When totally new designs are necessary, the engineers have ample CAD software packages available to assist them. ANSOFT Designer is primarily used for microwave and MMW circuit design, while AutoCAD and SolidWorks are the standard mechanical design packages used. MMICs up to 100 GHz are used extensively throughout many of our standard products and custom subassemblies. In the case of custom subassemblies, the MMICs are integrated with microstrip circuit elements such as mixers, filters and couplers to complete the MMW portions of the subassemblies. Why Terabeam? 25+ years average millimeter wave experience within engineering staff. Fast prototyping using standard single function modules. Optimum subsystem configuration for production using state-of-the-art integration methods. Small company speed and agility. Low overhead allows low cost development and manufacturing.
