The problem is cost. Cadaveric training is expensive and not always practical. Fundamental Surgery is a software platform that takes advantage of readily available virtual reality software combined with cutting edge haptics (the sense of touch) to create a simulation system that can be used on any modern PC set up, even a laptop*. The result is a simulation system that requires a hardware investment of as little as $4,000 - $10,000 and a simple ongoing licence fee. The system launches with simulations focused on the Orthopedic specialism but will quickly move into areas including Laparoscopic, General Surgery, Cardiac Surgery and Otolaryngology (ENT). *minimum graphics card and memory requirement.

A TRULY IMMERSIVE SIMULATION EXPERIENCE HIGH DEFINITION VIRTUAL REALITY Fundamental Surgery uses the latest high definition graphics and virtual reality techniques, combined with the sense of touch to deliver a feel real experience. UNIQUE SENSE OF TOUCH Each tissue texture and physical property has been mapped into the virtual space using our haptic intelligence interface to provide the user with a unique learning experience. The user (surgeon) can manipulate and feel the appropriate patient anatomy and tissue as they navigate the procedure, select instruments as you would in the real environment and then feel the textures and performance of each tool. REAL-TIME ASSESSMENT & FEEDBACK Users each have their own unique log in and throughout each of the simulations their performance is assessed and measured within the system providing realtime feedback on instrument use, procedural accuracy and patient impact. This information is stored and can be provided both to the user and the admin control. Furthermore, changes in competency can be tracked allowing both the user and admin to monitor progression and areas needing further refinement. BRANCHED OUTCOMES TRIALLING SCENARIOS There are many surgical and patient scenarios that only present themselves rarely however, having the experience of these events and how to manage them leads to better patient outcomes. Fundamental Surgery can help. Within each of the simulations we are creating branched outcomes* (think of them like the surgical equivalent of a bird strike in a pilot s flight simulator) allowing the user to be presented with differing situations within the same procedural learning experience. This might, for example, be an unexpected bleed, unusual or abnormal anatomy, or a change in the patient condition, all of which can be run and rerun numerous times. Branching can be selected or randomised to increase the real-life experience. *Branched outcomes available in future releases.

PLUG AND PLAY HARDWARE SOLUTIONS SOFTWARE SIMPLY DELIVERED You may already have most of the hardware you need to run the Fundamental Surgery system. Fundamental Surgery is a software solution which requires a licence key. Licences are granted on a per-installation basis (one licence per machine installed) not a per user basis. This means that if you only have one simulation machine all your users can access the same master account and enjoy the benefits of this new surgical training. If you need more simultaneous users then simply activate the appropriate number of licences for your department s needs. PC you ll need a powerful PC with a Nvidia GTX1080 (or similar) graphics card. VR headset for your VR headset the choice is yours, Microsoft Mixed Reality, Oculus Rift or HTC Vive. Haptic device you ll need two Geomagic haptic devices which are available through a simple online purchase.
