INTRODUCTION Congratulations on purchasing an Ozito Thicknesser. We aim to provide quality tools at an affordable price. We hope you will enjoy using this tool for many years. Your Thicknesser OZT1500WA has been designed for cleaning up and re-sizing twisted, sawn and recycled timber. It is intended for DIY use only. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS! Warning! When using mains-powered tools, basic safety precautions, including the following, should always be followed to reduce risk of fire, electric shock, personal injury and material damage. Read the whole manual carefully and make sure you know how to switch the tool off, in an emergency, before operating the tool. Save these instructions and other documents supplied with this machine for future reference. ELECTRICAL SAFETY The electric motor has been designed for 230V and 240V only. Always check that the power supply corresponds to the voltage on the rating plate. Note: The supply of 230V and 240V on Ozito tools are interchangeable for Australia and New Zealand. Using an Extension Lead Always use an approved extension lead suitable for the power input of this tool. Before use, inspect the extension lead for signs of damage, wear and ageing. Replace the extension lead if damaged or defective. When using an extension lead on a reel, always unwind the lead completely. Use of an extension lead not suitable for the power input of the tool or which is damaged or defective may result in a risk of fire and electric shock It is recommended that the extension lead is a maximum of 25m in length. Do Not use multiple extension leads.. 4

GENERAL SAFETY RULES! Warning! Read all instructions, Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury. The term Power Tool in all of the warnings listed below refers to your mains operated (corded) power tool or battery operated (cordless) power tool. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS 1) WORK AREA a) Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered and dark areas invite accidents. b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes. c) Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control. 2) ELECTRICAL SAFETY a) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock. b) Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded. c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock. d) Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock. e) Replacement of the supply cord. If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by an electrician or a power tool repairer. f) Replacement cord instructions for type Y attachment: Method of attachment of the supply cord such that any replacement is intended to be made by the manufacturer, its service agent or similar qualified person. g) When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock. h) Have your tool repaired by an electrician or a power tool repairer. This power tool complies with relevant safety requirements. To avoid danger, electrical appliances must only be repaired by qualified personnel using original spare parts; otherwise this may result in considerable danger to the user. 3) PERSONAL SAFETY a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury. b) Use safety equipment. Always wear eye protection. Safety equipment such as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries. 5

GENERAL SAFETY RULES (cont.) c) Avoid accidental starting. Ensure the switch is in the off position before plugging in. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or plugging in power tools that have the switch on invites accidents. d) Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury. e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations. f) Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts. g) If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of these devices can reduce dust related hazards. 4) POWER TOOL USE AND CARE a) Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed. b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that can not be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired. c) Disconnect the plug from the power source before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally. d) Store idle power tools, unplugged & out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users. e) Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tools operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools. f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control. g) Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc., in accordance with these instructions and in the manner intended for the particular type of power tool, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from intended could result in a hazardous situation. 5) SERVICE a) Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained. 6

ADDITIONAL SAFETY RULES FOR THICKNESSERS This appliance is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety. Young children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the appliance. Always wear eye and hearing protection when operating this machine. Always wear a breathing mask to reduce the risk of inhalation of harmful dust. Prior to operation, ensure that all guards are in place. Any parts, if damaged, must be repaired properly or replaced. Check and ensure that all fastening screws and bolts are securely tightened prior to starting the machine. Set up the machine on solid, stable surface so that the table is horizontal and the machine cannot tip over. Never work with pieces which are too big or too small for the machine's capacity. Before planing, examine the work piece for metal objects and stones and remove them if necessary. Do not force the work piece through the machine. Allow the feeding rollers to guide the work piece through the planer thicknesser. When planing thin pieces of timber, suitable devices must be used to ensure that these small pieces are properly positioned and guided. Keep the feed rollers free of wood chips and sawdust. If the movement becomes clogged, kickback can occur. The anti-kickback device of the planer must be checked regularly to ensure that it remains in proper working condition. All pawls of this device must move freely and must drop down by their own weight when lifted. The point of these pawls must be kept sharp. Do not begin planing until the cutter head has reached full speed. When planning, take up a working position so that you are always on one side of the machine away from the area directly in front of or behind the cutter head. Always keep your hands well away from the cutter head or the chip ejection area while the machine is running. Never place hands near the cutter head unless the machine is switched off and disconnected from the power supply. A uniform feed rate when planing increases the life of the blades and reduces the risk of accidents. The blades must be sharpened or replaced in good time as blunt blades do not only increase the risk of kickback, but also impose an unnecessary load on the motor. Check that the blades are fitted correctly before commencing operation. 7

ADDITIONAL SAFETY RULES FOR THICKNESSERS (cont.) Always stop the motor and disconnect from power source before performing any adjustments or maintenance. The sawdust created by planing makes it difficult to see as clearly as necessary and can impair the operator's health in certain circumstances. If not working outdoors or on well ventilated premises, the machine must be connected with the dust extraction port to an extractor unit, such as a small portable dust extractor. When operating for a long period, the air velocity must be at least 20 m/s (65.6 ft/sec.) The sound pressure level at the workplace generally exceeds 85 db(a). Users should therefore wear ear protectors. When operating the machine outdoors, use of an earth-leakage circuit-breaker is recommended. Any work on the electric components of the machine must be carried out only by a qualified electrician. Only original spare parts and accessories must be used. Otherwise the manufacturer does not offer any warranty and does not accept any liability. Regular cleaning of the machine is an important safety factor. Before beginning this task, disconnect the power. Never use the machine without the appropriate guard in place and correctly adjusted; Do not use knives which are blunt as this increases the danger of kickback. For planers: Any portion of the cutter block not being used for planing shall be guarded; When planing short workpieces a push-stick should be used; When planing narrow workpieces additional measures, such as the use of horizontal pressure devices and spring loaded guards, may be necessary to ensure safe working; The planing function should not be used to cut rebate, recess, tenon or mould. For thicknessers: Regularly inspect the anti-kickback finger assembly and the feed mechanism to ensure their effectiveness. Tools equipped with chip collection and extractor hoods shall be connected to the dust-and-chip-collecting device. 8

ASSEMBLY Unpacking The tool weighs 32kg. Ensure that the tool is lifted with the help of another person. Open carton and remove top packing material. Lift tool from the carton and place it on a stable surface. Unwrap cord from cord storage (Fig. 1) under the out-feed table (7). Lower in-feed and out-feed tables (9 & 7). 7 Remove packing from between cutter head (18) and main table (8). Remove protective film from main table (8). Fig. 1 Bench Mounting The 4 mounting holes (19) on each corner of the base of the machine are provided to facilitate bench mounting (mounting bolts not supplied). Height Adjustment Handle Assemble height adjustment handle (2) prior to operation. To assemble, remove screw cover at the end of the height adjustment handle (2). Align with post protruding from the top of housing frame (12). Secure with screw and washer to the post with allen key (20) supplied located under the in-feed table (9). 20 9 Dust Extraction Fit a 50mm diameter hose to dust chute (17). Alternatively, fit the dust adaptor (21) to the dust chute (17). This will enable you to fit a 100mm diameter hose for dust extraction. OPERATION On/Off Switch To turn the machine on, lift the switch cover (14) and push the green button on/off switch (15). Allow the motor to reach maximum speed prior to inserting the work piece. To turn the machine off, push the switch cover (14). Allow the machine to come to a complete stop. 9

OPERATION (cont.) Overload Protection This machine is fitted with overload protection. Should the motor be under excessive load during operation, the overload protection switch (16) will be activated. When this occurs, push the switch cover (14) and the turn off the power supply. Allow the machine to cool down for several minutes. Switch the power back on at the power supply and push the overload switch (16). To turn the machine on, lift the switch cover (14) and push the green button of the on/off switch (15). Continue planing and be aware of the load you are placing on the motor. It may be necessary to reduce the cutting depth of cut per pass for the work piece, to reduce the load. Depth of Cut Adjustment The depth of cut is indicated by the depth scale (6). The depth scale (6) indicates the distance between the main table (8) and the cutter head (18). The depth of cut is adjusted up or down by rotating the depth adjustment handle (2). Rotate anti-clockwise to increase the depth of cut. Rotate clockwise to decrease the depth of cut. One complete rotation of the depth adjustment handle (2) will increase or decrease the depth of cut by 2mm. Always start operation by making an initial cut of 0.5mm. Increase depth of cut gradually to get a smooth finish. Do not attempt to plane timber less than 5mm thick. Do not attempt to plane timber which is more than 152 thick. Do not attempt to plane timber which is less than 130mm in length. Anti-kickback Fingers Anti-kickback fingers (13) prevent the work piece being propelled back to the in-feed table (9) during operation. Avoiding kickback: Always hold the work piece firmly with both hands and ensure your body is positioned to the side of the machine 13 and not directly behind or in front of the work piece. Do not plane wet or warped timber. Ensure the work piece is free from nails or stones. Remove any loose knots in the work piece prior to planing. Use even, steady pressure when making a pass. Never force the work piece. 10

OPERATION (cont.) Snipe Snipe occurs when a work piece is tilted up or down when it is fed into or out of the Thicknesser. It appears as gouges near the ends of the work piece. Ways to avoid snipe: (1) Use properly adjusted roller stands at the in-feed and out-feed tables (7 & 9). (2) Mount the machine in a recess in a bench top with the in-feed table (9) and outfeed table (7) level with the bench. Removing Blades! Warning! Prior to adjustment, ensure you switch the machine off and disconnect in from the power supply. Blades need to be reversed or changed when they plane unevenly, roughly or score the timber. Adjust the cutter head assembly (18) to its maximum height by turning the height adjustment handle (2) clockwise. Remove the dust chute (17) by removing 4 bolts (A) as shown in Fig. 2 Turn the cutter head (18) carefully to access the blade assembly as shown in Fig 3. A For the following refer to Fig. 3. Ensure blades are properly secured to the cutter head. If not properly secured, there is the potential of personal serious injury and/or damage should they become loose during operation. MAINTENANCE! CAUTION: Prior to doing any maintenance work always disconnect from the power supply. 1. Machine The Ozito Thicknesser OZT1500WA is designed with a low maintenance requirement. The bearings are lubricated for life. After approximately 10 hours of operation we recommend to lubrication of the following parts: Bearings of the feed-in and feed-out rollers. Bearings of pulley and gear wheel of the belt. Treat threaded spindles for the height adjustment of the thicknessing table with dry lubrication only. The table surface and rollers should always be kept clean of resin. Clean away any sawdust that has accumulated on the anti-kickback fingers. In order to prevent the motor from overheating. Regularly check that no sawdust has accumulated on the ventilation apertures of the motor. After a prolonged period of operation, users are recommended to have the machine serviced by an electrician or a power tool repairer. 2. Cutter head assembly The cutter head (18), blade lock bar Fig.3(c) and the blades Fig.3(b) used on the machine must be cleaned of resin regularly as a clean tool improves the cutting quality. This can be done by soaking the clamping devices, blade lock bar Fig.3(c) and the blades Fig.3(b) for 24 hours in paraffin, white spirit or commercially available resin remover. 3. Replace the carbon brushes Regularly check the carbon brushes (3) and replace them when they are shorter than about 5mm. Replace the carbon brushes as a pair. Keep the carbon brushes clean, allowing them to move freely in the brush holders. 12
