In 1964, Valerie was born in Massachusetts, and in 1970 moved to Maine. She grew up in a multicreative family, on a farm located in south western Maine. During her childhood, she expressed only a passing interest in art. In 1995, Valerie took a drawing class at the University of Maine at Augusta. She discovered she could use the arts as a way to communicate her thoughts, feelings, and experiences. In 1997, after taking a number of art classes, she finally recognized she was mentally ill and needed help. She was hospitalized and prescribed medication. She has taken a few classes since, but was too medicated to reconnect with the creative spark she found inside years before. Now, after 12 years, she has begun to release, through the art group at the LINC Club, taught by Natasha Mayers, the silent screams that have welled up inside her, from so many years of silence. She states, I am a sculptor first; however, I have no space to sculpt. I began to paint this summer (2009), and have discovered a combination of my love for sculpting, color, and layers of whatever materials I find, to build colorful, dimensional paintings. She says, I put down on canvas the anxiety, immense energy and depression I feel, from my heart, as well as the fragmented thoughts that sometimes occupy my mind. My art, my partner, my dogs, and my family, are my passion. She says it helps her get through the things she fears most, inside and out. She has exhibited her work before; never on her own, and only assignments she did in school. She lost 12 years of creativity and is now finding her own voice, through writing and visual arts. She attempts to express her inner conflicts she feels like mania vs. depression, love vs. fear, war vs. peace, inside vs. outside, and how these conflicts well up and subside, well up and subside. She says, The reward from sharing the process is immense. She uses these conflicting thoughts, and feelings, along with her immense energy, to create layers of materials that make her art her own. On top of her inner conflicts, she has learned, over time, through her observations, and experiences about the world we all live in, that it is imperative we search and Stop and listen to that which is quiet. It speaks loudest to the silent, peaceful place in our hearts, where love and light can grow and be shared. for the silent, peaceful place I know lives somewhere in my heart,
