ICS Seminar 8th & 9th November Pastes based on organic pigments for colourmatching of RAL shades

Who is Helio Beit? - Company Founded 2015 (family owned) - Previously operating as a part of Bollig & Kemper - Experience since more than 35 years - Specialists exclusively for producing pigment pastes suitable for systems of solvent-, water-, UV- & alkyd basis. - Markets are classic coatings, plastics, glass, glues, mineral materials, UV nail gels etc. - 250 t/year

History of RAL - In 1925, the private sector and the German government of that time founded the "Reichs-Ausschuss für Lieferbedingungen" RAL - 1927 Beginning of colour standardization with first RAL colour chart - 1953 / 1961 Revision of the industrial standard RAL 840-HR Surface Semi gloss /dull - 1986 Launch of the high gloss industrial standard RAL 841-GL - 1993 Launch of the RAL DESIGN System

RAL 1 - Yellow colour shades RAL 2 - Orange colour shades RAL 3 - Red colour shades RAL 4 - Violet colour shades RAL 5 - Blue colour shades RAL 6 - Green colour shades RAL 7 - Grey colour shades RAL 8 - Brown colour shades RAL 9 - Black / White colour shades Structure of RAL 840 HR and RAL 841 GL

We will give you a small overview about yellow, orange and red shades in the presentation. Important tests in the grinding process are:

Particle size Grindomter to measure the max. particle size Results : for example < 10 µm Colour shade in mixture with a standard white paint Colour computer to measure the difference to a standard sample Results : ΔL / Δa / Δb ΔE = ΔL 2 + Δa 2 + Δb 2 ΔC / Δh

RAL 1 Yellow colour shades Common organic pigments are: Colour Index Trade names Paste names P Y 74 Irgalite (Sico ) Yellow ; Hansa Yellow; Heuco Yellow; Acetanil Yellow UN/UL/LW/UV 206 Characteristics : Pigment for standard industrial application Mid shade yellow for economic formulation Disadvantage: Low temperature resistance, low light resitsance in mixture with white. Low oversprayfastness Grinding : Due to the low temperature and solvent resitance, the grinding must be done very carefully. High temperature and high sheare rates can destroy the pigment. Results are lower chroma and lower colourstrength of the yellow paint Traffic Yellow RAL 1023 Bad results in colourmatching of RAL shades like

Colour Index Trade names Paste names PY 138 Paliotol Yellow; Lysopac Yellow; Sinfast Yellow UN/UL/LW 208 Charateristics : organic greenish yellow pigment with good light and weather fastness. High chroma and a very pure shade Good temperature resistance and overspray fastness. Grinding : Colourstrength, chroma and colour shade depends on the minimum particle size High shear rates are necessary to develop the whole potential of the pigment. The grinding machines must be very clean for the pure shade of the pigment. Risk: The pigment is expensive and if your grinding process is not perfect you will not achieve the maximum chroma and colourstrength of the pigment Bad results in colourmatching of shades like RAL 1016, 1021, 1023

Colour Index Trade names Paste names PY 151 Hostaperm Yellow, Chromophtal Yellow, Monolite Yellow UN 207 Charateristics : organic pigment with good light and weather fastness. ( mid shade greenisch yellow ) High chroma and good colourstrength Good temperature resistance and overspray fastness. Grinding and risks similar to the PY 138

RAL 2 orange colour shades Common organic pigments are: Colour Index Trade names Paste names P Y 83 Novoperm Yellow ; Monolite Yellow; Sinfast Yellow UN/UV 218, 219 Characteristics : Pigment for standard industrial application Very reddish shade yellow for economic formulation The pigment is available in an opaque and transparent version. Grinding : The cleanness of the grinding machines is very important for all reddish yellow pigments and orange pigments. The grinding process has also a big influence on the colour shade of the pigment. Abrasion of the milling beads and the surface of the machinery have to be avoided Especially the colour values a* ( + a* means more red / - a* more green ) and b* ( + b* means more yellow / - b* means more blue ) must be checked during the grinding process

Poor results in grinding of reddish-yellow and orange pigments are: ( In mixture with the standard white ) Δa - negative value pigment is too much green Δb - negative value pigment is too much blue As a consequence of this : Problems with the colour matching of pure orange shades like RAL 2004 pure orange ; RAL 2009 Traffic orange and also reddish yellow shades like 1028 Melon yellow

Colour Index Trade names paste names P Y 139 Paliotol Yellow; Monolite Yellow; Novoperm Yellow UN/UL/LW/UV 216 Characteristics : Reddish yellow pigment with good wheather and light fastness. Similar to the P Y 138 the grinding must be done very intensive to achieve the maximum colour strength and chroma of the pigment. P O 36 Novoperm Orange; Lysopac Orange; Sinfast Orange UN 326 Characteristics : Reddish orange pigment with good wheather and light fastness. Suitable for reddish-orange shades like RAL 2001, 2002 and 2012 P O 67 Paliotol Orange UL/LW/UV 307 Characteristics : orange pigment with good wheather and light fastness close to full shade Suitable for orange shades like RAL 2003, 2004 and 2008

RAL 3 Red colour shades Common organic pigments are: Colour Index Trade names Paste names P R 112 Irgalite Red; Permanent Red; Sinfast Red UN/UL/LW 303 Characteristics : Pigment for standard industrial application Mid shade red for economic formulation Disadvantage: Lower temperature resistance, low resitsance against solvents, low overspray fastness. Grinding: In the grinding process high temperature and high shear sates should be avoided. The pigment can be destroyed ( colourdtrength low, the mixture with Standard white togreen ) You can not achieve pure red shades like RAL 3020

Colour Index Trade names Paste names P R 170 NovopermRed ; Lysopac Red ; Sinfast Red UN/UV/LW 308 Characteristics : organic red pigment with high chroma and a verypure colour Grinding: Careful grinding process, the equipment must be veryclean tokeep the pure shade of the pigment. The a-value (red-green axis ) must be checked during the grinding P R 254 Irgazin Red, Hosataperm Red, Monolite Red, Cinilex Red UN / LW 324 Characteristics : pigment based on the DPP-chemistry, highest light- and weather fastness of organic red pigments The producer must check the development of the a-value during the grinding process. Grinding: Risks and grinding information similar top R 170

Colour Index Trade names Paste names P R 122 Hostaperm Pink; Lysopac Red; Monolite Red UN/UL/LW/UV 305 Characteristics : organic red pigment with high colourstrength and very good light- and weather fastness. In combination with TiO 2 for bluisch red, pink and magenta shades. Grinding: Pigment with high specific surface and therefore difficult in dispersing and wetting. You need perfect equipment and experiance to achieve the maximum performance of the pigment. Because of the high colourstrength of the paste you will have high effort in clleaning-process of the equipment.

Summary Necessary tests of pigment-grindings are: - Particle size - Colourshade in Combination with TiO 2 compared to standard Some pigments for economic formulation can be destroyed in the grinding process - Useful information are lower resistance against temperature, solvents and chemicals - Low overspray fastness. The cleanness of the equipment and a professional grinding process is very important for pigments which are used to match brillant yellow, orange and red colour shades

A paint-producer, who wants to do the whole grinding for his own needs a lot of expensive dispersing equipment. Cleaning processes with high effort will be necessary to prepare the equipment. Alternatives: Liquid pastes based on the pigments. The risk of the production is on the side of the supplier of the pastes. The producer of the pigmentpaste uses the perfect equipment in production. The formulation of the paste is special designed for every different pigment to achieve the maximum performance.

Please note: The mentioned types of pigments (Colour Index and Trade names) are only a small selection of pigments, which are used in industrial paint production. We think that they are good examples to show the relation between pigment, grinding and colourmatching. If you have any question or need additional information, do not hesitate to contact us.
