September 1921 SEPTEMBER SEPTEMBER 3 Saint Gregory the Great, Pope and Doctor of the Church Memorial [635] St. Gregory (540 604) abandoned his position in the Roman government to become a monk and used his wealth to found six monasteries, meanwhile serving as a papal legate to Constantinople. When elected Pope, he instituted liturgical reforms and organized missions; due to him, missionaries were first sent to England. Entrance Antiphon Beátus Gregórius, in cáthedra Petri sublimátus, semper spéciem Dómini quærébat, atque in sollemnitáte illíus amóris habitábat. Blessed Gregory, raised upon the throne of Peter, sought always the beauty of the Lord and lived in celebration of that love. Collect O God, who care for your people with gentleness and rule them in love, through the intercession of Pope Saint Gregory, endow, we pray, with a spirit of wisdom those to whom you have given authority to govern, that the flourishing of a holy flock may become the eternal joy of the shepherds. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Communion Antiphon Lk 12: 42 Fidélis servus et prudens, quem constítuit Dóminus super famíliam suam, ut det illis in témpore trítici mensúram. This is the steward, faithful and prudent, whom the Lord set over his household to give them their allowance of food at the proper time. Prayer after Communion Through Christ the teacher, O Lord, instruct those you feed with Christ, the living Bread, that on the feast day of Saint Gregory they may learn your truth and express it in works of charity. SEPTEMBER 8 The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Feast [636] This feast commemorates the birth of her who was to be the Mother of the Savior because the Blessed Virgin Mary occupies a unique place in salvation history. Our Lord reserved for her the highest mission ever entrusted to any creature. Entrance Antiphon Cum iucunditáte Nativitátem beátæ Maríæ Vírginis celebrémus, ex qua ortus est sol iustítia, Christus Deus noster. Let us celebrate with joy the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, for from her arose the sun of justice, Christ our God. The Gloria in excelsis (Glory to God in the highest) is said. Collect Impart to your servants, we pray, O Lord, the gift of heavenly grace, that the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin may bring deeper peace to those for whom the birth of her Son was the dawning of salvation.

September 1923 Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. First Reading (1st Option) Mi 5: 1 4a The time when she who is to give birth has borne. A reading from the Book of the Prophet Micah The Lord says: You, Bethlehem-Ephrathah, too small to be among the clans of Judah, From you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel; Whose origin is from of old, from ancient times. (Therefore the Lord will give them up, until the time when she who is to give birth has borne, And the rest of his brethren shall return to the children of Israel.) He shall stand firm and shepherd his flock by the strength of the Lord, in the majestic name of the Lord, his God; And they shall remain, for now his greatness shall reach to the ends of the earth; he shall be peace. First Reading (2nd Option) Rom 8: 28 30 For those he foreknew he also predestined. A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans Brothers and sisters: We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those he predestined he also called; and those he called he also justified; and those he justified he also glorified. Responsorial Psalm Ps 13: 6ab, 6c Gaudens gaudébo in Dómino. (Is 61: 10) With delight I rejoice in the Lord. Though I trusted in your mercy, let my heart rejoice in your salvation. Let me sing of the Lord, He has been good to me. Alleluia Felix es, sacra Virgo María, et omni laude digníssima, quia ex te ortus est sol iustítiæ, Christus Deus noster. Alleluia, alleluia. Blessed are you, holy Virgin Mary, deserving of all praise; from you rose the sun of justice, Christ our God. Alleluia, alleluia.

1924 Proper of Saints Gospel (Long Form) Mt 1: 1 16, 18 23 For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. Perez became the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram, Ram the father of Amminadab. Amminadab became the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab. Boaz became the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth. Eleazar became the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ. Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him

September 1925 Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means God is with us. Gospel (Short Form) Mt 1: 18 23 For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means God is with us. Prayer over the Offerings May the humanity of your Only Begotten Son come, O Lord, to our aid, and may he, who at his birth from the Blessed Virgin did not diminish but consecrated her integrity, by taking from us now our wicked deeds, make our oblation acceptable to you. Or: As we celebrate with joy the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we bring you our offerings, O Lord, and we humbly pray to be given strength by the humanity of your Son, who from her was pleased to take flesh. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Preface I of the Blessed Virgin Mary (and on the Nativity), p. 752, or II, p. 752.

1926 Proper of Saints Communion Antiphon Is 7: 14; Mt 1: 21 Ecce Virgo páriet Fílium, qui salvum fáciet pópulum suum a peccátis eórum. Behold, the Virgin will bear a son, who will save his people from their sins. Prayer after Communion May your Church exult, O Lord, for you have renewed her with these sacred mysteries, as she rejoices in the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which was the hope and the daybreak of salvation for all the world. The Solemn Blessing formula, p. 828, may be used. SEPTEMBER 9 [In the Dioceses of the United States] Saint Peter Claver, priest and religious Memorial [636A] Born near Barcelona, St. Peter (1580 1654) was a Jesuit missionary who ministered to African slaves as they arrived at the South American seaport of Cartagena. Enduring the derision of the slave traders, he fed the hungry, cared for the sick and dying, preached the Gospel, and baptized converts for nearly forty years. From the Common of Pastors: For One Pastor (p. 2074), or from the Common of Holy Men and Women: For Those Who Practiced Works of Mercy (p. 2095). Collect O God, who made Saint Peter Claver a slave of slaves and strengthened him with wonderful charity and patience as he came to their help, grant, through his intercession, that, seeking the things of Jesus Christ, we may love our neighbor in deeds and in truth. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
