Preparation: Remove all the hardware and slip them into little baggies for safe keeping until you need to put them back on. Seal and sand the brush carrier. Basecoat the inside surfaces of the carry-all, the brush blocks and the handle with Lilac. The inside edges of the surfaces are Purple Cow. When the handle is dry, use the ½ artist s tape to create the stripe. Apply it in a diagonal direction, starting at one end. Make sure the tape is pressed securely down on all edges so you don t have leaking when you apply the color. I find it easy to apply a layer of the background color on the tape edges to be sure, but in this case, it won t matter if you get a little leakage. Apply Purple Cow to the taped handle and when dry, remove the tape and apply a wiggly line of 1

Teal Green to both sides of the Purple Cow stripe. Apply Teal Green to the small dowels that hold the paint on the shelves and to the tops of the brush blocks. Apply Cool Neutral to the front, back, ends and bottoms of the pieces. When dry; apply a faux finish in the following manner: Lay a piece of Saran Wrap, (larger than the area to be fauxed) to the side and keep it flat. Make a mixture of Lt. Buttermilk + water (1:1) and quickly apply it to the dry Cool Neutral areas. Lay the piece of Saran Wrap on the wet mixture and scrunch with your fingers. Carefully lift the wrap, and you should have a sort of crushed velvet look. If it looks too watery, quickly wet the entire area with clean water, wipe it off add a little more paint to your mixture, and do it again. Trace the patterns onto tracing paper, then onto your pieces. Hint: Trace the shape of your wood piece(s) onto tracing paper, and then fit the pattern into the tracing. It makes life so much easier! Whew! Now all the prep is done, let s get down to the real fun stuff! Painting Instructions Brush Handles (Note: the following brush instructions apply only to the brushes on the front. Brush block brushes are following these.) Basecoat the handles with Lamp Black. Float shade them where they connect or something is laying over them, first with Grey Sky, then with Snow White. Refer to the photos for all of them. Brush Ferrules Base coat the ferrules with Grey Sky. Float shade outer edges with Neutral Grey. Line the ferrules with thinned Neutral Grey. Add a small highlight line of Snow White on the right side of the bottom one. Brush Bristles Base coat the bristles with Golden Straw. Float shade at the base of the bristles, first with Honey Brown. Then deepen with floated Burnt Sienna. Add individual bristle lines coming out of the ferrule area to the tip with thinned Burnt Umber. Line the outside of the bristle area with thinned Burnt Umber and when dry, add some little floated Snow White highlights in the tips of the brushes. Re-float under the ferrules with very soft Burnt Umber. Large Brush on Brush Blocks Basecoat the handle with Lamp Black, apply a drybrushed highlight on the right side, then thin Snow White and apply a thin sparkle. Add a dot of Snow White above it and to the right. Ferrules are the same as the small brushes. The bristles are shaded under 2

many ugly stages until you get finished. Layering is what makes them pretty. So don t give up, just keep on painting, one step at a time and you will love them when they are finished.) Use your # 4 liner to basecoat the leaves with Reindeer Moss Green. Shade at the base and down the center vein with floated Lt. Avocado. Highlight down the center vein, opposite the shading, with floated Snow White. Keep this very soft and do it twice. Shade at the base of the leaf and down the center vein, this time with floated Midnite Green. Apply floated tints of B. Sienna to the leaves at random. Apply a thin line of thinned Midnite Green to the center vein and outline the leaves with wavy broken lines of Midnite Green. Apply a very thin wash of Festive Green to each leaf. Be sure to keep it thin, and if you wish, you can add a second layer. Last, apply a thin line of Snow White to the highlighted area right next to the line of Midnite Green. Daisies (Note: The little ones are just a tad different than the big ones.) Basecoat all daisies with Snow White, using the size 10/0 Liner on the small ones and the size 4 Liner on the big ones. The big ones are done with strokes of Snow White, pulling three-four strokes in each petal. Apply tints of Dioxazine Purple and Bright Yellow to both small and large, using the appropriate sized Angular Shad- 3 the ferrule and down both sides with Honey Brown, then Burnt Sienna. Lining and bristle lines are done with thinned Burnt Sienna. You could turn the big brushes upside down and have them right side up! I originally did that, but decided I liked them better on their heads. Ribbon Basecoat the ribbon with Purple Cow. Shading is floated using the size 5/8 Angular Shader and Grape Juice. Apply this where something lays over the ribbon, and according to the picture. Highlighting is done according to the picture with floated Soft Heather also using the size 5/8 Angular Shader. Highlighting, as well as shading is always done best in two or more layers. When finished, line the ribbon with thinned Dioxazine Purple. Leaves (A little note about leaves: Leaves are probably the hardest thing to do because they go through so

ers. The centers are basecoated with Golden Straw, shaded at the bottom, top or side depending on each one, the largest open side, with floated Grape Juice. When dry, dots of Snow White are applied on and around the center with your stylus. The petals on the small daisies are outlined with thinned Dioxazine Purple, but the big ones are not. Berries Berries are basecoated with Teal Green. Shade one side with floated Midnite Green, using the size 3/8 Angular Shader. Highlight the opposite side with floated Whispering Turquoise. Add a dot of Snow White on the highlighted side for a further highlight. Add an elongated dot of Midnite Green to the top where the stem comes out. Finishing Vines: Thin Burnt Umber and use your size10/0 Script Liner for the vines. The berry branches are thinned Burnt Umber using the size 10/0 Script Liner. Dots: Add the dots on the letters using a brush handle. Strokes on the front corners: Use a size 10/0 Liner with a little water and Purple Cow. The dots are Purple Cow using your stylus. When everything is dry, apply your varnish using the 1 Finish brush. After all pieces are dry, attach the hardware to the pieces, and fill with your supplies for your next Painting Adventure. I hope you have enjoyed this project. I sure had fun designing it. Enjoy your painting journey!! Julie 4
