1. Cutting 1/4" (6 mm) seam allowance included in the quilt piecing measurements and 5/8" (1.5 cm) in the sewing measurements Wool tweed: 2-21" x 11" (53 x 28 cm) pillow back 4-22" x 4" (56 x 10 cm) pillow front border Dark lilac: 5-5" x 5" (13 x 13 cm) blocks Blue: 6-2" x 5" (5 x 13 cm) pieced blocks Medium lilac: 6-2" x 5" (5 x 13 cm) pieced blocks Appliqué Pieces: Trace the appliqué templates onto the paper side of the fusible webbing. Cut out the pieces roughly. 2. Embellishing Draw lines with a water soluble marker on the 6 medium lilac 2" x 5" (5 x 13 cm) pieces as illustrated. 2" (5 cm) 1 1/4" (3 cm) 3/8" (1 cm) Attach the Sewing Star Foot, thread your sewing machine with blue rayon embroidery thread on top and bobbin thread in the bottom. Place tear away stabilizer under the fabric and sew rows of your choice of stitches, we have used stitch and stitch. Remove the stabilizer and press. 3. Piecing Thread your sewing machine with sewing thread in the top and bottom. Select a straight stitch, stitch length 2.5. Attach the Clear ¼ inch Right Guide Foot with IDT. expression quilt cushion 4

Pin and stitch a blue strip with an embellished medium lilac strip. Let the guide ride along the fabric edge for a ¼" (6 mm) seam allowance. Sew another blue strip on the other side of the embellished medium lilac strip. Press seam allowance open. Continue to sew the other squares as illustrated. Pin and stitch a dark lilac square to the top of the embellished square. Sew another dark lilac square to the bottom of the embellished square. Press seam allowances open. For the second row sew a dark lilac square between two embellished squares. For the third row sew an embellished square between two dark lilac squares. Pin the rows together and sew them to create the pillow top. Match the seams carefully and press the seam allowances open. expression quilt cushion 5

4. Sewing borders with mitred corners Mark the center of the pillow top, bottom and both sides. Mark the center of each border strip. Pin the border strips to the sides, top and bottom of the pillow top with right sides together, matching the center markings. Sew the border strips to the pillow top stopping and starting ¼" (6 mm) from corners. Press seams toward the border strip. From the wrong side fold the pillow top in half diagonally. Match the side borders to the top or bottom borders at the border seams. Pin in place. Line a ruler up with the diagonal fold of the pillow top and draw a line from the border seam to the outside edge of the border. Sew from the beginning of the marked line, backstitch and continue to sew on line to the outer edge. Unfold to make sure the pillow top is lying flat if not, correct the stitching line. Trim the seam to ¼" (6 mm) and press open. expression quilt cushion 6

5. Appliqué Cut the appliqué pieces. Remove the cover paper from the fusible web on the appliqué pieces and press them on the pillow top as illustrated. Snap on the Open-Toe Appliqué Foot. Sew around all yellow pieces with an appliqué stitch. Press the stem and the E appliqué pieces in place and sew around them with a narrow satin stitch. 6. Quilting Place batting on the wrong side of the pillow front piece, snap on the Clear Stitch-in-Ditch Foot and stitch in the ditch between all the squares. Change to the Free-motion Foot and select a straight stitch and set up for free-motion quilting. Quilt all the dark lilac pieces as illustrated. expression quilt cushion 7

7. Sewing Place the batting on the wrong side of the two back side wool tweed pieces, finish all the outer edges with a narrow zigzag stitch or with a serger. Snap on the invisible zipper foot; sew the zipper between the long sides of the two back pieces, for information about sewing an invisible zipper see the Accessory Catalogue. Snap on the Seam Guide Foot, open the zipper and place the pillow back piece on top of the front piece right sides together. Pin in place. Sew around all 4 sides. Trim the corners and turn right side out through the zipper opening in the back. Insert the pillow form. expression quilt cushion 8
