Role playing and scenario games to deal with issues of global change Can virtuality influence reality? by Nathalie Caplet (replacing Eric Gorman) CAP SCIENCES, Bordeaux, France June 5th, 2010 12.00-13.15 session Black room, DASA, Ecsite annual conference

CAP SCIENCES presentation History and presentation of CLIM'WAY Dealing with a very real and global issue using a virtual context

CAP SCIENCES A science, technology and industry centre for the public, based in Bordeaux, Aquitaine, France Staff :about 35 permanent members Funding: mainly from public subsidies (Aquitaine region, Europe, French Ministry of Research) + about 25% self sufficient

Our missions Public awareness and understanding of science, technology and industry Design, production and presentation exhibitions, workshops, events, publications Bringing together a wide variety of professionals from the worlds of research and industry, education, culture, design and art...

A few figures Over 65 000 visitors in 2009 on site in Bordeaux 60 000 people in the rest of Aquitaine More than 200 000 people over all took part in activities presented by CAP SCIENCES Cap Sciences technicians and mediators travelled more than 40 000 km to disseminate scientific culture Also a wide variety of professional events in our centre

Birth of «Clim Way» Cap Sciences' experience: - in the subject : Exhibition «Climat sous Influence» (Climate under Influence) - in virtual exhibitions (free access online) Goal : To create an innovative tool, primarily targeted at teenagers

Birth of «Clim Way» Analysis of existing education tools on climate change A survey on public perception of climate change Scientific advisors (IPCC, CNRS, INRA, Météo France, ADEME) Educationnal advisors (biology, geology, history, geography, economy) Two test groups of students

Birth of «Clim Way» Budget :150 000 euros private / public A team of 3 : conception and research graphic design computer modelling 2 years (research to production)

Concept Educate teenagers to climate change Using media that affects this population Coupling information and simulations Choosing playful approach To place the players in an environment close to their everyday life (statistics and graphics environments, targets, economic and climatic data, etc.) Let s go to the website!

How to use it

A huge success In 2009, over 300 000 visits on the website 21 381 «player accounts» created Hundreds of press articles, websites, blogs, TV and radio stations have talked about Clim Way at national and international level

A reference - Integration with the IGLO toolkit (International Action on GLObal warming - ASTC) - Educationnal websites (Educasources, many academies, etc.) - Many presentation at trade shows and forums related to sustainable development and education (including COP 15)

Future developments Local versions : Rouen Metropole, Aquitaine region, city of Bordeaux) Regional versions : different contexts than of western Europe (project with the World Bank and Ademe : southern shore of Mediterranean basin) Commercial demands... Towards a Clim Way 2

Feedback on climate change education - Transverse approach / implication (stakeholders, activities and environments) - Coordination between mitigation and adaptation (climate plan) - Relationships between energy and greenhouse gases - No miracle solutions!

Virtuality to understand reality A virtual world not to escape into, but to explain with. Close links with the real world (culture related) graphic / contents / context (parameters) the stakeholders : citizens, companies, local authorities

Virtuality to understand reality A virtual situation to eliminate constrains the time factor the various interactions : stakeholders, sectors... > to better understand

Virtuality to understand reality «Serious game» > a real game media) teenage culture interest from video game world (blogs,
