Notice of changes to transmission from 27 October 2014 Stay tuned to RTÉ Radio1 RTÉ Radio 1 s Longwave 252 service (LW252) will close down on 27 October 2014. The vast majority (98%) of Radio 1 listeners are not affected and no change is necessary. However, you will need to retune your radio if you listen to RTÉ Radio 1 on LW252.
What is happening to Longwave 252? On 27 October 2014, RTÉ s Longwave 252 broadcast will close down. Longwave listeners should retune to RTÉ Radio 1 on FM. Other listeners are not affected. Why is the service closing? The audience for the LW252 service is very small The vast majority of the RTÉ Radio 1 audience listens to the superior sound of FM Longwave broadcasting is out of date, has poor audio quality and provides unreliable reception LW is inconsistent with environmental best practice and represents poor value for money RTÉ Radio 1 is also available on nationwide stereo FM, on DAB digital radio, on all digital television platforms and on the RTÉ Radioplayer (online and mobile). See further pages for details. I listen on FM. What should I do? This change will not affect you. FM service remains unchanged. (DAB digital radio is also not affected.) How will I find LW252 programme options such as religious services and additional sports coverage? These are available on the digital channel, RTÉ Radio 1 Extra. What does this mean for me? Get to know your radio display If you listen to RTÉ Radio 1 on Longwave 252 you will need to retune to FM between 88 and 90 MHz or to DAB digital radio (where available) How do I know which band I am currently listening on? Check the band switch or letters on the display on your radio. It will be marked with frequency options including some of the following: FM, DAB, LW, AM. Why not retune during a programme you know? That way, you ll be sure you have found the right station. Note for listeners in Northern Ireland and Britain. If you are a listener to RTÉ Radio 1 Longwave in Northern Ireland please check for FM reception. If you cannot receive RTÉ Radio 1 on FM OR if you are a listener resident on the island of Britain please see later sections on digital radio.
