The Pretoria Chess Club About the Tournament The Pretoria Chess Club is proud to host the Piet Robbertse Chess Tournament for 2018. Piet Robbertse was an active player in the club in the 1960s and 1970s. He won the prestigious club championship in 1967, 1969, 1972 and 1973. More importantly perhaps, is that Piet actively promoted chess, growing the number of people that are interested in playing and sponsoring chess. He successfully sought sponsorships for tournaments and events, which was as difficult then as it is now. We are proud to host this tournament in honour of his memory and his contributions to the chess community. About the Club The Pretoria Chess Club is one of the oldest chess clubs in South Africa, having originated in 1889. A lot of chess has been played in the more than 100 years the club has existed and many chess champions have been played for the club. Legends in the chess community, like Piet Kroon and Albert Ponelis has a long and proud history playing for the club. We are an active club and one of the strongest clubs in Gauteng. Our club activities include our annual club championship, participation in the Gauteng Chess League, various classic and blitz tournaments throughout the year, as well as open evenings with guest lectures and presentations. We have some of the strongest players in Tshwane and Gauteng, with quite a few players rated over 2000. Whether you are a serious player that would like to improve, or a casual player that enjoys a night of good chess, the Pretoria Chess Club is where you will find it. Join us in 2018! Our fees for 2018 are R350 for adults and R150 for scholars, students and pensioners. Pretoria club members also receive a R50 discount on their entry fees for the Piet Robbertse tournament - please take us up on the offer! This year, we will be introducing a development program at the club. The development program is aimed at scholars and inexperienced players that would like to improve their chess. We are very much looking forward to meet new people and help them in their chess journey. For more information about the club, please visit our website at www.pretoriachessclub.co.za. Chess Regards, Fred Senekal (Chairman, Pretoria Chess Club)
