Mitsubishi Electric R&D Centre Europe is located at the heart of the European research ecosystem, in two separate sites, in Rennes, France, and in Livingston, United Kingdom. At these two locations, Mitsubishi Electric R&D Centre Europe thinks up new generations of communication systems and future technologies in the field of energy and the environment. The R&D projects enable the development of a highly-connected and environmentally-conscious global society. Through its work, the laboratory strives to continuously improve the reliability and quality of various solutions to ensure the sustainable growth of the group.

MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC R&D CENTRE EUROPE Mitsubishi Electric R&D Centre Europe is a Research & Development laboratory belonging to the Mitsubishi Electric group with its head office in Japan. Its main role is to support the group s different activities through applied research.

THE FRENCH FACILITY MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC R&D CENTRE EUROPE - FRANCE Founded in 1995, Mitsubishi Electric R&D Centre Europe was set up in the middle of the scientific campus of Rennes, the capital of Brittany. The laboratory has a team of highly qualified researchers, bringing together digital and energy sciences to unite the worlds of communication and power electronics. The French laboratory regularly works together with other European academic and industrial players, and takes part in various French and European collaborative projects.

Communication systems Today, the French laboratory is a major player in the field of information and communication technologies. It is also a centre of expertise in formal methods for software development. Its goal is to meet the new challenges of a society which is becoming increasingly connected while being subject to everstricter safety and reliability requirements. The laboratory s expertise in network and digital communication enables the development of new technologies and architectures required to build future generations of communication and broadcasting systems. The development of prototypes enables validation of innovative products featuring wireless, optical or satellite solutions for professional sectors and general public applications. In a world of convergent technologies, the research centre actively participates in the development of European and international standards for future communication systems. Power electronics systems The expertise of the French laboratory also lies in the design of systems requiring new topologies of innovative power electronics. The centre s goal is to meet the top demand of the third millennium sustainable energy. The laboratory designs new power converters based on innovative and strongly integrated architectures, as well as intelligent systems. These converters achieve greater energy efficiency while considerably reducing costs. This is a major advantage when developing complex systems such as solar farms, airconditioning systems, and new transport and production networks for heterogeneous electrical power. Mitsubishi Electric R&D Centre Europe is also at the cutting edge of R&D for the design of reliable and robust components and systems. The laboratory works independently in the rapid prototyping of these power components : from simulation, to design, manufacturing and testing.

HVAC systems Mitsubishi Electric R&D Centre Europe carries out R&D across a wide spectrum of HVACS areas, including heat pump products and heating systems. Extensive experimental evaluation of heat pumps and systems enables improvements in technology and application. Specific target areas include energy saving and user-friendliness. THE BRITISH FACILITY The UK branch is located on the site of Mitsubishi Air Conditioning Systems Europe in Livingston, Scotland, the European factory for production of air-conditioning systems. The British facility is the only Mitsubishi Electric plant in the world to have the manufacturing and R&D functions operating side by side. There is significant effort across all areas from research & development, through to design engineering and production. As an R&D unit, the Livingston branch is engaged with key UK and European academic institutions. The laboratory is also developing sophisticated numerical models of components, heating systems and test buildings. These models are refined by use of experimental results. Simulations can then be used to predict performance for heating systems in other building types and for development of new components, heat pump products and heating systems. Thanks to its House-type HVACS Evaluation Facility, the centre has a world-class R&D facility that is being used for measuring the detailed environmental conditions of temperature and humidity within actual domestic buildings and for in depth monitoring of the operation of the heating systems. 1,5 V

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY «OPEN INNOVATION» AND PROMOTING RESEARCH To enhance its research activities, Mitsubishi Electric R&D Centre Europe is fully committed to an open innovation approach through various bilateral and multilateral cooperation activities with national, European and international partners. The research activities generate many patent registrations as well as publications in the most prestigious scientific reviews. The laboratory also takes part in international standardisation bodies in hopes of contributing to the design of future generations of products in an increasingly global market. Through its scientific excellence, the laboratory anticipates the adoption of future technologies and prepares the way for a connected, sustainable and energy-efficient world. Social responsibility is an integral part of all of Mitsubishi Electric group s activities. The company s motto Changes for the Better is reflected daily in the quality of its research and in a code of ethics shared by all employees. Mitsubishi Electric R&D Centre Europe is fully committed to the Mitsubishi Electric group s environmental approach. The objective is to provide, by 2021, the solutions to achieve a low-carbon society that will promote recycling and respect biodiversity. The laboratory has developed as part of an international group where scientific excellence, curiosity, team spirit and a multi-cultural mindset are the key qualities of its employees. The quality of employee relations is extremely important to the organisation, especially in a context where creativity is an essential part of research activities. Mitsubishi Electric R&D Centre Europe also plays an active role in training young postgraduate students by providing an extremely dynamic working environment that includes leading researchers in their respective fields.
