It was approved on behalf of the Council of Standards Australia on 20 October 2014 and on behalf of the Council of Standards New Zealand on 17 October 2014. This standard was published on 27 November 2014. AS/NZS 4024.1100:2014 2 PREFACE This Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand Committee SF-041, General Principles for the Guarding of Machinery, to provide background information and an application guide for the AS(/NZS) 4024.1 series. This Standard replaces AS 4024.1101 2006 in the series, which has been withdrawn. The principal task of the 2014 revisions of several parts of the AS 4024.1 2006 series was to consider the latest international revisions to the Standards incorporated in the original 2006 Standards. One of the core principles upon which the 2006 Standards were based was to publish the series as a series of small parts, so that when new editions of relevant ISO, IEC or EN Standards became available, they could be adopted and published within the framework of AS 4024 with minimum delay, so ensuring continued international alignment. When the Committee released the 2006 Standards, it had the flexibility available to insert qualifying or explanatory comment within the text of the international Standard, as well as deleting other material generally irrelevant to Australian users (e.g. Type A, B and C Standards). Such an approach considerably extends the publishing timeframe, and in the interests of timely publishing of this revision the Committee has now adopted the principle of direct text adoption of the relevant international Standards. This also accords with Australia s growing reliance on and participation in the global manufacturing environment and various international trade agreements. Direct text adoption does introduce some duplication from part to part, and extensive referencing to ISO, EN and IEC Standards. In some cases terminology might not be that to which the Australian user is commonly accustomed. Where necessary, the Committee has included qualifying or explanatory comment in this part of the series. Such comment does not alter or diminish the technical intent of the international Standard, but simply provides additional clarification within the Australian/New Zealand context. Committee SF-041 is now a Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand Committee, and the 2014 revisions of parts of the AS 4024.1 2006 series are being published as Joint Australian/New Zealand Standards. However, Parts 1501, 1502 and 1603 of the AS 4024.1 2006 series were reviewed by the Committee and it was decided that those Standards will not be revised at this stage and remain current. Therefore, the 2006 editions of those Standards have been reconfirmed as Australian Standards (AS) without technical changes and are part of the AS(/NZS) 4024.1:2014 series. They are expected to become Joint Standards (AS/NZS) when they are revised in the future. The term informative has been used in this Standard to define the application of the appendix to which it applies. An informative appendix is only for information and guidance.

AS/NZS 4024.1100:2014 4 STANDARDS AUSTRALIA/STANDARDS NEW ZEALAND Australian/New Zealand Standard Safety of machinery Part 1100: Application guide 1 SCOPE The AS(/NZS) 4024.1 series provides users with the essential framework for designing and operating safe machine systems. It applies to single items of machinery or groupings of machines, so that a safe interface between discrete items is also assured. In the Australian and Australian/New Zealand context, the Standards apply to all workplace machinery and equipment described as plant in legislation. They do not apply to handpowered plant or hand-supported powered plant, although the principles contained within the Standards can provide guidance for many applications in the broader workplace. 2 OBJECTIVE The objective of the AS(/NZS) 4024.1 series is to enable those who design, manufacture, supply, control, use and maintain machinery to minimize the risks to the health and safety of people working with or near machinery, by providing technical principles for the design, manufacture, maintenance and use of machine systems. 3 DOCUMENTS REFERENCED IN THE SERIES Direct text adoption means that the referenced Standards in the constituent parts all bear international Standard numbers. Some, but not all, are embedded within the AS(/NZS) 4024.1 series. Where this is the case, a list is provided in the Preface of each part showing international referenced documents and the equivalent AS(/NZS) Standards. This will help users to quickly navigate to the required part. A cross-reference table showing the AS(/NZS) part numbers of this series and the relevant international (ISO, IEC and EN) Standards is also provided in Appendix B. It is expected from experience that there will be minimal need for recourse to the crossreference list, as users will quickly become familiar with the relevant parts. 4 STRUCTURE AND RATIONALE The suite of the AS(/NZS) 4024.1 series is based on the structure of European Standards. This consists of three levels of Standards which users will find set out in a number of the Standards embedded in the series. Although the A, B and C level Standards have no relevance in Australia and New Zealand, this structure and interrelationship provided a template for the development of the Australian and Joint AS/NZS Standards.
