SPRING MANDALA QUILT & CUSHION Approx. size Quilt 56 1/2in x 56 1/2in Cushion 14in BEFORE THE FUN BEGINS Please read all instructions before you begin. Abbreviations. WOF = width of the fabric. Are you new to patchwork & quilting? There are many fantastic classes being run at your local patchwork and quilting store. You can also find fantastic step-by-step tutorials on the internet that will help you get started. This pattern is not intended to replace a class. Requirements are based on fabric 115cm (44in) wide unless otherwise stated. Fabric requirements may differ from person to person due to cutting methods. If in doubt it is a good idea to purchase a little extra fabric. Fusible webbing requirements will vary greatly between products and projects; assume you will need a lot and go from there! 1/4in seam allowances are used throughout unless otherwise stated. Pre-washed 100% cotton fabrics are recommended. Press all seams towards the darker fabric or in the direction that creates the least bulk. Please refer to the photo of the project and the quilt diagrams to help with colour choices and layout. I would recommend using an applique mat with all but the most simple applique shapes. Our patterns are proof-read and made by our lovely testers but sometimes mistakes do slip by us. Please let us know if you come across an error so we can correct it. Buttons and beads are NOT suitable for children under three (3) years of age due to them being a choking hazard. Please replace buttons and beads with applique or embroidery. Backstitch Chain Stitch Running Stitch Blanket Stitch Cross Stitch Satin Stitch French Knot This design and its instructions, diagrams and templates are protected by copyright. They may not be reproduced by any process. If the project is being made by a group of crafters, each person is required to have purchased their own copy of the pattern. The instructions and information contained in this pattern is given in good faith, but no guarantee is given due to the fact we have no control over the techniques and materials used. SPRING MANDALA CUSHION What You Will Need 45cm (1/2 yard) of light charcoal linen-look fabric for the cushion 10cm (3in) of aqua-on-aqua print fabric for the trim Scraps of fabric, both solid and print, in light grey, white, orange, pink, green, yellow, and aqua for the applique Quantity of lightweight fusible webbing (1) 45cm (15 1/2in) square of lightweight fusible interfacing (optional) Contrasting stranded embroidery thread for the stitched detail Matching thread to suit your favourite applique stitching method (1) 35cm (14in) cushion insert Applique mat or Teflon sheet (highly recommended) General sewing supplies Cutting Instructions 1. From the charcoal linen fabric, cut: (1) 15 1/2in square for the front of the cushion, and (2) 11 1/2in x 15 1/2in rectangles for the back of the cushion. 2. From the aqua-on-aqua print fabric, cut: (2) strips 1 1/4in x WOF. Crosscut (4) 1 1/4in x 15 1/2in strips for the trim. How to Make the Cushion 1. Use a pencil to trace the required applique shapes onto the paper side of the fusible webbing leave approx. 1/2in between each shape. When you have finished tracing, roughly cut out the individual shapes 1/4in outside the traced lines. 2. Fuse the applique shapes to the wrong side of the fabrics you have chosen for the project following the manufacturer s instructions. Cut the shapes out carefully on the lines when cool to the touch. Remove the backing paper from the applique shapes as you go. 3. Trim the interfacing to measure 15 1/2in square, then fuse it to the wrong side of the 15 1/2in cushion front. Proceed as follows - Fuse the central flower medallion together using an applique mat or Teflon sheet. Let cool, then peel the shape away from the applique mat. Repeat to fuse the larger flower, petals, and the completed central medallion together. Diagram 1 4. Use the photograph and Diagram 2 as a guide to centre and fuse the large medallion to the cushion, then fuse the wedges in place. Diagram 2

5. Use an applique mat to fuse the (8) small tulip shapes together. Let cool, then peel the shapes away from the applique mat. Use the photograph and Diagram 3 as a guide to fuse the tulips to the cushion. Diagram 3 6. Stitch around the applique shapes using your favourite method. I stitched around my shapes using machine blanket stitch and matching thread. Stitch French Knots to the cushion front where indicated on the template using two strands of contrasting embroidery thread. Press (on the wrong side of the cushion), then set aside. 7. Turn under a 1/2in hem on both short ends of a 1 1/4in x 15 1/2in aqua strip. Fold the strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides facing and press well. Diagram 4 8. Sew a straight line of stitching 1/4in in from the folded edge using matching thread. Press, then trim along the raw edge to make a strip 1/2in wide. Repeat to make (4). Diagram 5 9. Centre an aqua strip, raw edge to raw edge, on one side of the cushion front. Pin, then baste in place. Repeat for all (4) sides. Press, then set aside. Diagram 6 10. Turn over a double 3/4in hem on one long edge of a 11 1/2in x 15 1/2in rectangle. Press, then topstitch the hem in place using matching thread. Repeat to make (2). 11. Place the appliquéd cushion front face up on your work surface. Lay one of the cushion backs, right side facing down, on top of the cushion front. The hemmed edge facing inwards. See Diagram 7 on the next page. 12. Place the remaining cushion back, right side facing down, on top. The hemmed edges will overlap in the middle this forms an envelope back.

13. Pin the (3) layers together, then sew around all four sides of the cushion using a short stitch length and generous 1/4in seam. Clip the corners, then turn right side out. Press gently. 14. Stuff the cushion cover with the 14in cushion insert to finish. You can add clips or buttons to the envelope back, if you prefer, at Step 10. Diagram 7 Small Centre Medallion How to Print Templates from PDF Patterns All of the templates are provided at their full size. Make sure that your printer is set to print at 100% with no scaling or cropping. Some templates may be divided into two or more sections and will need to be joined to make the complete template. Simply match the shapes along the dashed or dotted lines, then use adhesive tape to stick them together. Occasionally a shape will distort a teeny bit in the printing process, simply adjust where necessary.
