Overview of the Ham Radio Around 180 exhibitors expected at the international amateur radio exhibition from July 1 to 3 in Friedrichshafen Motto for 2018: Radio Scouting Activities to foster the next generation Off to the adventure of amateur radio! Ham Radio puts scouts in the spotlight Friedrichshafen - Face to face with amateur radio enthusiasts: The 43rd edition of the Ham Radio offers friends of amateur radio from around the world the ideal platform to meet, get to know each other, share experiences and make purchases. This year s international amateur radio exhibition takes place from June 1 to 3, 2018, at the fairgrounds in Friedrichshafen under the motto Radio Scouting - The Adventure of Youth Amateur Radio. At the show, about 180 exhibitors from 30 countries will present their products, trends and innovations related to radio, as well as the associated technology and equipment. The German Amateur Radio Club (DARC) will welcome visitors to the 69th Lake Constance Conference, featuring a large number of presentations and lectures, the Software Defined Radio Academy, and many more activities. The Ham Radio is Europe s most important amateur radio exhibition and stands out for the range of very high quality products on offer combined with very diverse supporting program, which we organize in cooperation with the DARC. It is about addressing the latest issues and at the same time setting exciting accents, as we see this year, with the motto Radio Scouting, says Messe Friedrichshafen CEO Klaus Wellmann. The 43rd edition of the show will offer a wide spectrum of technology, electronics, accessory and equipment, ranging from surveying devices, antennas and electronic devices to hardware and software everything a ham enthusiast s heart desires. Well known international exhibitors like Hilberling, Icom, JVCKenwood and Yaesu will present their latest innovations and entice visitors to shop. In addition to the large number of well-known and respected companies that have been exhibiting at the Ham Radio for many years, we have also been able to gain several 15.03.2018 Ham Radio 01/2018/KR Page 1

new exhibitors. The Bundesnetzagentur will also be back, testing devices and administering amateur radio operator exams, reports project leader Petra Rathgeber. The flea market will round out the offerings at the Ham Radio. DARC motto: Radio Scouting The Adventure of Youth Amateur Radio Amateur radio is very diverse and combines communication, engineering and sport in a unique way. Many people also use amateur radio in other fields. Thus, this year s motto for the 69th Lake Constance Meeting of the DARC highlights scouts and offers activities, exhibitions and lectures related to this topic. In past years, we have presented exhibits to the visitors that have shown them all of the different settings where radio is used. This year, we have invited the scouts who are active on the airwaves, keyword radio scouting. It is a very exciting topic for amateur radio operators and scouts, says an impressed DARC press spokeswoman Stephanie Heine. Visitors will be able to learn more about scouts and amateur radio at a special exhibition in the foyer as well as at a stand in the Rothaus Hall (Hall A1). For example, the Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) is a worldwide meeting of scouts interested in radio on certain amateur frequencies, which takes place every year in October. In addition, a huge yurt tent and a pioneering tower will be put up on the West Open Air Grounds. The scouts themselves will be able to learn more about amateur radio at various lectures and workshops. Energy, time and place: Teacher training course at the Ham Radio For the twelfth time, a teacher training course for participants from Baden- Württemberg, Bavaria, Austria and Switzerland will take place on the Friday of the Ham Radio. At the free course, teachers will attend presentations and workshops where they will learn how to bring students closer to electronics and information technology in natural science and engineering classes in a practical way. Optical phenomena in solar modules, determining time and position using radio and navigation using the sky are just some of the topics on the program this year related to the motto Energy, time and place. The continuing education program for teachers is a cooperative effort between the DARC and the Working Group on Amateur Radio and Telecommunications in Schools (AATiS). Questions and registration inquiries should be sent by e-mail to schule@darc.de. Foxoring competition: A fox hunt around the fairgrounds Sport is on the agenda on the Sunday of the show with the Foxoring competition. In the forest near the fairgrounds, the participants in the Foxoring (fox hunt) competition 15.03.2018 Ham Radio 01/2018/KR Page 2

will attempt to reach the end of the preset course and locate the most transmitters as fast as possible. The victors will be crowned immediately after the race. Interested parties can sign up at the Ham Radio itself, in the West Foyer. Ham Rally and Ham Camp: New experiences for the next generation of amateur radio operators Participants in the Ham Rally will be able to try out amateur radio operations for the first time. On Friday and Saturday, June 1 and 2, it will offer a varied program for young amateur radio operators between the ages of eight and eighteen, who will be able to answer tricky quiz questions, conduct telecommunications experiments, operate transmitters and send Morse code, and thereby learn more about the world of amateur radio. Anyone who wants to experience not only exciting days but also nights at the Ham Radio as well can participate in the Ham youth camp, organized by Messe Friedrichshafen and DARC. Young amateur radio operators (max. age 27) will spend three nights at the heart of the action, where they will get to meet people their own age who share the same hobby. Things stay interesting in the camp, even after the close of the show for the day. Experienting, using a kit to build the HamCamp Bell, a goal-shooting contest, go-kart racing and radio operations training are all part of the highly varied program. Additional information and registration is available at www.darc.de. Maker Faire Bodensee Sister Event Tinkering, experimenting and making it yourself: That is what the visiting event Maker Faire Bodensee, which is taking place alongside the HAM Radio on some days, is all about. For the fifth time, creative minds and tinkers will be able to get ideas and accessories during the HAM RADIO on Saturday and Sunday this time under the direction of the Wolfsburg-based trade fair and event organizers M.O.V.E. Opening times and motor home parking Messe Friedrichshafen offers visitors the opportunity to spend the night at a motor home parking space close to the exhibition - this year starting on the Monday before the show opens (May 28, 2018). The Ham Radio takes place from Friday, June 1 until Sunday, June 3, 2018 in Friedrichshafen. The Maker Faire will open its doors on Saturday, July 2 and Sunday, July 3. Day passes cost 11 Euros, 10 Euros in advance. A three day pass is available for 23 Euros or 20 Euros in advance. The passes grant visitors access to both events.
