Appliqué Quilted Christmas Tree Wall Hanging By Heart N Sole Materials: Background fabric - 1½ yard Tree fabric - ½ yard Tree skirt fabric - scraps Border fabric - ½ yard Lining fabric -1½ yard Back fabric - 1 yard Low loft batting Velcro (green, black, or clear coins ) Thread: rayon or polyester embroidery, and serger or dual-purpose was used for quilting Notes, tips and ramblings: Stabilizer was not used for this quilt, instead a white percale sheet (from Walmart) was used (lining fabric). Most of the time, the background fabric is used all by itself. If using a striped fabric for the background, place each piece in the hoop the same way. Use your slowest setting to stitch side seams (in the hoop) together. When stitching side seams, use a thread color that will best match the pieces being joined. All the in the hoop quilting was done using serger thread. You can trim each square after it is completed or wait and do the whole row. About Velcro : After trying different techniques, it was decided that dime-size circles placed over the guides on the quilt worked the best. These coins can be purchased or you can cut your own. Rayon thread will probably shred. It isn t necessary to have the placement perfect, as long as the Velcro is secure. Green or black Velcro will be less obvious than white. If white is all you can find, it can be colored with a Sharpie. In retrospect, it would probably be better to have the soft part of the Velcro on the tree and the loop part on the ornaments maybe next time. Print the quilt chart and keep it handy when stitching the quilt. Some of the pieces are very similar and it is easy to get lost. Cut (or tear) long strips of your background and lining fabrics (just wide enough to hold securely in your hoop) and cut your 4 squares of batting ahead of time. Row 8: Use designs B3, Q1, T21, T22, T23, Q1, and B4. To complete your quilt: Trim seams to ½. Press all seams open. Sew rows together (check the chart to see how it goes together). Press again. Place your quilt on a large flat surface. Cut a piece of backing fabric 2 larger (on all sides) than the quilt top. If you want, you can add another layer of batting. Cut the batting to the size of the quilt top. Place the backing fabric (wrong side up), add batting (if desired), add quilt top (right side up). Pin the layers together. If you want, you can stitch around the tree. There are many ways to complete a quilt. This is my favorite: Trim the backing fabric on each edge so that it is 1½ to 2 larger than the quilt top. Fold the backing fabric over the quilt top, pin in place. Form mitered corners. Use a machine blanket stitch or zigzag stitch where the backing was folded over the quilt.
