Task Force on Technology We Want You to Succeed Cast (in order of appearance) Narrator Dorothy, a new Trusted Servant Good Witch of Technology (GWOT), a Trusted Servant Skeerie Crow, a WSC Delegate Carla-Lee Lyon, an Area Chairperson Tim Woodman, an Area Group Records Coordinator Dorothy, a newly elected trusted servant, has found herself on the yellow brick road in route to Cyber City. Prior to her election, Dorothy was familiar only with basic e-mail and the telephone; however, that has all changed. She needs to know more. She meets The Good Witch of Technology who says, We here in the Land of Technology say, We want you to succeed. (approaching GWOT) Where am I? Who are you? What do you do? You are in the Land of Technology. I am The Good Witch of Technology, and like you, I am a Trusted Servant. In your new position, you may have to expand your technology skills. My job is to help those who are technologically-challenged. Why am I here? I know how to make a phone call and to use e-mail. You are here because we want you to succeed. Your journey to Cyber City will help you succeed in your role. The yellow brick road has technology stops, and you may meet some other Trusted Servants who are also struggling with technology issues. (skeptically) You ll help me succeed? Show me how! Let s follow the yellow brick road to Cyber City.
As Dorothy and The Good Witch of Technology make their way toward Cyber City, they meet Skeerie Crow, a frazzled World Service Conference Delegate, who is sitting in front of a computer with a blank screen. Hi, I am Dorothy. Who are you? What are you doing? Why are you so upset? Skeerie: I am Skeerie Crow. My Area purchased a laptop and projector. They want me to do my Conference report using PowerPoint. I have no idea how to begin. I just don't have a brain for technology. (looking at GWOT) Who are you? I m The Good Witch of Technology, and my job is to help you succeed. You do have a brain and we will help you learn how to use it. At this technology stop, help with PowerPoint is available for you. (The PowerPoint protocol appears on screen.) You have your information from Conference. Now look at the screen for help in creating a PowerPoint with your information. If you get stuck, there are Al-Anon members back in your Area who will be glad to give you further guidance. (Skeerie turns her attention to the procedures on the screen then turns back to her computer and starts to work on a PowerPoint.) Skeerie: (as she saves the title slide) Thank you. I do have a brain! I can succeed! Join us on our journey to Cyber City. Skeerie Crow joins The Good Witch of Technology and Dorothy as they continue their journey toward Cyber City, but get no further than the next technology stop where they encounter Carla-Lee Lyon. I m Dorothy. Who are you? What s wrong?
(whining) I m Carla-Lee Lyon, and I m trying to figure out what to do about the Area World Service Committee meeting that couldn t be held because of the tornado. We can t do it by e-mail, and it will take forever to call everyone individually. Everyone is going to be so angry at me because the Assembly is going to be a disaster without a planning meeting beforehand. Hi, Carla-Lee, I m The Good Witch of Technology. Have you ever thought about using a conference call to contact everyone? Oh, I just don't have the courage to try anything new that seems complex. You do have courage, and at this technology stop we'll show you how to place a conference call. (The Conference Call protocol appears on screen.) Look at the screen. (looking in amazement at the screen) Just by following this procedure, I can hold a meeting? Yes. We want you to succeed. (Carla-Lee follows the directions, and phones begin to ring around the room as the call is initiated.) Wow, I had the courage to try something new, and it worked! Now that your conference call is completed, join us as we journey to the Cyber City. (Carla-Lee, now all smiles, joins GWOT, Dorothy, and Skeerie as they continue their journey.) As our Trusted Servants continue their journey, they come upon Tim Woodman who has a group records printout in his hands. I m Dorothy. Who are you? What s all this? (pointing at the print out)
I m Tim Woodman. My Area Chair wants me to organize the Area group records. She says it will make it more efficient in communicating if the Area uses one set of data instead of having everyone create their own. I have a print out but I ll never be able to read it after all of the additions and corrections are made. Woe is me! It will be a horrible mess! I have lost heart at ever doing an adequate job. Maybe I should just resign. Don't lose heart! There is a way to organize your data, which can be read and updated easily. Who are you? Do you think I can do it? I'm not sure. I m The Good Witch of Technology, and I know you can do it! We want you to succeed! Look at the screen in this technology stop. (Gestures toward the screen with the Excel protocol.) If you work at this computer, you can follow the directions on the screen. (with disbelief in his voice) It s that easy? I am really enheartened! (He starts typing group records.) Yes. We want you to succeed. Come and join us on our journey to Cyber City. Skeerie and (in unison) Yes, come with us. (saving his work) Let me save this first. (After saving his work, he gets up and joins the others.)
Good luck to each of you. Cyber City is just ahead. Dorothy, Skeeri, Carla-Lee, and You aren t coming with us? Why? We need you! You are never alone; but I must stay on the yellow brick road to help other trusted servants. I am always here for you, but each of you has the checklists on e-communities and members in your Area who can help if you will ask them just as you received help here in the Land of Technology. But what if someone in my Area doesn t know Excel? You'll be surprised how many members in your Area have technical skills and are willing to share their expertise. Even if you can't find a member, Al-Anon isn t opposed to outside help. If we can t find help, can we call or e-mail you, Good Witch of Technology? You can if necessary. We want you to succeed. Remember the maxim, when the student is ready, the teacher will appear. There are teachers for each of you in your Area, and you won t need me as much. The journey continues with our trusted servants waving goodbye to The Good Witch of Technology and traveling toward Cyber City. The journey to Cyber City will take them past additional technology stops for Word, data storage, e- mail, LCD projection, and e-communities. Future technology stops on the yellow brick road may include Skype, blogs, social networking, internet phone, and other technologies as they develop. In the magical Land of Technology, the yellow brick road never truly ends as our Trusted Servants discover
