Introduction to Substation Design TADP 542 Distribution Substations- Drawings and Documentation Instructor: Richard Snell Transmission & Distribution Program
Drawings Drawings are prime method for communicating information about a substation project. Drawings for a new substation will usually be CAD drawings. Drawings should be created in accordance with substation owner s drafting standards.
Drawings Drawings for a substation project can range from a few to over a hundred depending on owner s preferences and size and type of substation project. More drawings will be included for a project that will be constructed by a contractor than for a project constructed by the substation owner s personnel.

PD Foundation Plan (PD- 1.01)
Structure Plan and Details There isn t a separate Structure Plan unless it is a very large substation. Structures are usually identified on other drawings such as Slide 33. Structure Detail drawings are used for fabrication and assembly. Structure Drawings for first substation are listed on Slide 4. Second substation are listed in PD-7.xx series on Slide 5.
Grounding Plan and Details Grounding Plan is usually shown on one drawing unless it is a very large station. Grounding Details may be shown on one or more drawings. Next two slides show a Grounding Plan drawing and a Grounding Details drawing.
Mead Grounding Plan (E-35481, Sheet 05)
Mead Grounding Details (E-35481, Sheet 06)
Raceway Plan and Details The two slides that follow are examples of a Conduit Plan drawing and a Conduit and Cable Schedule drawing. When many conduits occupy the same trench, they are usually installed in one or more layers with several conduits in each layer (duct bank configuration). Some owners use a Cable List to provide cable information.
PD Conduit Plan (PD-8.00)
PD Conduit and Cable Schedule (PD- 8.01)
Control Building Plan, Sections and Details A Control Building may have many drawings associated with it. These may include a Plan view, Section views and Detail drawings of some of the equipment located with the Control Building. Several utilities use a different name for this facility instead of building. This is to avoid difficulties with local government building departments when a prefabricated structure is utilized.

Relay, Control and Metering Panel Layouts and Wiring Diagrams The next two slides are examples of a Panel Layout drawing and a Panel Wiring diagram.

Mead Control and SCADA Panel (E-35481, Sheet 26)
AC and DC Schematics These can include three-line diagrams and AC and DC breaker panel drawings. CT and PT Schematic Diagrams may also be included.

Mead AC Station Service Wiring Diagram (E-35481, Sheet 33)
Mead DC Breaker Panel Wiring Diagram (E- 35481, Sheet 32)
Mead CT & PT Schematic Diagram (E- 35481, Sheet 34)
Material Lists Some owners place Material Lists on drawings. It is usually more difficult to update lists on drawings. A Control Building Material List may appear on the Control Building Plan drawing. Material Lists are often contained in either word processing documents or spreadsheet documents instead of on drawings.
Additional Drawings Additional drawings or groups of drawings may appear in a substation project. SCADA Equipment and Wiring Diagrams Major Equipment Physical and Electrical Oil Containment Property Fence Plan
SCADA Equipment and Wiring Drawings Most new substations have some form of a SCADA system. Many existing substations also have a SCADA system. Many different SCADA systems are employed and the drawings and wiring diagrams are very diverse. No example drawings will be shown here.
Major Equipment Physical and Electrical Drawings Manufacturer s drawing for transformers, circuit switchers and circuit breakers may be included in the drawing package. Some owners may keep the major equipment drawings separate from the substation drawings. The electrical drawings are usually needed for connecting power and control cables to the equipment.
Oil Containment Drawings One or more drawings may be created if extensive oil containment is required. It may be a part of another drawing if limited oil containment is required. See Slide 33 where it was combined with the transformer foundation.
Property Fence Plan Drawings A property perimeter fence may be required when the substation property extends some distance beyond the substation enclosure. This may require a separate drawing or it may be shown on the Site Plan drawing.
Additional Substation Drawing Information Refer to Appendix A of Chapter 3 of the RUS Design Guide for Rural Substations for further information regarding substation drawings.
Documentation In addition to the substation drawings, the following documents should be retained as part of the substation design record: Project Plan including revisions Project Schedule Project Cost Estimate Geotechnical Study
Documentation (cont.) Ground Resistivity Study Grounding Grid Design Structure and Foundation Design Bus Work Design Calculations Equipment Ampacity Determinations
Documentation (cont.) Insulation Coordination Design Construction Contract Change Orders Other Engineering Calculations as appropriate
