SCOPE AND CONTENT The Eugene S. Wierbach Papers, containing approximately 100 items, span the period 1939-1945, although it is largely concentrated in the years 1944-1945. The collection consists of clippings, military records, newspapers, photographs, printed materials, scrapbooks, writings, and several miscellaneous items pertaining to Technical Sergeant Eugene S. Wierbach and his service in the Headquarters Company of the 48 th Tank Battalion. Military newspapers occupy a valuable part of the collection. Besides the divisional (Blue Diamond) newspaper, there are several issues of the popular Yank, a weekly for the military in World War II. The few issues of the Turret Topics are an important source of material for army maneuvers which occurred in middle Tennessee in late 1943 and early 1944. While stationed at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas and later at Camp Campbell, Kentucky, Private Wierbach was the reporter for Company F, 14 th Armored Division. In that capacity, he contributed several articles which appear in the Division newspaper, Armored News (see box 2, folder 1) and the Turret Topics (see box 1, folder 14). Other literary contributions by Wierbach may be found in the Container List under the heading Writings. Memorabilia include picture postcards of Camp Campbell, Kentucky. Military records include a map of Camp Campbell, a memorandum on Psychological Warfare, and soldier passes. Eight scrapbooks consist of newspaper clippings, cartoons and maps relating to World War II. Also included are five pages of clippings dealing with the Confederacy, seven pages of poems from the early 1900s, and miscellaneous articles of personal interest.
