MS260i 1/4 M IMAGING SPECTROGRAPHS ENTRANCE EXIT MS260i Spectrograph with 3 Track Fiber on input and InstaSpec IV CCD on output. Fig. 1 OPTICAL CONFIGURATION High resolution Up to three gratings, with computer controlled grating change RS-232 and IEEE-488 communications Built-in shutter Built-in filter wheel control The MS260i ¼ m Imaging Spectrographs are economical, fully automated, multi-grating instruments. We offer single and dual output models with dual and triple grating mounts. All are F/3.9 instruments with a flat, 28 mm image plane for multichannel detectors. Stray light is negligible, re-entrant spectra are eliminated, throughput is high, and spatial and spectral resolution are impressive. RS232 and IEEE-488 interfaces are standard. IMPRESSIVE SPATIAL AND SPECTRAL RESOLUTION The MS260i Spectrographs have very good spatial and spectral resolution. The dual grating instrument offers improved resolution, over the triple grating instrument. Spatial resolution is 40 µm for the dual grating model, compared to 50 µm for the triple grating version. The grating mounts are interchangeable, so if you currently have a triple grating MS260i, you can easily convert it to a dual grating instrument. Simply choose two "Dual Grating " from Table 2 on page 51. These assemblies mount directly to the turret in your MS260i. Optical configuration of a dual MS260i Spectrograph. Fig. 1 shows the asymmetrical in-plane Czerny-Turner optical configuration of a dual grating MS260i. The input F/# is F/3.9, and the input and exit focal lengths are unequal 220 and 257 mm. A set of computer optimized toroidal mirrors produce accurate images of the input slit in the flat output plane. The superior spatial resolution of the MS260i sets it apart from most other imaging spectrographs; the aberration limited spatial resolution is 40 µm(fwhm), for the dual grating instrument. This fine imaging capability also allows high throughput for small pixel arrays, like the new InGaAs PDAs. See page 71 for these new detectors DESIGNED FOR MULTI-TRACK SPECTROSCOPY Multi-track Spectroscopy is the simultaneous recording of multiple spectra. You can't find a better Multi-track Spectroscopy instrument combination than Oriel s s Imaging CCD Detectors and a dual grating MS260i. One of the factors limiting the number of spectra which can be recorded simultaneously is the spectrograph s magnification. MS260i uses toroidal mirrors instead of the more common but poorly imaging spherical mirrors. The result is a 1.1 horizontal and 1.6 vertical magnification. It is important to note here that both the dual grating and the triple grating MS260i Spectrographs have the same magnifications, and can therefore resolve the same number of tracks from a Oriel Multi-Track Fiber. However, the image quality from a dual grating MS260i is superior to that from a triple grating instrument. MS260i 1/4 M IMAGING SPECTROGRAPHS DUAL DETECTOR PORTS The 74055 MS260i is our dual output port model. The 74055 gives you added versatility without compromise in performance; you can mount a silicon array on one port and an InGaAs array on the other, for extended wavelength measurements. The 74055 has a motorized flip mirror to switch between ports; the flip mirror can be controlled via the 74009 Hand Controller or MS260i Command Set. VERY LOW STRAY LIGHT One of the design criteria for MS260i was to mimimize stray light. It is important that diffracted light not be allowed to reflect from the mirrors, or from the face of a focal plane detector, back onto the grating. This light could then be rediffracted and cause ghost images or stray light at the detector. The wide open optical layout and exaggerated tilt of the exit focal plane of the MS260i ensure that there is zero re-entrant spectra. 74010 Filter Wheel mounted to the input of the MS 260i. MOTORIZED FILTER WHEEL Resolution of 0.15 nm, with a 10 µm x 2 mm slit and a 1200 l/mm grating, is possible with a dual grating MS260i. MULTI-TRACK FIBERS FOR MS260i Multi-Track Spectroscopy is easily accomplished with the MS260i Spectrograph. To increase efficiency and minimize stray light, we recommend that you use the 77529 F/# Matcher to match the F/# of the fiber to that of the spectrograph. You can also couple the fiber to the spectrograph directly with the 77502 Fiber Adapter. The 77502 holds the fiber against the spectrograph slit and provides focusing capability. The 74010 Filter Wheel holds up to six 1.0 inch (25.4 mm) diameter neutral density or bandpass filters; the clear aperture is 0.87 inch (22 mm). It mounts directly to the input port of the MS260i. Even with the 74010 attached, the spectrograph F/number is still F/3.9. Quick and Easy Filter Changes The MS260i controls will also command the filter wheel. (We talk about the MS260i controls on the following page.) Filter changeover is only 1 second for adjacent filters. Filter replacement usually requires breaking down the optical path in order to remove and insert new filters in the filter wheel, but not with the 74010! Filters are held in individual mounts which snap into place from the top of the wheel. The individual filter holders (six are included with each wheel) are also sold separately under model 74011 so you can mount all your filters for ready insertion into the filter wheel. The 74012 Rod Mount holds a 74011 Filter Holder atop an optical rod. BUILT-IN SHUTTER A 0.5 Hz repetition rate shutter is built into the MS260i. You can close the shutter for dark current measurements, or when changing a grating, to protect the detector. A shutter is required for almost all CCD applications (except full vertical binning mode). Minimum exposure time for the shutter is 0.2 s. The shutter is activated from the MS260i controls or via an externally applied TTL gate. Fig. 2 9 track fiber bundle (200 µm cores) imaged through MS260i on an InstaSpec IV CCD. MS260i 1/4 M IMAGING SPECTROGRAPHS WAVELENGTH DRIVE The MS260i uses a high speed stepping motor drive for rapid wavelength changes. This same drive is used to change the grating; grating change takes approximately 10 seconds. 32-bit Virtual Instruments For those who wish to write their own application, or want to integrate the MS260i with other laboratory instruments using LabView, we ship 32-bit VIs with every MS260i. 32-bit Virtual Instruments These are intuitive, simple commands. If you are incorporating the MS260i into a system with many other computer controlled components, we recommend that you use this command set and the GPIB interface. Below are examples of the commands. SHUTTER C Close the shutter GRAT 2 Change to the second grating FILTER 5 Change to filter position 5 Computer and accessory interfaces on MS260i Spectrograph. CONTROLLING THE MS260i MS260i functions are completely automated; no manual hand crank for wavelength scanning or open/close switch for the shutter. There are two ways to command the spectrograph and its accessories: Hand Controller We recommend you purchase a Hand Controller even if you intend to operate the MS260i via computer, as it is a simple tool to set up your system or develop experiment procedures Computer Control The spectrograph comes standard with an RS-232 and an IEEE-488 (GPIB) interface (see photograph above). There are various computer control options for the MS260i : LabView VIs (included) Utility Program for system operation check (included) InstaSpec Data Acquisition Software (included with InstaSpec Multichannel Detectors) Hand Controller The 74009 Hand Controller lets you set the instrument parameters and perform all the functions of the MS260i, e.g. wavelength changes, grating change and open/close shutter, and it controls the MS260i accessories such as the filter wheel. The 74009 is a dedicated hand controller; this means that the keys are labeled with intuitive commands, e.g. Go Wave, so you don t have to memorize key sequences to perform a function. Instrument parameters (grating lines/mm, filter wheel position, current wavelength and shutter status) are always displayed on the backlit LCD. Fig. 3 MS260i Utility Program. Fig. 3 shows the set-up screen of the Utility Program. This program commands the MS260i and its accessories (filter wheel, shutter). It also provides access to system parameters and calibration values InstaSpec Software InstaSpec Multichannel Detectors (PDAs and CCDs) include a Windows based instrument control and data acquisition software. This application acquires, processes and displays the data in real time. Through the software you can control the MS260i and its accessories (filter wheel and shutter). InstaSpec Software also includes a programming language called InstaSpec Basic which lets you write custom routines. Contact us for further information on any of the products in this catalog

MS260i 1/4 M IMAGING SPECTROGRAPHS GRATINGS The MS260i holds two or three gratings simultaneously (depending upon the grating assemblies that you choose). Each grating is mounted in an individual, pre-aligned mount. If you intend to use the Spectrograph as a dual grating instrument, order two grating assemblies from the "Dual Grating " list in Table 2. If you intend to use the MS260i as a triple grating instrument, choose your gratings from the "Triple Grating " list. Add Gratings in the Field You can add and change gratings in the field without changing the instrument's grating turret. However, you may have to replace your current grating assemblies. If you want to change a dual grating instrument to a triple grating instrument, you cannot simply order a third grating; all three of your gratings need to be Triple Grating. Equally, if you wish to convert your Triple Grating MS260i to a Dual Grating instrument (to improve resolution), you can't simply remove one grating; you will need to order two new Dual Grating. Grating are easily interchangable in the MS260i. MS260i 1/4 M IMAGING SPECTROGRAPHS THROUGHPUT vs SPECTRAL RESOLUTION The spectral resolution and throughput of a spectrograph is determined, in part, by the width of the input slit. It often comes down to a tradeoff between throughput and spectral resolution. We recommend that you experiment with a couple of different slit widths. FOUR TYPES OF SLIT ASSEMBLIES The MS260i requires an input slit assembly; we offer three types. All have a 1.5 Inch Series male flange. Mate any female flanged component directly to the slit. To mate another male flanged component to the slit, use the 77829 or 77792 Double Male Adapter. Motorized Slit Assmebly Automated resolution control Variable width from 6 µm to 3 mm ±5 µm repeatability 6 µm resolution ±10 µm accuracy This is our most versatile slit assembly. Change your instrument s resolution by varying the slit width from 6 µm to 3 mm, in 6 µm steps. To operate a motorized slit, you also need the 74116 Slit Control Board; this board operates up to three motorized slits. Control is via the 74009 Hand Controller, or software. Micrometer Driven Slit Assembly Continuously variable width from 4 µm to 3 mm Continuously variable height from 2 to 12 mm ±10 µm repeatability ±10 µm accuracy from 4 to 250 µm, ±5% from 250 µm to 3 mm The 74001 Slit Assembly offers you the greatest flexibility to change widths. A precision micrometer opens the assembly from 4 µm to 3 mm wide. Table 3 Approximate Resolution of Fixed Slits Slit Width Slit Height Slit Model 10 2 77222 25 3 77220 25 6 77725 50 3 77221 50 6 77219 100 3 77728 100 10 77729 200 3 77730 200 10 77731 500 15 77732 Fixed Slit Assembly Low cost alternative for fixed bandwidth Fixed width and height If you only need a few slit sizes, a fixed slit assembly is the most practical choice. Order the 77294 Fixed Slit Holder and one or more fixed slits from Table 3. The slits slide into the 77294; interchange slits without losing position. Multiple Fixed Slit Assembly 8 fixed slit positions from 50 µm to 3.16 mm Slit height is adjustable from 1 to 12 mm The 77269 is a rotating disc with 8 fixed and detented slit positions (50, 120, 280, 600, 760, 1240, 1560, and 3160 µm). A manual wheel rotates the disc to the desired slit position.
