1. FCC and IC Compliance Statements 1.1 FCC Part 15 Class A This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: This device may not cause harmful interference. This device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation. Note: This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference when the equipment is operated in a commercial environment. This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio frequency energy, and if it is not installed and used in accordance with the instruction manual, it may cause harmful interference to radio communications. Operation of this equipment in a residential area is likely to cause harmful interference, in which case the user will be required to correct the interference at his own expense. Modifications: Any modifications made to this device that are not approved by VGI Solutions may void the authority granted to the user by the FCC to operate this equipment. 1.2 IC ICES-003 Class A Notice - Avis NMB-003 Classe A This Class A digital apparatus complies with Canadian ICES-003. Cet appareil numérique de la classe A est conforme à la norme NMB-003 du Canada. InstallationGuide 3

3. AFDD Unit Physical Installation 3.1 Standard Installation The AFDD box must be installed inside the vehicle, in a place not directly exposed to the sun. It must be securely fixed to avoid injury in case of vehicle sudden stop. Because the AFDD contains a WiFI antenna, its location inside the vehicle may have an effect on the efficiency of the communication with the WiFi hotspot. System connectors are located on both faces of the AFDD unit. The position of each connector, LED and slot are clearly indicated. Face 1 RF IN...(TNC) 12 VDC *...(5 pin) USB...(USB b) GPS...(SMA) Face 2 WIFI ANTENNA...(SMA) STATUS LED...(3 colors) SIM CARD...(SIM slot) CELLULAR ANTENNA...(Reverse SMA) * 12 VDC connector is also used for connecting to vehicle speed and backup sensors when the dead reckoning option is installed. 3.2 Dead Reckoning Installation AFDD units with the dead reckoning option are equiped with an electronic direction sensor. It is therefore essential that the unit be mounted horizontally. The unit should be firmly fixed to the vehicle in order to properly sense the changes of direction of the vehicle. InstallationGuide 5

4. Antennas Installation The AFDD unit uses 2 external antennas. Both antennas must be properly installed in order to optimized the operation. Antennas are magnet mounted and must be placed on the rooftop of the vehicle. 4.1 RF Leakage Detection Antenna RF leakage detection antenna must be placed as clear as possible of large metal obstacles. 4.2 GPS Patch Antenna The GPS antenna must be placed in order to maximize sky visibility. The GPS antenna must have full view of the sky ensuring a direct line-of-sight with as many visible satellites as possible. AFDD (Autonomous Fault Detection Device) 6

5. Electrical Installation The AFDD use two connexions to the power, a direct connexion to the battery (12 VDC) and a connexion to the accessory circuit (switched 12VDC). This dual power connexion allows the AFDD to complete its operations when the vehicle is shut down. After all recording and data transfer are completed, the AFDD shuts itself off. Only AFDD units equiped with the dead reckoning option (inertial GPS enhancement) will required the green and the brown wires to be connected. 5.1 Power Connections Black (Ground) To vehicule ground (metal body). Red (Unswitched 12 VDC) To 12 VDC electric terminal not controlled by ignition switch. A 2 amp. fuse is used to protect the unit. White (Switched 12 VDC) To 12 VDC electric terminal controlled by ignition switch. Make sure not to use an intermittent accessory power like heating system or lights. CAUTION Do not disconnect or modify vehicle security systems as airbags or seatbelts. Security systems wires use yellow sleeves and yellow connectors. Accidental triggering of these systems may cause severe injuries. 5.2 Dead Reckoning Connections The green and brown wires are used only with dead reckoning option. Green (Speed Signal) To vehicle speed detection circuit lead coming out of the vehicle injection computer. Brown (Reverse Signal) To vehicle backup light lead. NOTE The position of the speed detection circuit and the position of the reverse signal vary depending on the vehicle model. For details, consult your authorized dealer or an installation professional. InstallationGuide 7

CAUTION Never install this product in places where, or in a manner that it could injure the driver or passengers if the vehicle stops suddenly. Never install this product in places where, or in a manner that it may interfere with the driver s operation of the vehicle, such as on the floor in front of the driver s seat, or close to the steering wheel or shift lever. Make sure there is nothing behind the dashboard or paneling when drilling holes in them. Be careful not to damage fuel lines, brake lines, electronic components, communication wires or power cables. When using screws, do not allow them to come into contact with any electrical lead. Vibration may damage wires or insulation, leading to a short circuit or other damage to the vehicle. To ensure proper installation, use the supplied parts in the manner specified. If any parts other than the upplied ones are used, they may damage internal parts of this product or they may work loose and the product may become detached. It is extremely dangerous to allow the cables to become wound around the steering column or shift lever. Be sure to install this product, its cables, and wiring away in such a way that they will not obstruct or inder driving. Make sure that leads cannot get caught in a door or the sliding mechanism of a seat, resulting in a short circuit. Please confirm the proper function of your vehicle s other equipment following installation of the navigation system. Do not install this system where it may (i) obstruct the driver s vision, (ii) impair the performance of any of the vehicle s operating systems or safety features, including airbags, hazard lamp buttons or (iii) impair the driver s ability to safely operate the vehicle. Never install the system in front of or next to the place in the dash, door, or pillar from which one of your vehicle s airbags would deploy. Please refer to your vehicle s owner s manual for reference to the deployment area of the frontal airbags. Do not install the system in a place where it will impair the performance of any of the vehicle s perating systems, including airbags and headrests. AFDD (Autonomous Fault Detection Device) 8

6. Operation 6.1 Startup When the vehicle starts, the AFDD is turns on automatically. At startup, the LED lights orange shortly, shuts down and turns back to orange for about 10 seconds (a special startup sequence takes place after a firmware update). After the startup delay, the LED blinks red until the GPS signal is detected (typically about 40 seconds depending on the signal quality). The LED turns green when the GPS signal is detected.the AFDD blinks 2 times green when a leak is recorded. 6.2 Communication Modems The LED blinks orange while the AFDD is connected to a modem (Wifi or GPRS). When a valid connection is made, the AFDD downloads some configuration information from the FTP server and uploads the data recorded previously. The LED blinks green 3 times after a file reception and 2 times after a file transmission. WiFi The AFDD attempts to connect to the properly configured WiFi(b/g) access point periodically. When the vehicle shuts down nearby an access point, the AFDD completes the file transfer before closing. GPRS (optional) When equiped with a GPRS modem, the AFDD uses it to transfer its files at a specified interval. At shutdown, the AFDD verifies if it can communicate via the Wifi access point first and in case of failure, the file transfer takes place over the GPRS connection. 6.3 USB Operation Whenever a USB cable is connected into the AFDD, the LED lights red. No recording takes place in this mode. 6.4 Shutdown Three slow red blinks of the LED indicate that the AFDD has closed properly. 6.5 Error detection codes If the LED keeps blinking 2 times red, the radio isn t working properly. If the LED keeps blinking red at regular intervals, there s a problem with the GPS antenna. If the LED keeps blinking from red to green, a firmware update encountered a serious error.
